Binary System Podcast #521 – Hugo Awards, Better Call Saul, and In Memoriam

This episode originally broadcast on September 3, 2026. The original podast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/09/binary-system-podcast-521-hugo-awards-better-call-saul-and-in-memoriam/ Yes yes, we know we said we’d have an episode of Welcome to Night Vale to recap this week, but in our defense we are BAD AT COUNTING, and we won’t be able to recap the new Night Vale episode until next week. At least we have a few other things to discuss. The good: Hugo Awards (with a brief mention of Ursula Vernon’s Fabulous Hat). The not so good, or at the very least the sad: we lost Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullen last week and we are not okay. Finally, we watched another episode of Season 3 of Better Call Saul, a show which keeps getting better and better and which we probably should have gotten around to watching a long time ago. (Brief spoilers for Breaking Bad, or at least how the story of Gus Fring wrapped up, and wasn’t that amazing?) This episode’s outro is a clip from 909 Problems by Grumplefunk. Check out all the Hugo Award Winners, Nominees, and the reviews! If you’re curious about that last outtake clip in this episode…*sigh*. Look, GarageBand, we talked about this. You promised not to cut off the end of my recordings anymore, and I heavily implied that I wouldn’t throw you into a Microsoft Windows 95 floppy disk and run you through an industrial paper shredder. Let’s try not to have this discussion again, okay? It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Binary System Podcast #520 – The final two episodes of Beastars

This episode originally broadcast on August 28, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/08/binary-system-podcast-520-the-final-two-episodes-of-beastars/ It’s finally here, the last two episodes of the very last season of Beastars and……okay, we’re not gonna lie, it’s not great. Spoiler warnings for everything, including the rest of this description, but what the absolute hell. Why reveal the (super shocking and out of nowhere) truth about the artificial meat if you’re not going to do anything with it? Why waste time with the MMA rabbit fighter or Riz when you could’ve shown the drama club play they’ve been working on all season? What the hell was up with the lizard tail and the bomb? Who won the Black Market Turf War? Why give us all these gorgeous animated sequences only to throw Melon’s Mom to the C-Team animators? And why give Juno a measly 15 seconds at the end of the series and ONLY SHOW THE BACK OF HER HEAD? We also have a tangent into Ted Lasso and Lore Olympus only because they’re guilty of the same Telling Instead Of Showing nonsense that could’ve been from time constraints but is probably because they were too chicken to write the difficult scenes. This episode’s outro is a clip from Phonk House Hybrid by Alex Morgan. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Check out Stand With Minnesota for links to fundraisers and other ways you can show your support. If we haven’t made it abundantly clear where we stand on this, F**K ICE. Binary System Podcast #519 – WTNV #292 “Collectibles (1999)” and Beastar

This episode originally broadcast on August 20, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/08/binary-system-podcast-519-wtnv-292-collectibles-1999-and-beastars/ It’s another flashback episode as Leonard Burton tries to distract us from the fact that Cecil is still missing. This week’s trip to the archives takes us to 1999, where a young Cecil is dipping his toes into the information superhighway and spending way too much on Beanie Babies from the brand-new online auction site: eBay. Ahhh, remember when eBay was new, and the experience of finding just that right bit of ephemera was still fresh, and upper executives of the company weren’t spending months terrorizing journalists for saying mean things about them? (Okay, that last bit has nothing to do with tonight’s episode, but dear Lord, have you read about that whole mess?) Anyway, this being Night Vale, the Beanie Babies are alive, the DJ’s are surprisingly nurturing, the secret police force is useless and not paying attention, and the local pastor is trying to stop young people from being, well, young. In other news, Legoshi in Beastars is still being impulsive and we say the phrase “Shi-Shi Gumi” a lot. We’re also catching up on Better Call Saul, and Jordan Peel’s film Nope is weird scary fun. This episode’s outro is a clip from Yet Another Analog Dance Track by TeknoAXE. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Check out Stand With Minnesota for links to fundraisers and other ways you can show your support. If we haven’t made it abundantly clear where we stand on this, F**K ICE. Binary System Podcast #518 – Beastars and Better Call Saul

This episode originally broadcast on August 13, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/08/binary-system-podcast-518-beastars-and-better-call-saul/ On this week’s recap of Beastars season 3 episode 21 (…yes 21, we doublechecked this time it really is 21…) we ask the important questions: will Louis end up with Juno, or pine away for Legoshi? What’s up with the MMA rabbit woman? Why do the A-Team animators always handle the bits with the rats? And what the ABSOLUTE HELL IS GOING ON WITH LEGOSHI’S GRANDMOTHER? Seriously, the bit with the venom and her “thoughtfulness” made NO sense, WHY are the women on this show so dumb? After that we have some random tangents into Murder Drones, Raised by Wolves, Kathryn’s thoughts on season four of Better Call Saul, and the fact that when Elizabeth said she’d finished season one of Better Call Saul she actually meant season two because SHE IS BAD AT COUNTING. This episode’s outro is a clip from Mixed Salad by Grumplefunk. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Check out Stand With Minnesota for links to fundraisers and other ways you can show your support. If we haven’t made it abundantly clear where we stand on this, F**K ICE. Binary System Podcast #517 - WTNV #291 "Mall Madness (1987)" and Beastars

This episode originally broadcast on August 6, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/08/binary-system-podcast-517-wtnv-291-mall-madness-1987-and-beastars/ Welcome To Night Vale is back from hiatus! To celebrate (and to cover for the fact that Cecil is missing) guest radio host Leonard Burton is sharing an episode from the archives! So send your Betamax back to the store, grab yourself an Orange Julius, and make sure you have your credit card handy for all those late-night 1-900 calls, because we're going back to August 1st 1987! It's the grand opening of the new Night Vale Mall, and while certain things haven't been finished yet (like "stores" or "ceilings" or "floors") we can still wander past the freestanding escalators and reminisce about some of the ways the 80's were just weird. (Our favorite things about the Hickory Farm store in the DeSoto Square Mall were the strawberry candies and the frozen yogurt, and we will not be taking questions at this time.) Then we recap episode 20 (yes we know we said 19, we are bad with numbers) of the final season of Beastars where Legoshi is having the worst luck, and then talk a little about Better Call Saul and last weekend's GenCon (sorry you had to deal with a tornado, folks. We're glad nobody died.) This episode's outro is a clip from Analogue Restart by TeknoAXE. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Check out Stand With Minnesota for links to fundraisers and other ways you can show your support. If we haven't made it abundantly clear where we stand on this, F**K ICE. Binary System Podcast #516 - GalaxyCon, San Diego Comic-Con, and Beastars

This episode originally broadcast on July 30, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/07/binary-system-podcast-516-galaxycon-san-diego-comic-con-and-beastars/ Last weekend Binary System went to ALL THE CONVENTIONS. Well, two of them. But they were big ones! This week we're recapping GalaxyCon in Raleigh and Comic-Con in San Diego, going over the good (Cosplay! Cute merch! Famous artists! Amazing Digital Circus meetup!!) the bad (ugh it was hot in San Diego) (oh like 79 degrees? - Kathryn) (Yes all right shut up - Elizabeth), and the ugly (on both the east coast and the west coast the LINES in ARTIST ALLEY ARE OUT OF CONTROL.) After that we recapped episode 19 of the final season of Beastars. In short, the A-team animators are still knocking it out of the park, Haru is being stupid, and Legoshi is a total chump. This episode's outro is a clip from Rigged Game by Grumplefunk. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Binary System Podcast #515 - Beastars, and Preview to The Odyssey and Comic-Con!

This episode originally broadcast on July 23, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/07/binary-system-podcast-515-beastars-and-preview-to-the-odyssey-and-comic-con/ This week's recap of Beastars features multiple instances of the word "weird". Look, we know this is a fantasy show, and it doesn't pay to look too closely into how a society of carnivores living side-by-side with potential food would actually work. But Bill the Tiger found a baby chick in his ramen, and him trying to raise it is like a high schooler trying to raise a baby that they found in their dinner, and it's actually a touching story that shows a new side of Bill's character, but we're sorry, that's weird. Also weird? HARU HAVING A DEATH WISH. That is all. San Diego Comic-Con and GalaxyCon Raleigh start this week, so both halves of the Binary System Podcast will be making an appearance! Oh, and The Odyssey is currently in theaters. It sounds like an amazing experience, and people with rage-filled criticisms about American accents and Christopher Nolan not casting the "right" people should probably settle down. This episode's outro is a clip from Indo Bop by TeknoAXE. Stick around after the outro song for two minutes of emergency sirens, otherwise known as Why We Don't Usually Record During Rush Hour. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Binary System Podcast #514 - Beastars, and RIP Sam Neill

This episode originally broadcast on July 16, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/07/binary-system-podcast-514-beastars-and-r-i-p-sam-neill/ Our plan tonight was to recap episode 17 of the final season of Beastars (you call THAT a "disguise", Louis? Really?? Also, we're really hoping Juno gets a happily ever after, but man alive it doesn't look good), and we do, but first we had to talk about the passing of Sam Neill. He was one of our favorite actors in some of our favorite films, but he was also by all accounts a genuinely nice guy. Thank you for all the amazing characters, Sam, you were the best, and we'll really miss the posts from your farm. And of course, we've got the usual random tangents, like stupidly long seasons of TV, Netflix Bloat, Florida Supercon, and how you really should be nice to the Comic-Con volunteers. This episode's outro is a clip from Juno by Chronox. Sam Neill was a favorite in our Watch Party conversations, here's a few: Hunt for the Wilderpeople The Hunt for Red October In the Mouth of Madness Jurassic Park It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help.
