    I KNOW A GUY

In this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about why trusted experts, hands-on experience, and human connection still matter in a digital age. From your smarty-pants car guy - to that friend with a unique skill and "know how" that you admire... The people around us are such a rich resource and can offer us the kind of lived wisdom that a quick internet search just can’t provide. Consider this your encouragement to go old school and pick up the phone, reach out to connect and let's keep learning from one another! While also keeping in mind to respect people’s time and expertise (especially if this is how they make their living) and to show your genuine gratitude for their willingness to help! Blood Is Not Thicker Than Water

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about the old saying "blood is thicker than water," and why I don't buy it. I've seen families use that old adage to try to control people and the narrative, keep those old secrets buried, and demand loyalty... Even when those relationships have already caused real harm. I discuss finding the "right distance" with family members, ranging from wicked close - all the way to no contact - and the grief and sadness that can come with that not easily made decision. I also get into the right you have to tell your own story - even when other people might get their panties in a bunch about it. 😆 We also touch upon why you sometimes gotta' say no to signing the family "code of silence", and not be willing to protect the people who do harm - just because you're related. Plus, I consider why sometimes maple syrup is thicker than blood - when it comes to finding your chosen family (aka: friends and sweeties). Think of this sucker as a permission slip to go ahead and get curious about questioning it all! ❤️ KAREN KENNEY BIO: Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. LIVE YOUR FECKIN' LIFE

OK, so here's the thing. Somewhere along the way we all got told to "document everything." (I’m looking at you Gary Vee ) Now it feels like we can't go to the grocery store, a concert, or our kid's soccer game without thinking, “How can I turn this into a post?” The other day I left my phone at home (once on purpose, once by mistake). At first I was like, "Oh no!" (mostly because I want to be able to call AAA if it’s necessary ) But then it turned into this little taste of freedom. Wheeeeeeeeeeee! There were no pictures taken, no texts pinging, and no little red numbers glaring back at me. It was just me, being right there - in the right now. Because, once we start planning for how we'll share a moment later… we've already left it. We're warp-speed time traveling into the future - instead of being there in the room having the full-fledged experience with our sweeties, our friends, our human or furry kids, and our people. We end up missing the moments that make up our life. I'm not saying that devices are evil. (Trust me, I love sharing a wicked cute picture of Toby Pajamas or Bunchie.) This episode is just an invitation from my heart to yours to give it a try it for a few hours. Or heck, even for a whole Sunday. Put the phone down and just go live your feckin’ life. Report back what it was like if you want to - you know I’m always curious to hear! And wherever you do go, may you, your love, and your real in-person, real-time presence be a blessing. ARE YOU AN ILLUMINATOR OR A DIMINISHER?

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about the difference between being an Illuminator and a Diminisher. And why some people can make you feel seen, lit up, and welcome, while others can make you feel kinda' invisible. I tell a story about some recent experiences of being in rooms with people I've known my whole life who never asked me a single question about myself. (WTF is up with that? 😆) And how familiarity can breed contempt when folks decide who you are, stick you in a box, and never update their perspectives or systems. I also talk about David Brooks' wonderful book How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. We explore the qualities that he says keep Diminishers from truly seeing us (egotism, anxiety, naive realism, stereotyping, the static mindset)... And the qualities that make Illuminators so magnetic - their tenderness, receptivity, active curiosity, affection, generosity, and a holistic attitude! I also talk about the prayer of Saint Francis, my DSP (Daily Spiritual Practice), and why I think Mister Rogers and Ted Lasso are some go-to examples of being Illuminators who bring illumination! (David Brooks agrees 😉) We’re also reminded of that line from A Course in Miracles that tells us: You are the light of the world! Double Amen Hands to that! 🙌 I believe that one of the greatest ways we show love is to pay attention - so my hope is that wherever you go - may your presence, your curiosity, and your illumination be a blessing! ❤️ KAREN KENNEY BIO: Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. STOP HALF-ASSING IT

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about why we need to stop half-assing our lives, work, the art we make, and our relationships! Because of what it really says about our self-respect when we keep settling for “good enough.” I share a real-life story about a worker with a kinda’ crappy attitude, who left streaky results, and showed practically zero care. And how that kind of half-hearted effort slowly poisons your reputation, your relationships, and your ability to grow. (Forget about those referrals, kid) So, if you’re tired of phoning it in (whatever “it” may be for you) and you’re ready to raise your standards... Plus, you genuinely want to show up full-hearted, and put real love into what you do… Then hit play on this sucker and let’s dive in together! ❤️ KAREN KENNEY BIO: Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. THE COURAGE TO BE LOVED

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what it really means to have the courage to be loved. By taking a look through the lens of the one-and-only Dolly Parton’s life, legacy, faith, humor, and big-hearted generosity. I share how Dolly managed to be wicked authentic, outspoken, and spiritually grounded! All while still being one of the most beloved humans on the planet (a recent poll out of UMass Lowell gave her an amazing net favorability rating of +65!). I also explore the difference between trying to be “palatable” for "likes" versus being fully yourself and letting people love (or not) the real you. If you’ve ever struggled with people-pleasing, fear of judgment, or holding back your true self in real life (or online), this episode is a loving invitation to flex your courage myuscles... And to show up more honestly, to take a stand for what you believe in, and to allow yourself to be truly seen, known, and loved! ❤️ KAREN KENNEY BIO: Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. LIFE IS NOT THE INTERNET

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about how the internet has trained so many people to believe that every thought they have deserves a comment, their opinion, or a post... And why that shit doesn’t really fly in real life. I tell a couple of stories about unsolicited opinions (given both online and in person) and the emotional impact they can have on the receivers. I also share how you can start using your voice more thoughtfully by revisiting the “three gates” of communication! These questions are simple, yet powerful: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? And when put to good use, these suckers can save us all a lot of unnecessary suffering. So, here's my invitation to you (and reminder to myself) to pause before you speak, type, send, or hit publish! Together, let's explore turning off the “comment section” in certain conversations, standing up against cruelty, and choosing to use our words as a force for good, both on and off the internet. ❤️ KAREN KENNEY BIO: Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. STEVEN PRESSFIELD: ON RESISTANCE, SELF-DISCIPLINE, AND SELF-REINFORCEMENT

My guest today is legendary, bestselling author Steven Pressfield, who's known for his work on creativity, self-discipline, and how to overcome the inner force of what he calls, "capital R" - Resistance. He’s written 25 books including the wildly popular - The War of Art, Turning Pro, Do The Work, and Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants to Be - which have influenced tons of successful writers, thinkers, artists and entrepreneurs - including Ryan Holiday and Rich Roll. Steven wrote for 27 years before his first novel The Legend of Bagger Vance got published and made into a Robert Redford film starring Matt Damon and Will Smith. He’s also written a memoir Gov Cheese and many historical novels like, A Man at Arms, Gates of Fire, and his latest, The Arcadian! I’ve been reading and recommending his work for years, so to have him on the show felt like such a full-circle, meant-to-be moment! Here’s some of what Steven and I dive into in this episode: Resistance (with a capital R): That invisible, diabolical force that shows up every time you try to write the book, record the podcast, go to the gym, leave the job, or step toward your calling. “Resistance will kill you”: Steven shares why not following your creative or spiritual calling doesn’t just make you uncomfortable… it can slowly kill your spirit, your self‑trust, and your life-force. Self‑Discipline & Ritual: We talk about why discipline gets such a bad rap, how it actually becomes an act of self‑love, and what it looks like in real life to “put your ass where your heart wants to be.” Art as a Spiritual Practice: Steve and I dig into the idea that we’re spiritual beings in a messy, beautiful, often painful world – and how making art (in any form) is one of the most powerful ways we can respond to and answer that. His new book, The Arcadian: He shares the 40‑year journey behind this story, karma, warriors, and what it costs a soul to live a life of violence… and try to find redemption. I also share a bit about my own writing journey with my memoir, and how bumping up against Resistance has pushed me deeper into my spiritual practice and creative life. This episode is for you if: 📌 You’re a writer, artist, entrepreneur, or big-hearted human with a dream 📌 You keep saying, “I’ll start tomorrow” (and tomorrow never quite seems to come) 📌 You feel called to something more, but resistance, fear, and self‑doubt keep tripping you up If that’s you, I think this conversation will feel like both a loving hug and a gentle kick in the pants. ❤️ CONNECT WITH STEVEN: Website Books Sarsaparilla Media Writing Wednesdays Resistance Reset (A Course) YouTube Instagram Facebook X TikTok KAREN KENNEY BIO: Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach.
