This podcast is a good antidote to the tech bro libertarian ideology that so dominates Silicon Valley.

GIU taught me what cybernetics is, seriously enriched my understanding of marxism, and it’s the only leftist podcast that doesn’t make me feel like I’m trapped at the bottom of an abandoned well. Check it out!!

Excellent intersection of the left politics and technology and always asking great questions

General Intellect Unit produces thoughtful commentary on important works in STEM and science fiction. It's refreshing to learn about technological advancements from the standpoint of democracy and societal health. These podcasters don't sugar coat the latest & greatest new gadets. This is a cautious risk assement of technology, capitalism, growth and excess. They aren't pessimists, they simply understand that advancements in STEM can take society on two paths, depending on who controls it: toward freedom or towards authoritarianism.

As a tech worker on the left, it's easy to observe both the transformative potential of our high-tech, connected world, and also the failings of past conceptions of this potential. Within the industry, much of the same ideological fervor which fueled these failures remains at the helm, synthesizing left ideals of interdependence and social liberalism with right-wing ideals of hyperindividuality within a market context. General Intellect Unit could not be more timely. Their analysis provokes thought about the current zeitgeist and how it connects with the past which is all too often overlooked or buried beneath the glittering spectacle of the modern world.

This is now one my new favorite podcasts. I find it to be a unique and sophisticated in blending a description and critique of hard social and economic theory with references to literature and film, and comparisons to current events and political history. I highly admire the hosts’ ability to comment intelligently on so many layers of a given topic. I appreciate how they really get down to business - each show has an agenda, yet they allow for a free form discussion. There is no fluffy small talk, or histrionics. Yet it is a lively, off-the-cuff discussion that entertains while it informs and provokes. I share the hosts conviction that the future of our world depends on whether citizens at large can discuss the difficult issues we face, form opinions about possible solutions, and, crucially, exert the power that could change the system. We must have a direction that is egalitarian and effective in protecting all of mankind, not just a wealthy class that will otherwise take over full control. Technology must be harnessed to improve the quality of our lives, not be a tool employed by a ruling class to attack and weaken us. This podcast promises to provide a forum that will contribute to this necessary discussion. I applaud the hosts for rising to the occasion and devoting the time and intellect required to produce such a engaging, relevant, and important product.
