Finding Connection and Purpose Through Sourdough, Service, and Spiritual Promptings

This week, I'm joined by Ganel-Lyn Condie: author, speaker, and, as you'll hear, self-proclaimed sourdough novice turned minister. We dive into the unique ministry she's developed through sharing homemade sourdough bread, and how something as simple as a loaf can be a conduit for connection, kindness, and even healing. Have you ever tried to turn a hobby or struggle into a way to bless others? Ganel-Lyn shares candidly about her own failures, triumphs, and the people who showed up just when she needed a "Sue" herself. But the real magic of this conversation is about more than bread. We talk about the quiet seasons of life—those stretches when our roles, routines, and identities seem to shift beneath our feet. What does it look like to listen for promptings, act on them (especially when they're unexpected or uncomfortable), and trust God with the outcomes? Whether your thing is chocolate cake, sourdough, or just lending a listening ear, Ganel-Lyn reminds us that small offerings and moments of ministering have big ripple effects. So as you listen, think about what you might have to offer—however ordinary or unfinished it feels right now. Who do you know that needs a little "sourdough ministry"? Who needs a text, a cake, or just a listening friend? Let's make space for the quiet miracles that show up when we dare to reach out. Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. Simple Ways to See the Hand of God in Daily Life

This week, I’m sharing some thoughts fresh from a talk I gave in sacrament meeting—and giving you a peek behind the curtain about what was on my mind as I wrote it. Ever wonder how we actually “find the Savior in everyday life”? It’s a question I was assigned to wrestle with, and it got me thinking: do we stumble into moments where we feel Christ’s presence, or do we have to search for Him intentionally? Together, we’ll explore not just the unexpected ways we might notice the divine, but how choosing to look shapes what we find. I’ll walk you through a quirky (and maybe slightly ridiculous) experiment—what do unicorns, purple trucks, and hidden hearts have to do with recognizing God? More than you’d expect! Join me as I share a three-step invitation for making these small moments matter: remembering God loves us, practicing gratitude, and looking outward for someone else who needs to be noticed. This episode is a simple pause to let you connect, reflect, and maybe even see the everyday with new eyes. As you listen, I hope you’ll find your own sweet nuggets of goodness, and maybe even an unexpected heart or two along the way. Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. The Spirit of Contention: Understanding Gospel Perspectives on Disagreement

This week, I’m not alone in the Chocolate Cake Bytes studio—Verlin from the Cultural Hall podcast joins me for a conversation that’s more lively (and maybe less wisecracking) than going solo. We take on a topic that gets thrown around a lot in church settings: is there really a difference between conflict and contention? And are we “of the devil” every time we disagree? Verlin and I go deep into what the scriptures actually say—and what they don’t—about the spirit of contention and how sometimes, avoiding conflict isn’t as virtuous as we might think. Along the way, we laugh about sibling boxing matches, rebellious chili spice levels, and the perils of answering, “Does this make me look fat?” But the heart of the episode is a practical, gospel-centered look at how facing disagreements with honesty and kindness can help us grow—and how curating our lives and even our social media feeds toward goodness can help us avoid contention, not conflict. If you’ve ever found yourself tiptoeing around hard conversations, or you’re wondering how to handle “porcupines” in your life, this episode is for you. Let’s learn how to resolve differences while keeping the sweet spirit the gospel offers. Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. Rethinking Repentance and Forgiveness During Holy Week

Easter is just around the corner, and this week I'm getting thoughtful about how we experience and understand Holy Week. Why are so many of us in the Church increasingly focused on Easter as a season, not just a one-day celebration? I share some personal reflections on what Easter means to me, and why this time of year draws my heart back to the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the gift of forgiveness. But here’s the twist: Have we misunderstood how repentance and forgiveness work? I unpack the common belief that repentance is the "price" we pay for forgiveness—and why I think that’s totally missing the point. Inspired by insights from teaching BYU-Idaho Pathways students and reading Elder Andersen’s The Divine Gift of Forgiveness, I explore the idea that forgiveness isn’t something we earn. Instead, repentance becomes the way we turn our hearts toward God, not just a checklist to wipe the slate clean. As you head into Holy Week, I invite you to rethink what it means to atone and be forgiven. It’s not about groveling or hoop-jumping—it’s about daily change, sincere turning, and becoming someone who loves the Savior more deeply. Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. How Imperfect Moments Reveal God’s Deep Love for Us

This week, I'm diving into something a little more personal as I sift through old memories and rediscover moments that shaped my journey. Ever wonder about the artifacts and stories you leave behind? As I archive photos, report cards, and even my Eagle Scout project, I'm reflecting on how these pieces become threads in the tapestry of legacy—one that's bigger than ourselves and might someday inspire our kids and grandkids. But the sweetest nugget comes from an unexpected lesson learned at Philmont back in 2015. Called to be the "priesthood accompanist," I quickly realized that my piano skills were about as raw as they come—imagine poking through hymns on a keyboard, surrounded by leaders and feeling the pressure mount! Yet amid the stress, something beautiful unfolded: a tender mercy and a reminder that our Heavenly Parents know us intimately, anticipate our needs, and offer love even in our most awkward moments. This episode isn't just a trip down memory lane—it's an invitation. If you've never asked God how He feels about you, take a few minutes this week and try it. I believe He wants you to know. And before your day ends, consider: who around you needs a little chocolate cake, or maybe just a reminder that they're deeply loved? Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. Is Life a Test or a Journey of Becoming?

This week, I’m joined by Sarah as we dive deep into the idea of “life as a test.” Why does this phrase feel so heavy, and is there a better way to view our existence? We wrestle with gospel culture, expectations, and the pressure to get everything “right”—from church checklists to phrases like “multiply and replenish the earth.” Is test really the wrong word for what we’re doing here, and how much does accountability play in our growth? But the real heart of our conversation is about purpose, influence, and agency. Is our purpose a single, narrow goal—or does it change and expand throughout our lives? Sarah and I explore how the sweet nuggets of gospel living emerge not from passing tests, but from personal development, becoming, and enriching others’ lives. Whether it’s through talents, kindness, or simply “being,” we look for new language and perspectives that bring hope instead of pressure. Come along for this honest exchange, and let’s rethink what fulfillment and growth mean in our journey of faith. If you’ve ever struggled with feeling “enough” or wondered if your impact mattered, this episode is for you. Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. Making Decisions When There’s No Perfect Answer: Lessons from Pioneers and Everyday Life

This week, I'm digging into the tricky world of decision-making, and I want to know—how do you decide if you’ve made the “right” choice? Whether you’re choosing where to live, what glasses to buy, or reflecting on the monumental choices faced by the Mormon pioneers crossing the plains, these moments shape our lives in profound ways. Join me as I wrestle with how we balance faith, stewardship, and personal revelation when the future is always unpredictable. In this episode, we talk about the power (and the trap!) of second-guessing ourselves and explore why you actually can’t ever know for sure what “might have been.” From personal stories about careers and optometrist visits, to powerful gospel examples like Adam and Eve, I’ll share why I believe that the best way forward is to simply decide your decision was the right one—and then learn all you can from it. If you’ve ever wondered if you took the right fork in the road, I invite you to listen in and see why sometimes, it’s not about choosing perfectly—it’s about moving forward with purpose, embracing your choices, and trusting that sweet gospel goodness is always ahead. If there’s a chocolate cake question (or decision!) you want discussed, send it my way. Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it.
