Every week is better than the last as their chemistry builds with the compilation they’ve created together. Although the early episodes are great too. You can’t help but feel them enjoying, delighting, recoiling, & at times gritting their teeth & enduring the truths (& at times blatantly stupid fairy tales) that these movies set out to tell. Their astonishingly astute evaluations along with their sophomoric silliness give what could be a dry retelling of stories we could hunt down ourselves with no deeper exploration of the content, or a self important rant podcast about how Hollywood is crap a seriousness & a levity that make me smile goofily for at least an hour a week. & there are some real gems if you go backwards like I’ve had to when they were first feeling out the parameters of where they would take the medium.
I don’t always watch the films to prepare but I always learn a lot about history both recent & remote (& how similar they are).
They break down everything the writers, directors, & actors try to convey into sub atomic particles of the agony of loss & the ecstasy of love, the tragedy of wasted youth, & the terror of losing everything including your dignity & your soul to a force beyond your control. They examine the myriad things that lead to wars, the infinite multiplicity of its aftermath, &, dare I say, the organic human condition.
I could listen to John talk for 8 hours & not stop to eat, breathe, or drink coffee. I might be in love. Adam & Ben are adorable & you even forgive their endless adolescence because John is there to balance it all out.
Bravo boys! It’s podcasting magic. 5 100-sided dice!
