    1 John 5:18-21 What We Know

    This Sunday we will finish the book as we study 1 John 5:18-21. All through the letter John has focused on evidence and assurance. He has shown us the evidence of salvation and how we can have assurance that we have been born of God. The text has also insisted at every point that this evidence is what God does in the people He saves, not a standard we must meet in order to earn life. John repeatedly showed us the evidence of God’s work in the life of those He saves: faith in the true Jesus whom the apostles proclaimed, a life whose direction is pointed toward keeping his commandments, and a lifestyle of love for the brothers and sisters. In 5:13 he said he wrote these things so that we would know we have eternal life. These are the evidences that a person has been born again. In 5:18–21 he closes by telling those born of God three things they can know with certainty, and ends with one command. The “we” in these verses is not everyone who sits in the church. It is those in whom God’s work is already present. John says we know that Jesus keeps his own, so the one born of God does not continue on in a lifestyle of sin, and the evil one cannot overpower him. We know that we are of God, while the whole world lies in the power of the evil one, with no neutral ground between the two. We know the true God only because the Son has come and given us understanding, and we are in him who is true only because we are united to Jesus. And because that is so, John tells us to keep ourselves from idols. John warns of here is any god we invent to suit ourselves, and anything that occupies the throne that belongs to the true God. I.     1 John 5:13-17 The Blessing & Responsibility Of Assurance

    Sunday, we will examine 1 John 5:13-17, the first part of John’s conclusion. Here, he summarizes what he has taught throughout the letter and shows us the difference that assurance makes in the life of every believer. We won’t see new evidences of assurance here, instead, he is telling us what this assurance does. First, it gives us certainty that we already have eternal life if we believe in the name of the Son of God. “These things” John has written are the three evidences we have already seen: right belief in the true Jesus, a life that strives to keep his commandments, and active love for the brothers and sisters. Those evidences do not make us God’s children; they let the child who is already in the family see what God has done in them. Second, assurance gives us access to come before God. Because of Jesus there is no veil, no priest to go through, and no rituals to do. We can come before the Father with confidence, knowing he hears us and answers when we ask according to his will. Third, that access comes with responsibility. If we see a brother or sister sinning a sin that does not lead to death, we are to pray, and God will give them life. The sins do and do not lead to death have always been a source of controversy. We will deal with this on Sunday. Ultimately, John sums up his teaching by telling us the blessings and responsibility the gospel’s assurance has given us. I. Assurance That Gives Us Certainty (v. 13) II.
