Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 5: “The End”

Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 5: “The End”

In the final episode of its debut season, Assembly heads to Brooklyn, NY – Prospect Park, specifically – as Iron and Wine and Calexico end their repose, their week, and their renewal with their preferred form of communication: a performance.

Background vocals courtesy of Mother Nature, of course.

There's still one final, outstanding mystery to resolve this season: "What brings people together?" Well, okay, two final mysteries: "Is anyone even from Brooklyn anymore?" Listeners beware, the best mysteries, like the best moments, never, ever end.

Even so, Assembly expects to chase theirs until the final song is sung. So, in this finale, we’ll also exchange some “this is not goodbye” goodbyes with the three musicians, learn what roads they'll travel next, and how they spiritually need to stay connected. Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 4: “The Record”

Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 4: “The Record”

In the fourth and penultimate chapter of this season’s Assembly, Iron and Wine and Calexico return to New York City -- for many, the closest planet to the Sun -- to make some necessary noise at SiriusXM and CBS Television. Hear how much sound, fury, and craftsmanship goes into creating the most beautiful silences, and how even the highest profiles of art are hardly paint-by-numbers nor operations. Such moments are more like a rousing game of Twister with both a stopwatch and a kick ass green room or two along the way. Donuts and Emmys sold separately. Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 3: “The Tiny Desk”

Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 3: “The Tiny Desk”

The third part of Assembly Season 1 finds us aboard the Mothership of all things sonic, aural, and community-minded. We arrive in Washington, D.C., where Iron and Wine and Calexico are set to play an NPR Tiny Desk Concert in support of their 2019 reunion record, Years to Burn..

Ours is a business trip, though, as we peek behind one of most exhilarating showcases of live music, thoughtfully curated for those who skip lunch to listen. (We’ll also grab a picture or two of that really cool wall the guys play in front of -- aka Instagram Heaven!)

This visit marks the third time Sam Beam's been invited to play the Little-Concert-That-Could – a feat that certainly entitles the songwriter to ride the express elevator to the NPR offices. As for Calexico’s Joey Burns and John Convertino? It’s never too late for your first time

Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 2: “The Imposter”

Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 2: “The Imposter”

In the second part of Assembly Season 1, Iron and Wine and Calexico attempt their first public performance together in 15 years. To add even more butterflies to the gut, the show takes place in Sam Beam’s adopted state of North Carolina -- and it’s sold out.

No pressure! No pressure at all!

Lots to do before then, though, as we assemble smack-dab in the eye of rehearsals. Listen closely amidst the myriad languages the guys will learn to speak fluently this season. These are conversations not only amongst artists, but between the clock whisperers, caretakers, and silent collaborators integral to getting this show on the road.

Oh, and it wouldn’t be a hometown gig without some school friends and family members dropping in -- some announced, others unbeknownst -- to wish Beam, Joey Burns, and John Convertino bon courage.

    Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 1: “The Re-Assembly”

    Season 1: Iron and Wine & Calexico | Part 1: “The Re-Assembly”

For the debut season of Assembly, series creator and host Robert Milazzo follows Iron and Wine and Calexico, three intrepid singer-songwriters guided by a hunch that you can return home -- even 15 years removed from the reins.

To prepare for a world tour in support of their Grammy-nominated reunion record, 2019's Years to Burn, Sam Beam, Joey Burns, and John Convertino decided to embark on a week of musical solitude.

Though all trips require baggage in some shape or form, these veterans planned on traveling light -- for they knew that certain pieces, as it is with all of us, no longer fit, while others remain tailor-made.

On Part 1 of Assembly, “The Re-Assembly”, hear the three artists unpack what they took, what they re-packed, and what they chose to leave behind as they began their curiously familiar trek amongst friends, family, and fellow travelers. As we follow their footsteps, we'll soon learn that nostalgia makes a better door than a window.

So, let’s knock. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

Awesome behind the scenes peek for all creatives

No matter if you are into music, this specific collab, visual art, or the art of business and people’s interactions… this is a wide ranging peek at some really creative folks doing their thing— all well told, by the personable host.
Interesting premise for a show, and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Excellent subject matter, but hard to listen to

I’m a massive fan of Sam and I love In The Reins so I was excited to get a look inside this most recent collaboration. My issue is simply that the narration is unbearably pretentious and self indulgent, and i feel that it takes the focus away from artists that should be the primary subject of the podcast. I’m open to listening to more podcasts in this format, but I think this style of delivery won’t be for everyone.

Great subject, poor sound mixing

I’m a huge fan of Iron & Wine and Calexico and love hearing about their re-assembly for the Years to Burn album. That being said, I almost couldn’t listen to this first episode as the background music seemed to be mixed at the same volume level as the interviewer and interviewees. I found it very distracting as well as hard to hear that anyone was saying. I really hope this can be fixed for future episodes.
