Welcome to Find Your Light with Adam MacLean - a show where we shine a light on shame and imagine a Post Shame world.

In Act One we’ll meet a Post Shame warrior - someone who we think is up to something special and has a tool to help teach us to dismantle shame.

Then in Act Two we’ll play a little game of arm chair quarterback by re-examining someone’s public shaming through the lens of Post Shame.

If they had had access to this tool before their downfall, do we think they could have come out of it a better leader and helped others struggling with something similar? We'll see!

In Act Two of today's show we go all the way back to 1972 and Senator Thomas Eagleton being outed for his mental health struggles and getting dropped from George McGovern’s presidential campaign.

    Geolocating Truth with Zach Stafford

    Geolocating Truth with Zach Stafford

Welcome to Episode 7 of Find Your Light! Today our guest is super journalist, host and producer Zach Stafford.

He’s currently a contributor at MSNBC, former editor in chief of the Advocate and former Chief Content Officer at Grindr. We spend a good bit of time discussing the Grindr controversy that Zach reported on that led to his eventual departure.

He’s currently a co-producer of the Pulitzer prize winning and Tony-nominated Broadway musical A STRANGE LOOP (with 11 nominations, the most of any musical this year!). If you have a chance to see the show in New York City - run, don’t walk! It’s spectacular.

In Act Two we discuss the false start of Alexi McCammond as EIC of Teen Vogue after tweets that she already apologized for resurfaced. She attempted to be #PostShame but CondeNast failed her when they didn’t properly prepare for the issue to come up again.

Throughout the conversation we talk a lot about Zach’s commitment to transparency and one of the things he said that really stood out for me was his insight that #PostShame stories “are like water erosion on rocks. Every wave makes a kind of imprint.”

One story at a time. They all make a difference.

Bully Issues with May Malik (part 2)

Bully Issues with May Malik (part 2)

Welcome to Episode 6 of Find Your Light!

Today we have Act Two of my conversation with candidate for New York State Assembly District 73 - May Malik. (If you’d like to hear Act One and get to know May better go back and listen to Episode 5.)

May and I discuss former NYC Mayoral Candidate Scott Stringer who appeared to be a front-runner until a sexual misconduct allegation led to many of his endorsers withdrawing their support and his finishing fifth in the race.

If you’re interested in more background than what we describe in the episode Ben Smith at the NYTimes had a good autopsy of the story.

A “correction” for today’s episode: several times in the conversation I say “emphatic consent” but what I meant to say was, “enthusiastic consent.” Here’s a definition from RAINN: Enthusiastic Consent is a newer model for understanding consent that focuses on a positive expression of consent. Simply put, enthusiastic consent means looking for the presence of a “yes” rather than the absence of a “no.”

Say My Name with May Malik (part 1)

Say My Name with May Malik (part 1)

Welcome to Episode 5! “Say My Name with May Malik (part 1)”

Today’s guest is a real live candidate running for public office living that #PostShame life!

May Malik is running for New York State Assembly District 73 which includes the Manhattan neighborhoods of the Upper East Side, Midtown East, Turtle Bay, Sutton Place, and Murray Hill.

If elected she would be the first muslim black woman elected to state wide office in New York State.

In the interview May is forthcoming about her journey as a Sudanese immigrant and growing up in a traditional household. Despite the fact that the “opposition research” she did on herself didn’t turn up too much she shares the ways her upbringing has influenced her journey processing her shame and the way it shows up in her commitment to service and being a mother.

May Malik is the former Deputy Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and former Director of Public-Private Partnerships at NYC Service within the New York City Mayor's Office.

In this episode May “comes out” about her given name at birth and what it’s like to live as someone whose brand IS their name.

We split this episode into two parts because the issue of naming ended up inspiring some story time for Adam about his own name in addition to revisiting the Six Steps of Post Shame.

    Greedy Bisexual with Jen Winston

    Greedy Bisexual with Jen Winston

Welcome to Episode 4 of FIND YOUR LIGHT!

Today’s guest is author Jen Winston, whose book Greedy: Notes from a Bisexual Who Wants Too Much made me LAUGH OUT LOUD.

We talk about her book and the significance of millennials aging into the era of writing memoirs. We talk a lot about gender, sexuality and the many phases of coming out.

We also touch on a subject that deserves its own podcast entirely: Bugs Bunny.

In Act Two we discuss Andrew Gillum, a former rising star in the Democratic party who lost the race for Governor of Florida in 2018 and later came out as bisexual after a scandal involving poblematic drinking, drug use, and gay male friends.

To watch the Tamron Hall interview with Gillum and his wife R. Jai, here’s a playlist on Youtube.
