    Hawk argues it is an affordability problem. Zohran Mamdani's winning mayoral platform was built on housing costs, rent control, free transit, daycare, and taxing the rich. Those policies poll extremely well. The word socialism polls badly. Paul Krugman's Substack draws the distinction clearly: what most Americans actually support is social democracy, a market system with progressive taxation, safety nets, and regulation to limit inequality. DSA co-chair Megan Romer put it plainly after the Colorado result, telling the Democratic establishment they had been warned. Ro Khanna weighed in immediately after the race. Half of Americans cannot meet their basic daily needs. Trump's $2.2 billion financial disclosure dropped the same week as the Colorado primary. Establishment Democrats have been captured by corporate donors, the one percent, and AIPAC, and the voting base is done pretending otherwise.     The headline finding: fourteen of twenty-one study participants, two thirds, had an immediate negative reaction when asked about democracy. Hawk reads quotes from participants by name throughout the study, including a Wyoming homeschooling mother who says she does not like the word democracy, a Michigan retiree who says if they had a democracy it would be a problem, a Wyoming delivery driver who says every small town would be outvoted by cities, and a South Carolina woman who calls democracy two wolves and one sheep deciding who is for dinner. Hawk also addresses JVL's core thesis, that these voters respond to Trump's illiberalism not in spite of it but because of it, alongside Sarah Longwell's more sympathetic read of the same voters. He engages with his brother's argument that MAGA voters who reject Trump would lose their family systems, friendships, and community standing in doing so, and explains why that argument moves him somewhat but does not change his position.     This Supreme Court is a Weapon of White Supremacy

    Haitian plaintiffs did raise exactly that claim, arguing that Trump's decision to strip their TPS was motivated by racial animus and citing Trump and administration officials' own racist statements about Haitian immigrants. Alito's response in the majority opinion was that because Trump expresses hostility toward immigrants broadly, his actions cannot be considered racially motivated. Hawk points out that this reasoning ignores Trump's own documented statements about countries populated by Black and brown people, and the fact that of approximately 6,500 refugees admitted to the United States in 2025, all but three were white South Africans. Justice Elena Kagan wrote in dissent that the evidence from Trump's own statements made clear the TPS revocation targeting Haitian immigrants was driven by race and racial animus, and that those statements were so egregious Alito did not quote or cite them in the majority opinion. Hawk connects this ruling to the court's recent dismantling of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the resulting race to redraw congressional maps across Confederate states, arguing that together these decisions represent a court that has become an instrument of white supremacy and authoritarian consolidation of executive power.
