    Ep. 43 It’s a Choice, It’s a Lifestyle: Deconstructing Deconstruction

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective.

In this episode, Tyler gets meta AF and deconstructs deconstruction. If you’re new to the concept, deconstruction is the method of taking something apart, analyzing, and questioning it. It is a core theme of this podcast, but something Tyler doesn't typically explicitly talk about.

Using his essays from the book “The Deconstructionist Playbook,” he examines the choice of religion and faith, our inner voices, abandonment, and the options we have after deconstruction. Join Tyler in deconstructing deconstruction! And if you want to enter for a chance to win a free signed copy of the book, the details to enter are below:

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective.

In this episode, Tyler talks with the inspiring Rachel Myers! Rachel, along with her husband Derek, began a little Instagram page called Your Favorite Heretics -- it was something that began for their family and friends -- a place for them to share their deconstruction journey, but when one post went viral, things shifted a bit! They now have over 40 thousand followers and have cultivated a beautiful, safe community for people deconstructing and recovering from church trauma. They aim to create content that gives language to people's experience and help them along in their healing. An inclusive community for all types of people dealing with the messy undoing of toxic theology, they are welcome to all.

Tyler and Rachel discuss trauma bonding, navigating relationships as one deconstructs their faith, her journey toward coming out as a-sexual, evangelicalism, and finding divinity within others!

One of my Must Listens

How Tyler gets so many interesting guests I'll never know. He puts a new spin on religion and spiratuality with humor, respect, and facts. There's something on this show for everyone whether you consider yourself religious or not.

Meh

I came across this podcast looking for new philosophy-esque podcasts. It had 5 stars but only a few reviews (which I figure are from friends and family), and I figured I would give it a shot.

Somewhere in here there’s a good podcast. He does do some good background reading and research. When he talks about historical elements, it’s definitely above average. Which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1.

However, all of this is colored by what I perceive to be an “axe to grind” with religion. There are a few inconsistencies and cherry-picked examples (even if researched) that I spotted in each episode, which results in a very one-sided picture. He definitely started with a position and looked for evidence/facts to reinforce it. He’s made an echo-chamber for himself. -1 star

While some of the content was alright, what really turned me off was the humor. Have you ever listened to a bad radio shock jock? Or remember Crazy Ira from Parks and Recreation? That’s this guy, but with interesting bits of history sprinkled in. Completely misses the mark. And frankly, some of it just seems unnecessarily mean. (He called Pope Francis a drag queen (Francesca or something) and a man who likes dressing up in white dresses… like what? I don’t even get how that’s funny to anyone over 15.) The humor overall is pretty forced and try-hard. Doesn’t come off natural (to me at least), and some of the attempted jokes just make me cringe. And that’s like 40% of this show. -2 stars for that

Overall, there are better socialist/left-wing/sjw/whatever-we’re-calling-ourselves-now podcasts out there that address big topics like modern society, feminism, religion, homosexuality, corruption, and the like.
