Belonging To One Another with Geoffrey Cohen

Belonging To One Another with Geoffrey Cohen

Geoffrey L. Cohen is a Professor of Psychology and the James G. March Professor of Organizational Studies in Education and Business at Stanford University. He is a social psychologist by training and received his PHD at Stanford and his BA at Cornell.
Professor Cohen’s research examines the processes that shape people’s sense of belonging and self-concept, and the role that these processes play in various social problems. He has studied the big and small threats to belonging and self-integrity that people encounter in school, work, health care settings, politics, communities, and relationships. He and others have developed concrete, science-backed strategies to create more welcoming spaces for people from all walks of life. He believes that the development of psychological theory depends not just on descriptive and observational research but on theory-driven intervention. He has long been inspired by Kurt Lewin’s quip, “The best way to understand something is to try to change it.”

How To Human

I will come back to review particular episodes. I’m so glad I discovered this podcast.

Since being diagnosed with Covid-19 and flu strain B a week and a half ago I have been on a journey.

Intellectually I have known many things that are important. I have struggled most of my life since my father died when I had just turned 8. I am 66 years old.

For the first time since I was a child I am happy and at peace. You could have preached to me all day but none of it would have helped my anxiety, depression and low self-esteem until God’s timing was right.

Later. Podcasts like Sam’s are part of my new maintenance and tune-up program.

Amazing

Authentic, human and real! Taught me that opportunities are never lost, they reappear, we don't have to hide our mistakes or feel ashamed, help will ways show up! Loved Ann Lamott, John Kaag, Nicole LaPera and Paul William's episode. Makes everything seem attainable and possible. Unstaged, refreshing, honest and entertaining! Give me many things to reflect upon! Love to the openess to sharing the recovery journey. Than you Tim Ferris for recommending this podcast!

Only a beginning

I just barely finished Sam’s interview with Paul Williams and I ran to this site to write a review.
You two made me feel so alive and part of you, not only because I have what you have, but because you reminded me that I have value, as a person and as a creator. Paul said, “You (Sam) have the gift of making me catch myself drifting into performance mode, which is unconscious…”. Yes. I have been writing a book and am every day second guessing my ability to really add anything to anyone’s experience. But the process is the gift. This interview offered so much in the way of inspiration and reminded me of the importance of listening, and noticing all the little parts of being human. I ran to my journal to get down what I have been thinking about and wondering if I am foolish to think it matters. “The gift is in the moment and don’t waste time judging yourself.” —Paul Williams.
