You know that moment when you meet someone from another country and realise everything you thought you knew about their home might be just completely wrong? Like when you discover that not every British person drinks tea at 5 o'clock, or that not every Italian likes pizza. So instead of trusting these doubtful stereotypes, we thought: why not actually ask people? In our studio, we gathered students from 6 different countries to discuss stereotypes about their cultures and find out how things really are. This podcast is a part of our LIF001 project at Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University.

    Rice to meet you: Welcome to China

    In this episode of Breaking Borders, Coco and Jason from China help us better understand cultural differences between northern and southern China, including food habits, personality traits, and much more. They explain how these ideas developed through history, climate, and culture. They also reflect on their own experiences of being misjudged based on their background. In the end, they show that regional stereotypes oversimplify reality and that individuals cannot be defined by where they come from.

    Between Freedom And Fries: Unpacking American Stereotypes

    This episode of Breaking Borders features two American students - Charis and Leanne - reflecting on common stereotypes about the United States. They also share their experiences living in China, highlighting how reality differs from Western media portrayals. At the same time, they come across their own stereotypes abroad.
