    Headlines: RBA raises cash rate to 4.85%

    Today's headlines include:  The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised the official cash rate to 4.85% - the highest level since 2008. Socceroos and Matildas players have launched legal action against Football Australia (FA) as part of a multi-million dollar dispute between the governing body and its national teams. The U.S. military has conducted strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, on the eve of the midterm elections. And today’s good news: NASA has confirmed the discovery of one of the oldest Martian meteorites ever found on Earth, providing a “rare snapshot” of Mars’ formation.     Why eating disorders are on the rise

    More than 18 million people around the world are living with anorexia or bulimia, with adolescents and young adults disproportionately affected. That’s according to a major new global study. It’s the biggest update on these two eating disorders in almost a decade, covering more than 200 countries and three decades of data. The findings, from what’s known as the Global Burden of Disease study, show Australia has the highest rate of anorexia and bulimia compared to any other country, and - as you’re about to hear - the picture could be even worse than we realise. To understand the whole story, I spoke with one of the senior researchers behind the study, Associate Professor Damian Santomauro from the University of Queensland’s School of Public Health for today’s deep dive. Days out from the U.S. midterms, a Democrat in the state of Michigan has formally endorsed a Republican candidate for the Senate. Bruce Lehrmann is set to stand trial for rape next year.     Why are all my friends unemployed?

    This is the story of thousands of uni students. They were promised that if they pulled all-nighters, did the internships and put in the extra hours, there’d be a job waiting at the end. But for many young Australians, the graduation gown came off, and the job never came. Last month, the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed youth unemployment has climbed to 11.1%, the highest it’s been since 2021, when we were grappling with the pandemic. On today’s podcast, we’re going to unpack why young people are being hit so much harder when it comes to unemployment, why it’s not just you struggling to land a job, and how it’s part of a much bigger shift in the job market.     Headlines: Erin Patterson loses appeal

    Today's headlines include:  Erin Patterson has lost her appeal against her murder convictions and instead been re-sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility of parole. A man could spend life behind bars after allegedly seeking out military and explosives information in preparation for a terrorist attack. Hong Kong leader John Lee has apologised for last year’s deadly apartment tower blaze that killed 168 people in the city’s northern Tai Po district. And today’s good news: A surgeon has removed a man’s cancerous prostate while sitting in a different hospital, in the first known robotic telesurgery between two U.S. locations.
