Ella and Stella - XJTLU

You know that moment when you meet someone from another country and realise everything you thought you knew about their home might be just completely wrong? Like when you discover that not every British person drinks tea at 5 o'clock, or that not every Italian likes pizza. So instead of trusting these doubtful stereotypes, we thought: why not actually ask people? In our studio, we gathered students from 6 different countries to discuss stereotypes about their cultures and find out how things really are. This podcast is a part of our LIF001 project at Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University.

    Rice to meet you: Welcome to China

    In this episode of Breaking Borders, Coco and Jason from China help us better understand cultural differences between northern and southern China, including food habits, personality traits, and much more. They explain how these ideas developed through history, climate, and culture. They also reflect on their own experiences of being misjudged based on their background. In the end, they show that regional stereotypes oversimplify reality and that individuals cannot be defined by where they come from.

They also share their experiences living in China, highlighting cultural differences and misunderstandings.     In this episode of Breaking Borders we are sitting down with Vincent from the UK and reflecting on common stereotypes about British culture, such as politeness, tea, queuing habits, and the idea of “bad food.” He explains the cultural and historical reasons behind these perceptions while also correcting common misconceptions. He also shares his experiences living in China, highlighting differences in safety, daily life, and social structures, as well as moments where he encountered stereotypes himself. In the end, the episode shows that British culture is far more diverse than often assumed, and that real understanding comes from personal experience rather than stereotypes.

She challenges myths like Transylvania’s vampire image and explains key misunderstandings about Romanian identity, including the confusion with Roma people. The episode also examines how stereotypes shape Romania’s reputation and contrasts them with everyday reality. Briana shares her experience studying in China, highlighting cultural differences and new perspectives. Ultimately, the episode shows that real understanding comes from personal stories, not stereotypes.

    Between Freedom And Fries: Unpacking American Stereotypes

    This episode of Breaking Borders features two American students - Charis and Leanne - reflecting on common stereotypes about the United States. We discuss ideas such as Americans being outspoken, friendly but distant, or reliant on fast food, and explain the social and cultural factors behind these perceptions. They also share their experiences living in China, highlighting how reality differs from Western media portrayals. At the same time, they come across their own stereotypes abroad. In the end, they show that there is no single “typical” American and that real understanding comes from personal experience, not stereotypes.
