So great. Many of us struggling with our poor mental health and substance abuse consider ourselves rather worthless. Finding our truth tells us that these self-defeating endeavors are outright lies. Hopefully we make this realization before it’s too late. Thank you. Only honest conversations like shared here at HEART OF THE MATTER bring to light the fact we can use our hardships to our advantage. Thank you. We can recover, we can change, we can grow to be better than our worst selves. Thank you for sharing such dynamic conversations of truth. Growing up as a junkie in Baltimore, I have been clean from drugs for 35 years, 6 months, and 25 days. I still count my days so to give me strength not to surrender, so not to go back, yet I am still at risk. This is my truth. I used to hide my troubled past, but now I consider my hardships the most inspiring aspects of my entire life, that I am still here in spite of myself, that I survived.

As a mom trying to understand my sons’ substance use disorder this is wonderful! I appreciate learning about the disease and how people survive and thrive! Praise to my Al-Anon meetings — We can help our alcoholics by stopping our enabling behaviors. 💖
