96 episodes

Kate Vlasek and Lauryn Hunter are two women in their mid-thirties who generally geek out about all things pop culture, particularly nostalgic pop culture. A spur-of-the-moment purchase of a random assortment of Baby-Sitters Club books on eBay sparked the excitement that would become Generation BSC.
And what is Generation BSC? First, it’s a micro-generation Kate and Lauryn have identified with between Generation X and Millennials. This micro-generation has also been called the Oregon Trail Generation, Generation Catalano, the Star Wars Generation, Xennials, and Elder Millennials - essentially, for our purposes, those born between 1980 and 1985 who would have read Baby-Sitters Club books as they were being released in the late 80s and early 90s. (As an aside, we've come to realize since starting our journey with the Baby-Sitters Club, however, that Generation BSC really is anyone who has grown or is growing up with the BSC, but we're examining it from our perspective in particular.) Second, it’s a biweekly episodic podcast where Kate and Lauryn revisit each book in the Baby-Sitters Club series both looking back at how they approached the topics and themes when they read the books as children and comparing that with how they approach the same topics and themes in 2019 (and beyond).
Eventually, the podcast will include guests and “Very Special Episodes” where Kate and Lauryn visit other pop culture from the same era and later, using the Baby-Sitters Club and Generation BSC as a jumping off point for discussion.
Whether you’ve loved the Baby-Sitters Club since childhood or are jumping in for the first time, you’ll have a great time reading along with Kate and Lauryn.

Episode 049: Claudia and the Genius of Elm Street!

Episode 049: Claudia and the Genius of Elm Street!

Claudia gets a regular babysitting job with a genius child star named Rosie Wilder. Rosie's parents have done a real number on her and she spends all her time taking lessons, practicing, and working (and regurgitating lines from her parents about said career and her life generally). It's a real contrast with the home life of our Superbrat Derek Masters. Claudia ultimately connects with Rosie over drawing and they put on an art show together (where we see the junk food-inspired pop art that is classic Claudia). The girls all pitch in on the art show and babysitting Rosie on occasion and even Janine gets to be an honorary BSC member!

    Episode 048: Jessi's Wish!

    Episode 048: Jessi's Wish!

It's the volunteering book! Jessi gets interested in volunteering at Stoneybrook Elementary to keep a club where the kids do good deeds in the community and brings the rest of the BSC along. The SES school club included a girl named Danielle who is recovering from leukemia and who connects with Becca, Charlotte, and Jessi and ends up with a BSC universe version of Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World. Jessi's Wish had so many opportunities to go so wrong, but it threaded the needle to a perfectly pleasant and quintessential BSC book. We really did enjoy this book and it resulted in one of our favorite conversations so far!

    Episode 047: Mallory on Strike!

    Episode 047: Mallory on Strike!

Mallory is all about winning a writing competition at Stoneybrook Middle School for Young Authors' Day (that inexplicably has nothing to do with the 8th grade author projects from Mary Anne Misses Logan). Her inability to find time to work on her submission without constant interruption reveals just how far her parentification goes and she finally goes on strike. For one day... In usual BSC fashion, the conflict is resolved, but sadly it's an unsatisfying outcome for us.

Sometimes it’s too much

There is so much to love about this podcast. I love looking back at these books,A lot of times I completely agree. Even at age 8 some of the books to be pretty tone deaf.

Sometimes the wokeness gets too much for me.I get it white people are all racist and nobody else does anything bad ever and we should hate ourselves. Can we go back to the books? I like looking at the books from an adult point of you. But also these books are for a certain age at a certain time. We can’t go back in the future we can just continue to do better.

Logan is pretty awful, much better in the series! But in the past episode he was called an incel. At 13 years old!? The the heck! How can guys under the age of like 17 P insoles? A lot of teenagers both guys and girls don’t have sex. Even though they want to.It just came off as really offensive and I had to turn it off :( it stinks because I don’t like Logan either

Love this

I absolutely loved the Babysitters Club books growing up and I am so happy I found this podcast! It made me think of the books in such a different light and makes me want to dig out my old books and start to reread them! I really like the predictions segment and the fashion piece! I always liked the descriptions from the books and it’s interesting hearing them now- especially since I’m so much older and can’t even imagine wearing some of those outfits now!
P.S. I was totally a Mary Anne growing up!

Say hello to your friends!

The best BSC podcast with a nuanced and critical view of the books! And at the same time...a ton of fun to listen to!
