EPISODE 147: ROMANTHA BOTHA (DIGITAL CULTURAL ARCHIVIST)

In this episode, I sit down with Romantha Botha, who describes herself as a Digital Cultural Archivist and explains exactly what that means. From her early work as a trained journalist exploring identity, culture and heritage, to producing documentary series such as Jou Ma se Taal and Sex and Pleasure, delivering a TEDx Talk and participating in public debates, Romantha has made a career out of challenging inherited ideas and uncomfortable conversations. She shares more about two exciting new shows in the making, Dinner with Mzansi and Dinner with AfriKarens, both aimed at encouraging community reflection. Check out her platforms to see how you can view, support or get involved! We explore what it takes to have meaningful conversations about building a better South Africa, how curiosity can help us move beyond shame, and why we need to lean into uncomfortable discussions rather than avoid them. Romantha also reflects on her experience of creating a separate cultural identity to survive in the workplace, unpacks the subtle, inherited discomforts that continue to fuel bias and racism, and talks about her heated exchange with the artist who painted Krotoa. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to and learning from someone who makes it her job to go down the rabbit holes the rest of us sometimes avoid. As always - thank you to our main sponsor Roman's Pizza! EPISODE 144: PULE (Bombshelter Beast, Cradle Crew, Church of the Rolling Tongue)

I sit down with one of our country’s most fascinating storytellers, versed in the deeper linguistic and cultural history traditions of Azania and !Naremâb (Southern Africa), for a conversation that will blow your mind.As a musician and comedian, Pule shares some incredibly interesting insights into an approach to comedy, rap, and movement. As a panlingual lyricist, performer, scholar of linguistics, and cultural technologist, Pule opens up a whole world of indigenous interconnections that many of us have probably never even heard of before. This conversation genuinely inspired me to learn more about my own roots, and about the history of South Africa and its people.Pule explains how being born into a community with a deep awareness of history, heritage, and language, was a foundation that developed into a lifelong passion and way of seeing the world. After travelling through 21 countries across the African continent, extraordinary experiences and discoveries are shared, uncovering some of the hidden histories and connections between different cultures and communities. We also talk about Pule's involvement in the Cradle Crew Hip-Hop mentorship initiative, and with the new band, Church of the Rolling Tongue, currently hitting stages and releasing new music. This is one of those conversations that reminds you just how much history is hiding in the words we speak every day - and how much more there still is to discover about who we are and where we come from.
