  1. 4 DAYS AGO

Episode 511: Wolf Man, Back in Action, Movie News LIVE!

We've got some mediocre January movies and a lengthy news segment to keep you company on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Wolf Man," director Leigh Whannell's take on the classic creature feature. Christopher Abbott stars as a husband and father who takes his family back to his childhood home in the Oregon woods. Bad things happen. Julia Garner and Matilda Firth co-star. In theaters. Then, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx re-team for the generic comedy "Back in Action." Diaz (in her first movie in a decade) and Foxx play ex-spies in suburbia who get dragged back in the fray when their cover is blown. Their shocked kids must go along for the adventure, too. Ironic needle drops and bad special effects ensue. Streaming now on Netflix. Finally, it's a jam-packed Movie News LIVE! We talk about the state of the LA Wildfires, awards season, and how they'll affect each other in the weeks to come. Plus we try to untangle the whole Justin Baldoni/Blake Lively "It Ends With Us" fiasco, which has ended with them suing each other. And of course, we remember the singular David Lynch, who died this week at 78. Thanks for being with us during this busy, difficult time. And make sure to join us at our YouTube channel on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 8am Pacific for our Oscar Nominations livestream, which will be a fundraiser for wildfire relief efforts. 2. JAN 11

Episode 510: Better Man, Hard Truths, Movie News LIVE!

It's been a devastating week here in Southern California, with historic, deadly wildfires destroying thousands of homes. We've never seen anything like it. But we also wanted to show up for you, be consistent, and maybe provide some comfort for a little while. So if you're in need of that, we're here for you at Breakfast All Day. We have a couple of movie reviews , starting with "Better Man," an unconventional music biopic in which British pop superstar Robbie Williams appears as a chimp. Yes, you read that right. And it works surprisingly well. In theaters now. Then we discuss "Hard Truths," the latest from writer-director Mike Leigh. Marianne Jean-Baptiste gives a shattering performance as a middle-aged wife and mother who's miserable, and insists on making everyone around her miserable, as well. Jean-Baptiste has been and will continue to be in the awards conversation. In theaters now in limited release before opening wider on Jan. 17. Then we did our first Movie News LIVE! of the new year. We wanted to give folks a chance to sit and chat with us, and to let everyone know that we're OK. We talked about the fires, how they're affecting this city and the entertainment industry, and what the reverberations might be over the months and years to come. Please stay safe, and thanks for sharing a few moments with us during these unprecedented times. Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter for more: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

Episode 506: The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, Movie News LIVE!

It's Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday here at Breakfast All Day, as we review a couple of major awards contenders. First, we rave about "The Brutalist," which will end up on both of our year-end top-10 lists. Brady Corbet's epic is a stunning achivement (and a lengthy one at 3 1/2 hours, including an intermission). Adrien Brody stars as a visionary architect who travels to the United States after World War II, seeking artistic freedom and success. Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn and Alessandro Nivola co-star. See it in 70mm if you can. In theaters now. Then, we catch up with the formally daring "Nickel Boys." RaMell Ross' film, based on Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer prize-winning novel, tells the story of two young black men who become friends at a reform school in 1960s Florida. Our fellow critics adore this movie, but we found its first-person perspective distancing (and, for Christy at least, headache-inducing). In limited release now and expanding to more cities in upcoming weeks. Finally, we did our last Movie News LIVE! of 2024 on Friday. Lots to talk about including the teaser for James Gunn's "Superman," Oscar shortlists, "Mufasa" vs. "Sonic 3" at the box office this weekend and more. If you've been able to join us at all this year for our livestreams, thank you for taking some time out of the middle of your day, wherever you are in the world!  We'll squeeze in one more podcast episode for you early next week before Christmas and New Year's. 'Til then, thanks for joining us and hope you're enjoying the holiday season! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
