The New World Pictures Podcast is dedicated to every movie released by New World Pictures.  We talk about the things we loved and the things we hated along with the detailed history of each film's history and production.    Founded by the infamous Roger Corman, New World Pictures was responsible for the greatest genre and exploitation films of the 1970's and 1980's.  Remember all those movies that lived proudly in the Action, Horror, Comedy and Sci-Fi isles of the video store?  Titles like Death Race 2000, Hellraiser, Heathers and Piranha.  They were all made by New World Pictures.   In addition to talking about the films themselves, we talk with the Writers, Producers and Directors who worked with New World Pictures.

    Interview with director and VFX artist Ernest Farino (THE TERMINATOR, GALAXY OF TERROR, STEEL AND LACE)

    We continue #SciFiJuly: An Infinity of Titles with a giant interview with director and visual effects supervisor Ernest Farino! From an early age, Ernest was fascinated by special effects and his love for filmmaking would take him from creating the stop-motion creature in 1978's THE ALIEN FACTOR to Los Angeles and working for Roger Corman at the Venice Lumberyard studio on films like GALAXY OF TERROR and beyond! There, he would meet James Cameron and would work on films like THE TERMINATOR and THE ABYSS! We walk through Ernest's career, which included working on John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE THING as well as doing effects and main title sequences for a variety of New World Pictures films from the Corman era to the next ownership group! We discuss the difficulty of bats in SATURDAY THE 14TH and Sybil Danning's costume in the TV edit of BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, the tricky ending of DEATHSTALKER, having lots of time and no time to work on the title sequences for GODZILLA 1985 and PRETTY SMART, and how Ernest's work on TAG: THE ASSASSINATION GAME may have played a key role in casting for THE TERMINATOR! Also, Ernest explains how he dealt with Arnold Schwarzenegger's biggest, erm, muscle, and how he was able to get away with saying "no" to James Cameron! Ernest provided us with tons of stories, including about his directorial feature debut, STEEL AND LACE, which NWPPVIPs know is a film we love!     Nearly New World: Star Slammer

    Sci-fi July: An Infinity of Titles keeps on rolling with 1986's STAR SLAMMER aka PRISON SHIP aka STAR SLAMMER: PRISON SHIP aka THE ADVENTURES OF TAURA: PRISON SHIP STAR SLAMMER.  Directed Fred Olen Ray, STAR SLAMMER (aka PRISON SHIP aka... you get it) blends comedy with sword and sandal movies, women in prison movies, sci-fi movies and girls just want to have fun movies into a taught hour and 26 minutes.   STAR SLAMMER stars Sandy Brook (They Call Me Bruce?) as Taura who is wrongly confined to a prison ship aka STAR SLAMMER (not again). In reality, STAR SLAMMER is little more than a prison-style all-inclusive resort where instead of sitting by the pool, you get pushed around by intimidating staff.  You get free food, alcohol, impromptu dance clubs and, the most coveted of experiences, solitary confinement. We get deep in this episode.  Erica asks the question everyone has been asking, "what is the purpose of a thong in space?" We discuss the effects of space travel on perms including whether the bends also have an effect. We discuss the best, bad-ass prison nicknames like "Sleep Apnea Bitch".  And we even spend some time talking about Radiohead.  Did you know they're big deep sea divers?  You will after listening to this episode.    Ultimately, STAR SLAMMER should be a must-eat menu item from Denny's.  You hear that, Denny's?  This is a free idea you should consider.     Ep. 177: The Aurora Encounter featuring James Kirkland

    Sci-fi July: An Infinity of Titles has landed! Listeners Sci-fi July is going to out of this world this month starting with a banger 1986's sci-fi western, THE AURORA ENCOUNTER. We are joined this week by special guest James Kirkland making his NWPP debut. James is a comedian, actor, author of the The Bill Walton Mysteries series of books, and you may have seen or heard his work on his podcast: MicroDrama Doses, where he and his co-host watch and review vertical films. Directed by Jim McCullough Sr. and starring Jack Elam as Charlie, a washed up actor and blatant checkers cheater and Peter Brown as Sheriff, the hunky boyfriend and (surprise) town sheriff. THe AURORA ENCOUNTER set in 1897 follows the residents of Aurora, Texas who are visited by an extraterrestrial being whose presence divides the community, and also brings them all together. Awwwww....what could go wrong?! Join us as we learn about Marc's long musical history with this film, Ryan's long history with Weekly World News and his fashion industry ties to Bat Boy.     Interview Part 2 with director Fritz Kiersch (TUFF TURF, CHILDREN OF THE CORN)

    A bucket list guest, director Fritz Kiersch, returns with the second half of our conversation that covers his move from the commercial world to the New World (ahem) of features starting with 1984's CHILDREN OF THE CORN and continuing with 1985's TUFF TURF as Fritz continued to deliver success after success for New World Pictures.  And because the movies Fritz directed were so well received, he was one of the few directors to get a three picture deal, which would eventually end with 1989's UNDER THE BOARDWALK (and, in our eyes, should have included 1987's WINNERS TAKE ALL).  We put CHILDREN OF THE CORN and TUFF TURF under the microscope and talk about the production of each, including casting, script changes, building a soundtrack, French New Wave, and what happened to the Cornmobile! As you will recall from the first part of our conversation with Fritz, he is as quick-witted and sharp as ever, so you don't want to miss this look back at two classic New World films.  Again, we cannot thank Fritz enough for sitting down with us for such an extended discussion of his career!     Ep. 175: Nashville Girl featuring Tommy Bechtold

    June Gloom 2: Down to Frown is upon us dear listeners, and things are dark. Lucky for you, and us, we are joined this week by special guest and NWPPVIP Tommy Bechtold! Tommy is a comedian, and actor, and if you have been fortunate enough to see Tommy perform stand up or listened to our episodes on DEF-CON 4, BEVERLY HILLS VAMP, TRIAL OF THE INCREDIBLE HULK, you know he is hilarious. Truly a ray of sunshine in this otherwise gloomy month. In this episode we head down South to talk about 1976's NASHVILLE GIRL. Directed by Gus Trikonis (THE EVIL), this 1970's hicksploitation film follows a 16-year-old runaway, played by Monica Gayle (SWITCHBLADE SISTERS), as she makes her way to the big city of Nashville (spoiler in the title!) to pursue a career in the music industry as a county singer.  In this episode,  we laugh, we cry, we ask whyyyyyy would anyone not listen to us explore diners, fashion, and the highly questionable choices of the 70s when newspapers were the gateway to all our dreams.     Ep. 174: Richard's Things

    June Gloom 2: Down to Frown is officially underway, and we are kicking it off with the 1980 British drama RICHARD'S THINGS, starring Liv Ullmann and Amanda Redman. RICHARD'S THINGS is the story of Kate, a woman whose husband Richard has the decency to die before the movie even really gets going, leaving behind his things — and, as Kate slowly pieces together, his mistress. What follows is a methodical, quivering-lipped journey through grief, betrayal, and the unlikely friendship that blooms between a widow and her late husband's younger lover, Josie. United by their mutual loss, mutual exasperation, and a shared appreciation for lighting a cigarette without ever actually smoking it, the two women navigate the emotional wreckage of loving the same deeply average man. There's so much to uncover in RICHARD'S THINGS.  And by uncover, we don't mean nudity.  There's not much of that.  But there are omelets. There are hugs — intense, hard-R hugs. There is a burglar in slacks.  There are disgruntled in-laws. And eventually, there is a road-side breakup that may be the most efficient ending of a relationship in cinema history.  We discuss the film's notoriously deliberate pacing — which is to say, every line of dialogue arrives as though it has traveled a great distance and needs a moment to rest. We gush over the film's undisputed highlight: a gloriously civil home burglary committed by a man in a sport coat who would go on to play Emperor Palpatine in the STAR WARS franchise.     Just as soon as it began, Marc's Miserable Marvelous May 4: EVER! has come to a close, but not before we do battle in a - shhhhh! - "secret" war with SPIDER-MAN: SECRET WARS! Stitched together with five episode of the Spider-Man Animated Series and released on home video, SECRET WARS sees Spidey go up against The Beyonder and Madame Web in a test to see if good can triumph over evil! Why did The Beyonder have to transport Spider-Man and other heroes onto a distant planet to watch that when they seem to do it on the regular on Earth? Who knows! All we know is there are some rules and also not some rules. Joining us in the adventure is Karen Graci, a writer and producer for My Adventures with Superman (check out Season 3 on HBO MAX and/or Adult Swim) and the Head Writer and Producer of the upcoming series My Adventures with Green Lantern! We discuss why Madame Web represents life goals, why it sucks to be pulled into an interdimensional battle when you're in the middle of something, and how easy it is to ruin an entire planet's existence!
