"The Look of Work has Changed" Melissa Magsaysay on Redefining Brand Storytelling and Inclusivity in 2024!

I am so excited to bring you a special episode with my friend, the dynamic Melissa Magsaysay - who's made waves at the Hollywood Reporter and the Los Angeles Times while bringing Filipino issues to the forefront.
In this chat, we're diving into how women's roles at work have been changing. It's not just about traditional jobs anymore; we're talking CEOs, entrepreneurs, you name it.
Melissa walks us through her incredible journey as a writer in the fashion industry. She's the force behind Duster, a clothing line that's about blending her Filipino roots with stylish, practical outfits for everyday wear. It's her answer to how fashion is shifting in these post-pandemic times. She is also head of content at @thirteenlune, a one-stop shop for your black and brown-owned brands.
During this conversation, we get real about what it means for brands to have a genuine story or mission today.
It's 2023, and things are complex, especially when it comes to brands speaking up on social and political issues. Melissa shares her thoughts and experiences on navigating this tricky terrain with elegance and depth.
    We ask the questions:
•Have we become too sensitive or "too woke"?
•Is it necessary for brands to weigh in on the latest news?
•Does every brand need a mission in 2023?
Melissa is a woman who is redefining what it means to be an entrepreneur.
And I couldn’t be more excited for her!
    XO

New Motherhood, Postpartum & Finding Her Rhythm with Amrit Sidhu

New Motherhood, Postpartum & Finding Her Rhythm with Amrit Sidhu

Today’s episode is a special collaboration between Unhinged Podcast and Been Better… hbu! Off the heels of our conversation in Unhinged podcast, we continue a captivating conversation with Amrit Sidhu, a podcast host, DJ, and new mother.
Growing up as a South Asian woman in a predominantly white environment in Australia, Amrit unveils the realities she faced and the unique perspective she brings to raising her child in a world still plagued by prejudice. Her experiences of promoting understanding speak to her character, which shines throughout our entire conversation.
In particular, Amrit's passion for helping others shows through her involvement with non-profit organizations such as Better Shelter and Beat The Streets. Operating in both New York and LA, these organizations offer vital resources and support to unhoused communities.

But that's not all— Amrit opens up about her personal journey through postpartum and candidly shares her experience with weaning off breastfeeding and how her hormones took a rollercoaster ride during that period.

And we cannot forget Amrit's deep connection to music. Not only does she create her own music, but she also curates music that speaks to the soul. She discusses why music holds such a special place in her heart and how it transcends cultural boundaries. For Amrit, music is the universal language that unites us all… so should we ask her to curate a Been Better hbu playlist?

If you haven't already, be sure to listen to part one of our conversation to delve even deeper into Amrit’s story - listen here!

As always, leave us 5 stars and a glowing review… and thanks for listening!

Self-made Success story: Charlotte McKinney on Ketamine Therapy & finding her lane

Self-made Success story: Charlotte McKinney on Ketamine Therapy & finding her lane

If you’ve scanned the cover of magazines GC, Galore, Jezebel, or took a scroll through Instagram, you would recognize Charlotte McKinney. Charlotte is a self-made success story, who joined me on this episode of Been Better… hbU? to truly unveil that she is more than what meets the eye. Before taking off in her modeling career, she was living in Miami, partying and “being stupid.”
A leap to put herself on Instagram landed her in campaigns for Guess and Carls Jr’s Super Bowl 2015 ad. When it came to the fork in the road to choose New York or California, she chose to trust herself and move to California. In California, she has continued her career in modeling, acting, and even dabbling in standup. She is the type of guest I love… someone who lives in the moment and for the joy of new experiences.
Charlotte shares how she feels Hollywood has changed - how the introduction of intimacy coordinators on set gives her hope for the next generation of actresses. She also shares her battle with interstitial cystitis, a chronic bladder health condition, and how she deals with the pain. Charlotte unpacks how ketamine therapy helped her unlearn patterns, open her brain, and bring new ideas to the surface. “It helped me be able to leave my house… you feel lighter.”
Charlotte champions the idea that we all have our issues - how no one lives the picture-perfect life you see online. Her mission is routed in inspiring her community, through her personal shares with IC and her work with the Best Buddies organization. Charlotte truly impressed me, you’re going to love her.
Please rate the show 5 stars, leave the show a review, and follow the show wherever you get your podcasts. I’ll be back every other week with a brand new episode.

Marta Pozzan ,

Thank you!

Thank you for having me on the pod and for letting me share my truth!!

Yikes

When I saw Charlotte McKinney was on and talking about ketamine, I couldn’t wait to hear about her experience. The host was WAY more interested in talking about herself. Constant interruptions, finishing sentences and inserting “yeah” “right” “ok” after almost every sentence of Charlotte’s. At one point Charlotte starts asking her questions because I think she realizes Katie is just waiting for her to finish so she can talk about herself. A recommendation might be if you want to talk about your own experience on a topic, just do a solo episode instead of pretending to interview and care what the other person has to say. The best interviewers listen more than they talk and create space for the other person. I encourage Katie to go back and listen to that episode as a learning opportunity of how not to interview people. I hope I can find other podcasts where Charlotte has space to share her full story so I can learn more from her.

The Podcast Understander ,

Don’t do this to yourself.

Summary: Talent void daughter of a venture capitalist/healthcare leech doesn’t know what to do with all her free time so she starts a “mental health” podcast because it takes minimal effort and requires zero expertise. She should know it’s embarrassing but due to her upbringing she’s never encountered the concept of self-awareness.
