Spellbound: The Story of Charisma in America (with Molly Worthen)

What happens when the power of the Holy Spirit collides with the chaos of American politics? Join Joshua Lewis as he sits down with historian Molly Worthen to explore her book Spellbound, which traces the fascinating and often controversial story of charisma—both spiritual and political—from Puritan prophets to modern-day leaders like Donald Trump. We explore the tension between institutional authority and personal revelation that has defined American Christianity and culture for centuries. Discover how figures like Anne Hutchinson challenged Puritan ministers by claiming direct assurance from the Holy Spirit, how George Whitefield revolutionized preaching with theatrical emotion, and how Joseph Smith blended enlightenment rationalism with spiritual experience to birth Mormonism. Professor Worthen, a historian at UNC Chapel Hill, reveals how charismatic leaders aren't always the charming orators we imagine—instead, they're polarizing storytellers who invite followers into transcendent narratives that give suffering and struggle cosmic significance. We explore the dangerous line between prophetic truth and spiritual manipulation, examining everyone from radical Quaker Benjamin Lay to Martin Luther King Jr., and asking the crucial question: how do we test the spirits in an age of radical individualism? Whether you're fascinated by church history, concerned about discernment in charismatic movements, or trying to understand the spiritual undercurrents shaping our political moment, this episode offers essential insights into how divine power—or the claim to it—has shaped the American experiment. 0:00 – Introduction 0:46 – Molly's background and ministry 4:49 – Defining charisma 20:11 – Anne Hutchinson & Puritan Massachusetts 30:00 – Donna Beatrice & the Congo rebellion 36:25 – George Fox & the Quaker movement 44:01 – George Whitefield & emotional preaching 50:28 – Charisma & American individualism 54:05 – Joseph Smith & the Mormon church 1:00:14 – Closing thoughts on charisma & discernment ABOUT THE GUEST: 📖BOOK https://a.co/d/e9yLtGC 🙏 God’s been GOOD! 🙏 Watch our year-end message from Joshua Lewis & see how your support helps us resource & equip believers in God's Word & Spirit! Testing 2025 Prophecies: Emma Stark, Kay Nash & Tomi Arayomi

In this end-of-year episode, the Remnant Radio crew breaks down prophetic declarations given at the start of 2025, comparing them against real-world events and spiritual markers we've witnessed throughout the year. We'll discuss the hits, the misses, and the "jury's still out" moments with honesty and biblical integrity. Our goal is to uphold the standard Scripture gives us for testing prophecy and holding modern prophets accountable to God's Word. We'll explore critical questions every believer should ask: How do we properly test prophetic words according to 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21? What separates genuine prophetic insight from wishful thinking or cultural commentary? How should the body of Christ respond when prophecies don't come to pass? And what does biblical discernment look like in an age of viral prophetic declarations? Whether you're navigating the prophetic movement, curious about spiritual gifts, or simply want to grow in biblical discernment, this episode offers practical wisdom rooted in Scripture. We're committed to honoring authentic moves of the Holy Spirit while maintaining the accountability that protects God's people from deception. As we close out 2025, join us for an honest conversation about prophecy, discernment, and what it means to test everything and hold fast to what is good. 0:00 – Introduction 3:26 – Theology of prophecy and why we review national words 8:20 – Tomi Arayomi’s prophecy 28:34 – Kay Nash prophecy 45:59 – Emma Stark / Sam Robertson prophecy 57:30 – Closing thoughts 🙏 God’s been GOOD! 🙏 Watch our year-end message from Joshua Lewis & see how your support helps us resource & equip believers in God's Word & Spirit! The Theocast & Grace Reformed Network Controversy: Interview with Jon Moffit & Doug Van Dorn

Can theological debates destroy Christian unity? In this raw, unfiltered conversation, we sit down with Jon Moffitt (Theocast) and Doug Van Dorn (Reformed Fringe) to discuss one of the more controversial splits in the Reformed world—and what it reveals about how we handle disagreement in the body of Christ.  Jon and Doug open up about their journey exploring the spiritual realm, the divine council, and the angel of the Lord—topics that sparked fierce opposition within their own theological circles. What began as thoughtful biblical exploration turned into accusations of heresy, demands for public repentance, and ultimately, painful separation from longtime friends and ministry partners. This isn't just another theology debate. It's a sobering look at how pride, fear, and miscommunication can fracture Christian unity, even among believers who share the same core convictions. Jon and Doug discuss the Grace Reformed Network controversy, the role of Michael Heiser's work in Reformed circles, and why talking about angels and spiritual warfare became so divisive. We dive deep into questions that matter: How should Christians handle theological disagreements? When does doctrinal clarity become doctrinal gatekeeping? And how do we fight for truth without destroying the very unity Christ prayed for ? Whether you're Reformed, charismatic, or somewhere in between, this conversation offers crucial lessons about humility, spiritual warfare, and the cost of standing for what you believe. The real enemy isn't the brother who disagrees with you—it's the one who wants to see the church divided. Join Joshua Lewis, Michael Miller, Jon Moffitt, and Doug Van Dorn for a conversation about Christian theology, biblical interpretation, spiritual warfare, church unity, and what happens when good men disagree. 0:00 – Introduction 7:12 – The (Reformed) Fringe podcast 12:43 – Heiser, the Divine Council, & pushback  20:11 – Online debates, slander, & controversy 31:05 – Strawmanning & accusations of heresy 43:06 – Internal concerns & pressure to shut down Fringe 50:04 – Email ultimatum 56:02 – Board letters, Jon & Doug’s clarifying response 1:02:24 – Doug’s theology of the Angel of the Lord 1:13:35 – How GRN handled Doug’s old paper & calls for due process 1:19:23 – Reflections on unity, charity, & spiritual warfare 1:23:28 – Closing 🙏 God’s been GOOD! 🙏 Watch our year-end message from Joshua Lewis & see how your support helps us resource & equip believers in God's Word & Spirit! The Untold History Of Women In The Assemblies Of God: Interview With Dr. Joy Qualls

Joshua Lewis sits down with Dr. Joy Qualls—Pentecostal scholar, Assemblies of God minister, and author to explore the history, theology, and lived experience of women in Pentecostal leadership. From early Scandinavian pietist revivals and Azusa Street to modern Assemblies of God policy, they trace how Pentecostal theology of Holy Spirit empowerment collided with institutional respectability, evangelical politics, and unspoken “invisible fences” around women’s roles in church leadership. Along the way, they unpack stories of forgotten Pentecostal heroines like Rachel Sislo, Amanda Benedict, May Eleanor Fry, and Blanch Elizabeth Britton—women who planted churches, prayed in revival, confronted injustice, and literally died on the road preaching the gospel. They also explore how AG policy has officially affirmed women in ministry since 1935, even while local practice has often lagged behind, creating dissonance for called women in Pentecostal churches. This episode will challenge both complementarian and egalitarian assumptions. It raises hard questions about ecclesiology, spiritual gifts vs. church offices, spiritual warfare over calling, and how movements lose their prophetic edge when they chase institutional respectability. This conversation provides historical context, theological categories, and pastoral wisdom for navigating the debate of women in ministry without capitulating to cultural pressure on either side. 0:00 – Introduction 2:27 – Book overview 4:59 – The rhetoric versus reality for women in AG 8:39 – Assemblies of God policy 13:31 – National leadership changes 16:54 – Growth in women’s credentialing and leadership 17:00 – Women’s role before Azusa 22:19 – Early female leaders 36:46 – Institutionalization challenges 43:03 – Pendulum swings 51:47 – Influence of respectability and evangelical integration 57:12 – Recent decades: education, policy, and hope for the future 1:03:44 – Final thoughts ABOUT THE GUEST: 📖BOOK https://a.co/d/ioTgWmb Dr. Qualls is Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Associate Dean in the Division of Communication at Biola University 🙏 God’s been GOOD! 🙏 Watch our year-end message from Joshua Lewis & see how your support helps us resource & equip believers in God's Word & Spirit!
