#3 Racing Undiagnosed to Racing 100% in Range | Ollie’s Type 1 Story

Two years ago, Ollie ran a parkrun six or seven minutes slower than normal and felt like her body had stopped moving forward. A few days later she was in a walk-in centre with a Lucozade in her hand, about to find out she had type 1 diabetes. Since then she’s raced sprint triathlons and three 70.3s. On her first 70.3 she had no plan, her CGM failed, and she crossed the line on 22 mmol. When she went back to the same race, she took on around 300g of carbs and stayed 100% in range from start to finish. In this episode, Ollie talks openly about what changed in between: what she learned from coaching, the variables she finally got to grips with, and why she hated the pump for the first month before deciding she’d never go back to pens. In this episode: Ollie’s diagnosis story, and why she kept running straight afterWhy she was more scared of stopping for a low mid-race than of running highHer first 70.3, racing blind and finishing on 22 mmolSwitching from pens to a pump: “I hate the pump, I want to go back to pens”Her go-to basal reductions and fuelling for easy sessions, hard sessions and morning sessionsWhy she feels like “a different diabetic in the morning and the afternoon”Her 70.3 rematch: 300g of carbs and 100% in rangeHow sharing the bad days on Instagram has helped her and hundreds of other type 1sHer one piece of advice for any type 1 doing endurance sport If you’re a type 1 who races on guesswork, is scared of lows, or is thinking about switching to a pump, this one’s for you.
