Ep. 349- Hunt Smarter With Racklog

There’s no shortage of hunting apps out there today. We’ve got mapping apps, weather apps, trail camera apps, and about a dozen different ways to drop a pin on a map. But what happens when you start bringing all of that information together and actually use it to help make better hunting decisions? This week, I sat down with Matthew Olson, the creator of RackLog, a whitetail-focused hunting app built around helping hunters better understand the information they’re already collecting in the woods. Matthew and I talk about where the idea for RackLog came from, what separates it from some of the bigger hunting apps already on the market, and some of the tools they’ve built into it—including Buck Brain, RackScan, trail camera management, target buck tracking, and the ability to factor things like habitat, wind, thermals, weather, and your own hunting history into the decision-making process. We also get into Matthew’s story of building an app from the ground up while serving Active Duty in the Army, some of the lessons he’s learned since launching RackLog, and where he hopes to take the platform in the future. And if you want to check RackLog out for yourself, Matthew hooked up the Under Pressure Outdoors community with a couple of promo codes. Use UPO30 for a monthly subscription or UPO30YEAR for a yearly subscription, and you’ll get one month of RackLog Premium access free. So whether you’re managing a piece of private ground, grinding it out on public land, or you’re just looking for a better way to organize all the information you collect throughout deer season, this is a good one. UPO Live On AIr Ep.79- The Death Of The Hunting Camp

There was a time when hunting season didn’t just mean opening morning. It meant hunting camp. It meant an old camper, a little cabin, or maybe just a wall tent somewhere back in the woods. It meant a pot of coffee that had been sitting on the stove way too long, somebody telling the same story you’d already heard a hundred times, wet boots drying by the fire, and a group of people sitting around at the end of the day arguing about where the deer went. And somewhere along the way, it feels like we’ve started losing that. Hunting has changed. We’ve got better gear, better information, better technology, and probably more ways than ever to become successful in the woods. But as hunting has become more efficient, more individual, and more focused on the outcome, I wonder if we’ve sacrificed some of the things that made hunting special in the first place. Because hunting camp was never really about the camp. It was where kids learned from their dads and granddads. Where friendships were built. Where stories became traditions, and traditions got handed down to the next generation. Half the memories we carry from hunting season didn’t happen in a tree stand at all—they happened back at camp. So tonight, we’re talking about the death of the hunting camp—why it seems to be disappearing, what we might be losing along with it, and whether there’s still time for our generation to keep that tradition alive. Ep. 346- Follow The Science? Or Follow The Money? with Andy Braddock

Florida’s lakes and waterways are some of the most valuable natural resources we have, but the way we’re managing them deserves a much closer look. This week, I sat down with Andy Braddock to talk about submersed aquatic vegetation management in Florida—and once you start digging into how this system works, some pretty uncomfortable questions start coming up. We’re spraying aquatic vegetation in the name of managing and protecting our waterways, but what happens after those plants die? That vegetation doesn’t simply disappear. It decomposes, nutrients are released back into the water, clarity can suffer, and native vegetation that depends on sunlight suddenly has an even tougher environment to grow in. Then there’s the money. Who is paying for the research used to justify these management practices? Who benefits from the conclusions? Who sells the chemicals being applied year after year? And how much of the science guiding these decisions is truly independent? Those are serious questions, and asking them doesn’t mean we’ve already decided what the answers are. Andy and I dig into the nutrient loads associated with vegetation treatment and decomposition, declining water clarity, the struggle to reestablish native submerged vegetation, and whether our current approach is actually addressing the underlying problems—or helping create a cycle that requires even more intervention. Florida spends a lot of money managing these waterways. If the result is healthier lakes, healthier fisheries, and thriving native vegetation, great. But if the water keeps getting cloudier, native vegetation keeps struggling, and we keep reaching for another round of chemicals, at some point we have to ask a pretty simple question: Are we actually fixing the problem—or are we paying to perpetuate it?
