    Undermine Episode 1: The Origins

    Undermine Episode 1: The Origins

Hey, Beyond The Pond listeners! We're proud to bring you the first episode of our new Phish podcast, Undermine. Check out the first episode here and subscribe on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

How did a band with no major label from a small city in Northern Vermont become one of the biggest bands in music within a decade? What were the origins of Phish and what laid the foundation for their cultural timeline and organic growth?

In the first episode of Undermine, Phish lyricist Tom Marshall brings in the perspectives of fans and collaborators who saw their rise in Vermont and helped to create the scene that was critical as the band found their groove and structure in the early 80s.

Undermine is sponsored by Upslope Brewing Company.

Undermine is brought to you by Osiris Media. Executive Producers are Tom Marshall, RJ Bee, Brian Brinkman and Matt Dwyer. Produced and Edited by Brian Brinkman. Mixed and Mastered by Matt Dwyer. Co-hosted by David Goldstein, Jonathan Hart and Brad TenBrook. Production assistance and writing by Noah Eckstein. Production Assistance from Christina Collins and Dawn Jenkins. Original music by Amar Sastry. Show logo from Mark Dowd. Thank you to all of our interviewees. We’ll see you next week.

Episode 113: Viking Funeral (The Final BTP

Episode 113: Viking Funeral (The Final BTP

In Episode 113 we discuss the last four years of Beyond The Pond, chat about our favorite episodes, run through some top five lists, and say goodbye to this project that’s been very near and dear to our hearts for since its inception in late-2016/early-2017.

Thank you to everyone who listened, engaged, suggested albums, offered criticism, guested, and offered a top album’s list at the end of each year. We’ve been so lucky to host this show and see it grow far beyond what we would have ever imagined in the early months of 2017.

We’ll be back in early February as part of the Undermine Podcast. We’re bringing a lot of what makes BTP special to the show, while working with our close friends on a show that we hope will tell the most complete story of Phish there’s ever been.

Thank you all so much for being with us for this ride. We’re eternally grateful for you support & your time.

     — Brian & Dave

    Episode 111: The Went Gin

    Episode 111: The Went Gin

In Episode 111 we discuss the near perfect take on Bathtub Gin from Limestone, ME on August 17, 1997. A melodic and emotive hose jam, it’s a brilliant example of pure playing, musical connection, and Trey-led jamming that, while it doesn’t break new ground for the band, neither has to. The Went Gin is here to serve as a peak moment of connectivity and communal joy over where Phish was, some 10 months into their reinvention period.

Songs featured in this episode are:
    The Kinks: “This Time Tomorrow”
    Faith No More: “Midlife Crisis”
    Bob Dylan: “Not Dark Yet”
    The Verve: “Space & Time”

    — — —

In addition, we discuss two new 2020 records we highly recommend: Winston CW: “Good Guess” and David Nance: “Staunch Honey”

Always Enjoyable

I really enjoy this podcast. Laid back presenters, great (knowledgeable and appropriately opinionated) analysis of Phish and a really interesting blend of other music (old and new) that I usually haven’t heard. It expands my musical universe and I look forward to every episode.

Music Love

From the embroidered pillows of the jams of Phish, a legendary band that stitches and weaves their influences throughout them, this podcast unspools the threads of those jams and connects them to the rest of the musical universe.

unbreakable net ,

Is it that beyond though?

As a phish fan I do enjoy their takes on the quartet’s music, for the most part. When it comes to delving beyond the pond I feel
as though they are stuck on mostly Indy rock bands, alt country and hipster obscura I would love to hear more diversity in genres, like hip hop, reggae, bluegrass, electro, etc... “shoe-gaze” is to beyond the pond as “eno” is to sound opinions. I’ll still listen but usually turn it off after they are done talking about the phish. And it’s ok to talk about the ruby waves jam more in depth guys. You’re not beating a dead horse, we want to dissect this until the next big jam happens.
