#271 - Above the Law (1988): Scene by Scene Riff

Nico Toscani is a Chicago cop with a mysterious CIA past, a ponytail in progress, and a serious allergy to anyone thinking they're above the law — especially when that includes corrupt feds, mobsters, and a certain knife-wielding villain with a face that looks borrowed. Steven Seagal's debut vehicle mixes gritty cop drama, over-the-top action, and enough plot twists to make you wonder if the script was written by committee… or butter injections. In this week's episode, James, Dave, Bob, and Mel dive scene-by-scene into Seagal's first big swing. They break down the wild Vietnam backstory, the legendary car hood ride, the church bombing, bodega brawls, and that unforgettable "keep the change, you filthy animal" cameo. Expect plenty of laughs at the hair, the flips, the running form, the shoe throw, and whether this is peak early Seagal or the beginning of the end. They also hand out the awards (including a rare tie for the Will Patton), debate if this is a "bad movie that rules" or just straight-up bad, and wonder what Arnold or Kurt Russell could've done with the same material. Plus: Pam Grier in the car, Sharon Stone with random babies, and why this movie feels like three different films fighting for dominance. From Russia With Love (1963) - Die Another Episode PREVIEW

This is an extended sample from our new James Bond show, Die Another Episode, and we can't wait to talk through every James Bond movie! Want the whole thing? Click the link below to become a Patreon supporter! https://www.patreon.com/badmoviesrule James and Chuck dive into the second Bond film — the one that truly made 007 a global phenomenon — while a massive thunderstorm tries to wash them (and the new studio) off the map. Soaked shorts, bare feet on the third floor during a tornado watch, thunder on cue, and zero shoes? They break down the bigger budget, exotic locations, and the squad that returned from Dr. No (same director, same writers, even more grand scale). Robert Shaw as the chilling Grant, Lotte Lenya’s brass-knuckled Rosa Klebb, a very young Daniela Bianchi as Tatiana, the debut of Q and his briefcase of wonders, gypsy camp chaos, that legendary train fight, helicopter mayhem, boat chases, and all the tropes this movie cemented for the franchise. Expect plenty of tangents: leg doubles, poison shoes, Spectre’s loudspeaker addiction, chess tournament stress, and whether red wine really does go with fish. Plus heartfelt chat about why this one still hits so hard. If you love the riffs, the breakdowns, and surviving natural disasters just to talk Bond with the boys, this one’s a blast. Grab your martini (shaken, not stirred) and join us! Thanks for supporting the show — your patronage keeps the lights on (and the rain off our shorts). What did you think of From Russia with Love?
