    # 416 - Break bad habits with Dr Anna Lembke author of Dopamine Nation

Dr Anna Lembke's best selling book, Dopamine Nation : https://amzn.to/3VuSHSX

Today I speak with renowned psychiatrist Dr Anna Lembke, author of the terrific book and best seller Dopamine nation.

We live in a world where we are addicted to being overstimulated and we are addicted to overconsumption of everything from food to digital experiences which is very much at odds with how our ancestors lived, given that we live in a time of abundance and they lived in times of scarcity, and the result is mental and phsyical health problems.

In this episode we look at the chemical dopamine which facilitates habit formation and ultimately addiction.

We learn of the pleasure pain balance and how we suffer when there is imbalance favouring either pleasure or pain.

Discover why embracing discomfort or some degree of pain is a good thing and why too much of a good thing is bad for us.

Expect to learn the warning signs to look out for in you or in others that suggest addiction is occurring, plus we hear of some of the steps we can take to mitigate against addictive behaviours.

This discussion doesn't just apply to those with addictions but to people trying to break a bad habit cycle which we are all familiar with.

    Dr Boz book : Ketcontinuum : https://amzn.to/4bMGhfV

    https://www.youtube.com/@DoctorBoz
Today I'm speaking with the famous Dr Boz (Dr Annette Bosworth), if you have any interest at all in metabolic health, weightloss, chronic illness, inflammation this is the conversation for you.

Dr Boz knows more than most about the importance of the foods we consume, she even treated her own mother after she had been diagnosed with cancer by altering her diet in such a way that her mothers quality of life and her lifespan were improved to the astonishment of everyone.

In this episode, we hear about how glucose and fat are used as a fuel source in the body and by switching from glucose to fat we can see dramatic changes in our metabolism.

We ask what foods we should be eating and what food we should be avoiding if we want to achieve a state of ketosis which comes from a low carb, high fat diet.

We discover that this approach is a long term approach and is best served if you have an accountability partner.

Knowing that Dr Boz eats a ketogenic diet herself I ask her whether she enjoys eating food, given so many foods arent allowed, to which she guves a very interesting answer.I enjoyed this chat, not only is Dr Boz a medical professional with a legion of over 600,000 followers online, but she has worked on the front lines treating patients with weight and metabolic issues for many years, indeed her number 1 patient being her mother.

So when Dr Boz speaks about diet and nutrition she has both personal and professional experience of what she's trying to teach others. I hope you enjoy.

#413 - Fast but still eat, to lose weight and live longer - Nutritional Physiologist Inge Lindseth

#413 - Fast but still eat, to lose weight and live longer - Nutritional Physiologist Inge Lindseth

Fasting as we know is doing without food for a period of time. When we fast we stress the body, and the body responds to this fasting by adapting so its prepared for the next time there is a shortage of food. This is how our ancestors lived, given they could go many hours even days without food. And scientists like Prof Valter Longo who I've spoken to before, believe that we can tap into the body's ability to adapt to stresses like a lack of food and reap many biological benefits, from weightloss, to enhanced metabolic function and even to living a longer life.

To explore this subject further I speak with nutritional physiologist Inge Lindseth about how Valter Longo and others have developed a fasting mimicking diet, which involves cyclical fasting without a complete abstinence of food, yet still allowing for the benefits of fasting to occur.

What foods can we eat oon this fasting mimicking diet and how often, plus for how long does the fasting last.

We ask what role does our gut bacteria play in respect of our weight, our metabolic health and how is its diversity is affected by our diet.

We also ask whether we should consume probiotics and if so in what form, supplements or simply food?

Fasting is a form of bodily stress that if used correctly scientists believe can reap many benefits, however, its prudent to say that adoption of a dietary regime that involves fasting absolutely must be done under the supervision of a professional.

    # 412 - Is this the holy grail of ageing ? -Prof Joseph Baur

    # 412 - Is this the holy grail of ageing ? -Prof Joseph Baur

We all want to live as long as is possible, and for many years scientists have been exploring the subject of longevity to unlock its secrets with varying degrees of success, and so to explore ageing and metabolism I'm joined physiologist Prof Joseph Baur.

We ask exactly what causes ageing and why there is no consensus on this question.

We hear about calorie restriction and how it has been shown to increase the life of animals by up to 40%.

Dr Baur busts the myth of antioxidants' ability to stave off ageing.

Expect to hear about the molecule NAD, how it declines as we get older which seems to have an influence on the ageing process and we discover NAD's relationship with an enzyme called CD34. Dr Baur also tells us of the groundbreaking work he has done to discover an important NAD transporter that carries NAD from the cell cytoplasm into the mitochondria.

We also ask how do we boost NAD levels and what significance does NMN have?

Plus we hear about the market for anti-ageing NAD supplementation and why one needs to take anti-ageing assertions made by certain companies with a pinch of salt given the lack of clinical trials.
