TBG U Girl Chat: Let's Talk Homecoming

Get ready, because class is almost in session. Welcome to the TBG University podcast, tailored for the 20-something who’s packing for a new year on campus, thinking through their gap year, enrolling in a community college, grabbing their stoles for graduation, and everything in between.  The most exciting time of an undergraduate’s school year is almost here ya’ll, and no, we're not talking about Halloween or the end of midterms. It’s almost Homecoming Season! — a time for tailgates, parties, special performances, yard shows, and of course for post-grads, the chance to reconnect with all of your besties from undergrad. When it comes to Homecoming, there’s soooo much to talk about — whether it be the dos and don’ts of networking with alumni, the importance of staying safe when hopping from after party to after party, and even how to afford all of the events that are occurring.  AFFIRMATIONS Homecoming is meant to be fun! I can use this time to do things that uplift me without worrying about outside stressors. I embrace this opportunity to engage in activities that bring my joy and interact with people who nourish my spirit.  I have the agency to tailor my homecoming experience according to my personal desires,  even if that means skipping the events my friends are going to. Session 382: What We Know About Alzheimer's

The idea of getting older and slowly losing memory of everything and everyone around us is something that can cause lots of dread and anxiety. Beyond the sensationalized depictions in shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, let's explore the real impacts of Alzheimer’s disease and how it can affect our families and loved ones. Joining me for this important conversation is cognitive neuropsychologist and Associate Director of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Dr. Lisa L. Barnes. Dr. Barnes has published over 300 manuscripts, received many NIH grants, and is the Principal Investigator of two longitudinal community-based studies of older African Americans. During our conversation, we discussed the common symptoms and presentations of Alzheimer’s, the link between Alzheimer’s and traumatic stress, and the importance of including Black folks in clinical trials when studying various medical interventions for Alzheimer’s. Session 381: The Mental Health Benefits of Running

They say life is a marathon, not a sprint, so today on the podcast, we’re going the extra mile by bringing you an episode all about running and how it can help you build endurance – physically and mentally. So, if you’re ready to go the distance and find your stride, lace up and get ready to hear from today’s trailblazing guest, Dr. Nina Joy Mena. Dr. Mena, known as Dr. NJoy, is an Atlanta-based community psychiatrist, author, podcaster, and motivational speaker who is passionately dedicated to addressing mental health issues and reducing the stigma of mental illness within the Black community. An avid runner, she has completed 32 half marathons and 9 full marathons, including 4 international races, finding running to be her personal form of therapy. Dr. Njoy and I chatted about how to get started with running, the role of running clubs as a form of community for runners, and the science behind the “runners-high” that can make running so beneficial to our mental and physical health. Session 380: Black Women In Ghostwriting

When we hear the word “ghostwriter,” what may come up are images of rappers in the studio having someone else write their lyrics. But have you ever considered that some of your favorite viral pop culture moments – from speeches to text messages — were orchestrated by ghostwriters, many of whom are Black women?  Today, I’m joined by Pauleanna Reid, who is a celebrity ghostwriter that helps high-profile leaders and doers turn their personal stories into powerful brand assets. She is the founder of WritersBlok, a full-service ghostwriting agency, composed of a team of content ninjas responsible for some of the most talked-about pop culture moments, books, and noteworthy speeches. During our conversation we discussed how ghostwriters collaborate with high-profile clients, why we shouldn’t associate hiring a ghostwriter with a lack of intellect or talent, and how ghostwriting can provide an untraditional path for those who want to enter the publishing industry. *Please note that this episode contains a story involving suicidal thoughts, which may be triggering for some listeners.* About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Session 379: Domestic Violence & Coping With Triggers

Unfortunately, it feels like every day there is a new incident of domestic abuse that happens to unfold all over our social media timelines, and with it, the potential to encounter violent footage or hear various arguments in support of the abuser. For survivors of domestic violence, it can be difficult to avoid and then cope with being exposed to such triggering content. Joining me today to discuss domestic violence and retraumatization is registered social worker, therapist, content creator, and speaker, Simone Saunders. Simone is the founder and director of The Cognitive Corner, a culturally responsive and trauma-informed group practice.  During our conversation we discussed what retraumatization means and how it manifests itself both mentally and physically, how to practice social media self-care when a triggering incident hits your timeline, and changing the way we discuss domestic violence to be more considerate of survivors. Bonus: How to Die Alone w/ Natasha Rothwell

Many of us fell in love with Natasha Rothwell through her role as the hilarious Kelli in HBO’s Insecure, and later sustained that love as she appeared as Belinda Lindsey in The White Lotus. Natasha is back on our screens, and this time, she’s starring in a show that she also created and executive-produced. It’s called How to Die Alone, and it’s currently streaming on Hulu. I’m thrilled that Natasha joins us this week to chat about some of the major themes of How to Die Alone including self-sabotage, loneliness, and feeling as if you’re behind in life. We also discussed the significance of having a Black, female, plus-sized main character, how the show approaches tough situations such as friendship breakups, and how Natasha is managing IRL feelings of imposter syndrome while also continuing to channel “main character energy.”  About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
