Pawn queens: Tales and treasures from women pawn shop owners

When you imagine a pawn shop, what do you think of? Maybe a gruff dude behind the counter, giving you as little money - and as much attitude - as possible. After all, it's a male-dominated industry, and t.v. shows like Pawn Stars reinforce the stereotype.

But in this episode of Audacious, join Chion as she gets to know the kindness, compassion and sense of humor of Sandy Meier. She runs Pawn Queen on the Berlin Turnpike in Wethersfield.

Then, meet Lauren Kaminsky, a third-generation pawnbroker who is playing a huge role in changing the vibe of the pawn industry.

    GUESTS:

Sandy Meier: Owner/operator of Pawn Queen on the Berlin Turnpike in Wethersfield, CT. She is joined by her friend, Cathy Risigo-Wikline from Wolcott
Lauren Kaminsky: President of EZ Pawn Corp, and founder of ByGOLDGIRL. She also runs the pawn shops at Beauty & Essex in various locations where visitors can shop before heading to the restaurant or lounge. In 2023, she launched a vintage-inspired jewelry collection

Best Radio Voice!

Before having her show, I would hear Chion Wolf do smaller roles on NPR. Every time I heard her voice, I wondered why she did not have her own show. Her voice is perfect for radio. Her show topics are unique and engaging. Every guest is heard to say “that is a great question”. Check the shows - it happens in every show! That is a true indication of how good she is. Keep up the quirky! So enjoyable.

Cringingly Respectful

I’ve met Chión only once, but feel I know her through her voice. Her interview questions make me cringe yet at the same time her queries are so respectful of each person she speaks with. Her voice has been described in many ways, but I think what makes her interviews cringingly respectful is her “honey smooth” voice. You can’t help but want to savor it. Thank you, Chión. I know your Mom thanks you, too.

Just amazing

Chion’s questions dig deep and show a genuine interest in understanding people’s lived experiences. I’ve learned so much about not just interesting people but also what it means to be truly empathetic.
