Career Compass S2E4 When Work Becomes Toxic: Is Business Ownership the Exit Ramp?

Your Career Compass from The Entrepreneur’s Source® When Is It Time to Leave Your Corporate Comfort Zone? In this episode, host Tamara Loring talks with organizational psychologist Dr. Mike Smith about the idea of the “corporate comfort zone”—what it means, why it feels safe, and when that safety can actually be misleading. They discuss the difference between real security and a false sense of it, how discomfort can motivate you, and the four stages you go through when you leave what’s familiar: comfort, fear, learning, and opportunity. They have an open conversation about ageism, downsizing, and building wealth. They explain that looking into options like business ownership is not about giving up stability, but about taking control of your future. They finish by highlighting how a Career Ownership Coach® can help you find blind spots, clarify your goals, and explore your options in a safe and supportive way. In this episode: Why “familiar” and “secure” are not the same thing The difference between discomfort and fear—and how to use it The four zones: comfort, fear, learning, and opportunity Evaluating your career goals How a Career Ownership Coach® helps you see what you can’t see alone Take our Workplace Wellness Assessment  Featured guest: Dr. Mike Smith, organizational psychologist and executive coach, who guides leaders from the C-suite to the front line through purpose discovery and major career transitions—drawing on both academic research and his own move out of the corporate world. You often sense it before you can describe it. Maybe it’s the Sunday-night feeling in your stomach, or meetings that leave you tired instead of inspired. Maybe it’s a work culture that makes you dread the next email instead of looking forward to your tasks. A toxic workplace doesn’t show up all at once—it builds up slowly, one discouraging moment at a time, until your main goal is just to get through the week. If this sounds familiar, remember you are not weak, dramatic, or ungrateful. You are a professional whose workplace is no longer helping you grow. The question that comes up—“Is there a better way?”—deserves a real answer. That’s exactly the conversation Tamara Loring and Dr. Mike Smith have on this episode of Your Career Compass. As Tamara frames the stakes: “Are you actually dying a slow death? Are you subjecting yourself to a potential corporate expiration date?” — Tamara Loring At The Entrepreneur’s Source®, we have spent years helping people in your situation. You are the hero of your own story. We are here to guide you, help you see your options clearly, and support you in making decisions with intention, not out of fear. Will AI Take My Job? Future‑Proofing Your Career Path Career Compass Podcast S2 E3

In this episode, Tamara and Dr. Mike trade the scary headlines for a calmer, more useful question: what can you actually do about AI and your career? In this episode of the Career Compass Podcast, host Tamara Loring sits down with Dr. Mike Smith to take on the question quietly keeping millions of professionals awake at night: “Will AI take my job?” Their conversation moves past the doom-and-gloom and into something far more useful—what you can actually control. “Almost everyone we talk to has the same 2 a.m. question. It isn’t really, ‘What will AI do?’ It’s, ‘Will I still fit?’ That fear is real—and it’s also the starting line for taking back control.”  — Tamara Loring That is the heart of why The Entrepreneur’s Source® created this conversation. We talk with people like you every day who feel their role might shrink, who feel stuck in a job that no longer feels safe, or who simply don’t know where to begin. As Tamara reminds listeners, we are not the hero of your story. You are. Our job—and your coach’s job—is to be the guide. Why the Worry Is Real Early in the episode, Dr. Mike makes one thing clear: the anxiety isn’t irrational. The data backs it up. A 2025 Pew Research Center study of more than 5,000 employed U.S. adults found that 52% of workers feel worried about how AI may be used in the workplace, and 32% believe it will mean fewer job opportunities for them over the long run. Meanwhile, the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that 41% of employers worldwide—and 48% in the United States—plan to reduce their workforce by 2030 where AI can do the work. But Dr. Mike points to the number the headlines skip: that same report expects AI to create about 11 million new jobs even as it displaces about 9 million. “Fear is a terrible planning tool. Thinking you have no control is an illusion. You can’t control whether your company adopts AI—but you can absolutely control how informed you are and how you position your value.”  — Dr. Mike Smith The Part You Can Control: Your North Star Tamara steers the conversation toward the question she says changes everything—not “What job should I chase next?” but “What life am I actually trying to build?” “Before you chase the next job, get clear on your North Star—your goals for income, lifestyle, wealth, and equity. When you know the life you want, every career decision suddenly gets easier.”  — Tamara Loring With that North Star defined, the hosts say, you can finally ask sharper questions: Does my current job move me toward this, or just keep me busy? If AI changed my role tomorrow, would I still want it? Is there a better vehicle to get me where I want to go? Three Kinds of People in the Age of AI One of the episode’s biggest moments is Dr. Mike’s framework for how people respond to disruption. He describes three groups forming as AI matures: The Empowered—they take ownership, learn the tools, and choose paths that fit their goals. The Displaced—they rely only on tasks a machine can copy, and are caught off guard when those tasks disappear. The Dependent—they wait for an employer or system to rescue them.“AI won’t replace humans. But humans using AI will replace humans who don’t. The empowered don’t run from this wave—they learn to surf it.”  — Dr. Mike Smith How a Career Ownership Coach® Makes the Difference So how do you join that empowered group? Tamara and Dr. Mike agree the fastest path is not going it alone. A Career Ownership Coach® is a trained, neutral guide who helps you get clear on your goals, understand your real AI risk, explore options you may never have considered—including Career Ownership through proven, supported models—and challenge the beliefs that keep you stuck. “You are the hero of your story. A Career Ownership Coach® is simply the guide who helps you read the map—asking better questions so the answers you reach are truly your own.”  — Tamara Loring Through Career Ownership Coaching™, many clients say the same thing: “I didn’t even know these paths existed.” The options were always there—no one had ever connected them to their goals. Why “Just Keeping Your Job” May Not Be Enough Tamara raises the hidden cost of standing still. Gallup reports U.S. employee engagement fell to about 31% in 2024, the lowest in a decade—and roughly half of U.S. workers are “not engaged,” doing the bare minimum and watching the clock. Staying put without a plan, the hosts note, isn’t safety. It’s just familiar. Freedom Requires Responsibility As the episode closes, Dr. Mike returns to a theme that runs through all of his coaching. “If you value freedom, you have to accept responsibility for it. Most people wait until a crisis forces their hand. But if you think the price of success is expensive, just wait for the cost of regret.”  — Dr. Mike Smith You don’t have to wait for a layoff or a burnout moment to begin. You can treat right now as a research project on your own future—and explore your options with a Career Ownership Coach® at no cost and no obligation. “You don’t need all the answers today. You just need the courage to ask the right questions—with someone in your corner. Let’s explore what’s possible when you take ownership.”  — Tamara Loring Take our AI Threats Assessment and learn what impact AI will have on your Career  00:00:00 Intro & Music 00:00:08 Opening Hook — Change Before You Have To 00:00:31 Welcome to Career Compass | Episode Overview 00:01:28 Recap of Episodes 1 & 2 | Today's Topic: Will AI Take My Job? 00:03:38 The Three Fears People Have About AI at Work 00:05:02 What the Data Says — Gallup Stats on AI Job Anxiety 00:05:30 Doc's Take: Research Your Own Role & Industry 00:06:22 The Danger of Social Media Overload on AI Fear 00:06:45 Why a Neutral Coach Changes Everything 00:07:12 AI Won't Replace You — But Someone Using AI Will 00:09:09 Three Types of People AI Will Create 00:10:34 Historical Perspective: Technology Has Always Disrupted Work 00:11:57 "Change Before You Need To" — Doc's Core Message 00:13:31 Rethinking Your Career Identity in an AI World 00:17:10 Start With the End in Mind — Income, Lifestyle & Wealth Goals 00:18:47 It's a Proven System — and It Costs You Nothing But Time 00:19:20 Making an Educated Choice vs. Going Through the Motions 00:21:17 Reflection Prompts — Questions to Ask Yourself 00:21:54 The Power of a Coach to Challenge Your Thinking 00:23:34 Take the AI Threats Assessment — careercompassshow.com 00:24:27 Freedom Requires Responsibility — Final Thoughts 00:25:36 Preview of Episode 4 — Toxic Workplaces & Breaking Free

Season 2 Episode 2: Too Old to Hire, Too Young to Retire: Beating Ageism and Taking Ownership of Your Career.

Too Old to Hire, Too Young to Retire: Beating Ageism and Taking Ownership of Your Career Career Compass Podcast | Season 2, Episode 2 Experienced professionals in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are feeling squeezed — too young to retire, but increasingly pushed out by ageism, AI, and corporate restructuring. In this episode, host Tamara Loring sits down with Dr. Mike Smith — leadership coach, speaker, and 26-year U.S. Air Force veteran — to explore how age bias shows up in today's workplace and what to do about it. The problem is widespread. According to the TES Generational Career Confidence Survey, 49% of employees say ageism keeps them stuck in unsatisfying jobs out of fear they won't be hired elsewhere. Dr. Smith calls this "job hogging" — clinging to roles you've outgrown because the alternative feels too risky. Tamara adds another layer: "battered career syndrome," where professionals endure unfulfilling situations simply because at least they still have a job. Over time, people begin to confuse their identity with their job title. When that title disappears, limiting beliefs take over: I'm too old to start over. I don't have what it takes. These beliefs keep people locked in place long after their skills and values have evolved. But Dr. Smith reframes the entire narrative. Experience isn't a liability — it's a badge of honor. Judgment, resilience, and leadership can't be taught in a classroom. They're built through decades of real-world living. The opportunity is to stop apologizing for your experience and start leveraging it. That shift is increasingly leading professionals toward business ownership. The same survey found that 83% believe it's a more viable path than a traditional career, 66% see it as more secure than a job, and 79% believe it would allow them to fully leverage their experience — the very thing the job market often penalizes them for. Dr. Smith's core message: don't wait for disruption to force your hand. "We can either change before we need to or because we have to. And the choice is ours." Acting proactively preserves your options, income, and confidence. Waiting for a layoff only magnifies risk. And you don't have to figure it out alone. A Career Ownership Coach helps you clarify what you truly want — in income, lifestyle, and long-term wealth — and explore the right path to get there. As Tamara notes, 95% of clients end up pursuing something completely different from what they first imagined. Your best chapter may still be ahead. But only if you start writing it now. Season 2, Episode 01: Are Careers Broken? What the New Data Reveals:

The Entrepreneur's Source® | Career Compass Podcast | Season 2, EP 1 Career Compass Season 2, Episode 1: Are Our Careers Broken? What the New Data Reveals Season two of Career Compass opens with a bold question: Are our careers broken? Hosts Tamara Loring ("T") and Dr. Mike Smith return with hard data, fresh insights, and the honest, compassionate energy that made Season One resonate with audiences nationwide. Read more: https://vxrworks.click/CCpodcast Take the Career Confidence Assessment: https://vxrworks.click/Careerthreats Meet the Hosts Dr. Mike Smith spent 26 years in the Air Force, including serving as First Sergeant for the Air Force Thunderbirds. After retiring, he became a senior leader at a Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company and earned his PhD in organizational psychology — before walking away to pursue entrepreneurship. He calls it the best decision he's ever made. Tamara Loring has spent 24+ years helping people reimagine and reclaim the life of their dreams through career transition coaching with The Entrepreneur Source. Her own journey — guided by a coach who challenged her assumptions rather than directing her choices — is the personal foundation for everything she brings to this show. What the Data Says The TES Generational Career Confidence Survey for the Career Compass podcast revealed a striking contradiction at the heart of how Americans think about work and Career Ownership. The results reveal three major career threat zones: ageism, AI and automation anxiety, and toxic work environments. But the most striking finding is a glaring contradiction. While 83% of Americans believe business ownership is a viable alternative to traditional employment, and majorities say it offers more stability, security, and control, 66% of employees still say they'd prefer a traditional job. Dr. Mike explains it from a psychological perspective: we've been conditioned since childhood to equate a steady paycheck with safety. Even as layoffs, reorgs, and AI disruption make corporate careers increasingly unstable, most people default to what they know. It's not logic — it's programming. Job Hugging and the Coaching Solution Post-COVID volatility has created what Tamara calls "job hugging" — clinging to unfulfilling positions out of fear rather than fulfillment. The antidote, both hosts agree, is awareness and coaching. A great coach doesn't tell you what to do. They challenge your assumptions, sharpen your thinking, and help you rediscover the unique skills and superpowers that routine work can cause you to forget. Dr. Mike's defining insight for this episode: we can either change before we need to, or change because we have to. Proactive exploration driven by curiosity — not crisis — leads to far better outcomes. Your Career 2.0 Launchpad Episode 107 with Jim Doliber and Brian Stranko

In this episode, wildlife conservationist Brian Stranko explains how he shifted careers paths while still trying to help the environment. Career coach Jim Doliber describes the process and helping guide Brian along. From the article https://jdoliber.esourcecoach.com/wildlife-conservationist-pursues-wild-new-opportunity/ on The Entrepreneur's Source Blog https://entrepreneurssource.com/podca... From the article: Career ownership coaching from The Entrepreneur’s Source® gave Brian Stranko the tools he needs to achieve financial freedom and pursue his passion for preserving wildlife in Africa. Stranko dedicated his career to helping the planet as a conservation leader. Most recently, he served as a strategy and fundraising consultant for nonprofits in Africa as they struggled to secure funding during the pandemic. He also spent 11 years working for The Nature Conservancy as the director of the nonprofit’s water program in California. Inspired by the decline in wildlife tourism during the pandemic, Stranko started a new nonprofit in July 2021 to fuel conservation efforts. Rather than rely on tourism funding, Afri-Vet hosts online veterinary and wildlife care education programs created by African wildlife sanctuary staff. The videos are designed to help grow sanctuary resources and provide scholarships for limited-income Africans. Afri-Vet’s mission is to raise awareness for wildlife veterinary medicine and care to promote conservation. Having spent his career in the nonprofit industry, Stranko knew he needed to secure a steady income stream to be able to achieve his goals and support his family. Jim Doliber, a Career Ownership Coach™ for The Entrepreneur’s Source®, helped Stranko discover a new path to achieve the American dream. “I wanted to be able to have some sort of Plan B,” Stranko said. “Jim [Doliber] totally understood my need to maintain my work with my nonprofit and find a business that fit.” Doliber began his coaching career with TES in 2019 after spending more than 25 years working corporate jobs in product and real estate management and franchising. His past experience in franchising helped him recognize the importance of helping entrepreneurs discover a Career 2.0® that achieves their goals. TES coaches help people open their minds to new possibilities. The nation’s leading career coaching franchise uses an education-based program to help people identify their Income, Lifestyle, Wealth and Equity™ goals to achieve financial freedom and self-sufficiency. “I’ve had to know myself before, but it has been a while. It was nice to revisit it and understand how I operate, determine my interests, and my likes and dislikes,” Stranko said. In addition to achieving financial freedom, Stranko envisioned a future where he could continue his role as Afri-Vet’s executive director. He also needed his new career path to offer flexibility and further his conservation vision. In addition to his career as a conservationist, Stranko has three daughters who keep him on his toes. To stay grounded, his family likes to spend time together traveling. While current events forced them to put travel plans on hold, the family fondly remembers their last vacation where they relaxed and watched the wildlife at an eco-lodge in Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Your Career 2.0 Launchpad Episode 106 with Brian McNamara and Sophia Gibbs

In this episode, Sophia Gibbs describes how she shifted her career focus to involve her family while outlining the process with career coach Brian McNamara. From the article https://entrepreneurssource.com/blog/... on The Entrepreneur's Source Blog https://entrepreneurssource.com/podca... Mother-Daughter Dynamic Duo Happy Mother’s Day! In honor of all of the invaluable women who provide nurturing, guidance, and love, The Entrepreneur’s Source® is highlighting a mother-daughter team who are following a new path and pursuing business ownership together. After spending more than 15 years working in healthcare, Sophia Gibbs was ready for a change. As associate director of clinical operations at Weill Cornell Medicine, Gibbs garnered a wealth of management experience, including recruitment, finance operations, and communications. Despite achieving a successful career in Manhattan, Gibbs had a desire to get back to the basics of customer service. “I enjoy my job, but it does not focus on day-to-day care. It’s more administrative. I wanted to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” Gibbs said. With three children beginning to enter the workforce, Gibbs’ primary focus was on helping them achieve a successful future. She had her sights set on business ownership to provide a legacy for her children. “I wanted to have a business I could pass down to my kids,” she added. “Business ownership is the best thing I can give them. It serves as a trust fund for down the road.” Gibbs worked with Brian McNamara, a Career Ownership Coach™ for TES, to help achieve her entrepreneurial goals. TES coaches use education-based tools to help people set goals and explore possibilities at no cost. Coaches focus on helping people determine their Income, Lifestyle, Wealth, and Equity™ goals to chart a new course. TES coaches hold people accountable to their dreams and help them attain financial freedom. “Brian gets to know you as a whole person. He is very available and very resourceful. He made us feel as if we had a partner during this journey,” Gibbs added. Career coaching helped Gibbs decide that business ownership through franchising offered a low-risk, high-reward path to achieve success for her family. Franchising allowed them to operate a proven brand with the training and support needed to succeed. “Sophia is extremely kind, caring, calm, cool, and collected. Through that, she’s achieved great success in life,” McNamara said. “We started working together last September, and by the end of the year, she’d decided on not one but two businesses.” Having an aging parent exposed Gibbs to the gaps in the home healthcare system. Confident a better alternative existed, Gibbs signed a franchise deal to open a ComForCare location in nearby Jersey City, New Jersey, and immediately gave the leadership reins to her 26-year-old daughter, Sierra Graham. ComForCare offers an in-home care solution for the elderly. Read More...

More in This Episode 10: “Overcoming Obstacles to a Successful Mindset” What Don’t You Want? Often it’s easier to know what you don’t want than what you do want. A good way to begin the search for your Primary Aim is to become very clear about all the things you know you don’t want. Make a list. Don’t stop writing until you’ve written down everything you can think of. There is a basic premise at work here, which says that focusing on what you don’t want creates more of the same. The things you know you don’t want are probably things you think about frequently. You probably play them over and over again in your mind. The result is that you are mentally “rehearsing” them, practicing them, reinforcing them. What Do You Want? When do you feel most free? What is it that makes you feel most in touch with yourself? What gives you the greatest sense of fulfillment? Everyone has peak experiences. What are they for you? What do you want your life to stand for? What’s really important to you? This is what your Primary Aim is all about. Again, you start by making a list. Think about what you appreciate, what is important to you, the parts of your life you treasure, the ones that give you your deepest sense of satisfaction? If your list fills up with material things, dig deeper. Your Primary Aim isn’t about “stuff.” It’s about being alive. Tamara Loring: "It could be a mindset issue that's preventing you from achieving your "ILLWE" income, lifestyle, wealth and equity goals need to expect these expectations. Sometimes we don't even understand the poor habits that have snuck into our lives. But we're kind of frustrated, why aren't we moving forward. It would behoove us to actually look at what we're doing on a daily basis that's preventing us from living this dream life that we've created for ourselves. Or maybe it's just purely the lack of education and awareness about what is possible. I mean, you and I've spoken about it so many times, right?  More... https://entrepreneurssource.com/podcast/possibilities-options-dreams-ep-10-overcoming-obstacles-to-a-successful-mindset/
