Zeus Was an Atheist with Jonathan Lyonhart

What if Moses wrestled with questions about truth, morality, beauty, and the existence of God? Jonathan Lyonhart joins me on the podcast to discuss his imaginative new book, Zeus Was an Atheist. Combining biblical storytelling, philosophy, mythology, humor, and apologetics, Lyonhart presents Moses as a seeker confronting some of humanity's deepest questions. Along the way, readers encounter Egyptian gods, Greek mythology, cosmic battles, and thought-provoking conversations about reality itself. This unique genre-blending work invites believers and skeptics alike to think more deeply about faith, doubt, and the God who revealed himself to Moses at Sinai. Balancing Autonomy and Unity: Looking Ahead to the GMC General Conference with Matt O'Reilly

In this episode of More to the Story, I welcome Dr. Matt O’Reilly (Lead Pastor of Christ Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and Director of Research at Wesley Biblical Seminary) for a timely conversation about the upcoming Global Methodist Church General Conference. The gathering will take place August 30–September 5, 2026, in Johannesburg, South Africa. We discuss the major issues expected to arise at this historic meeting, with particular focus on one of the most important questions facing the young denomination: how GMC polity will find a healthy balance between local church autonomy and connectional unity. Join the conversation as Matt and I explore what it will take for the Global Methodist Church to remain both faithfully Wesleyan and truly global. Living into the Episcopacy with Chris Ritter

In this episode, I sit down with Rev. Dr. Chris Ritter, chair of the Global Methodist Church’s Global Episcopacy Committee, to explore the next chapter for bishops in the GMC. For the first time, the church will elect a regular slate of full-time bishops at its 2026 General Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa (August 30–September 5). Ritter walks us through the carefully designed process: annual conference delegations nominate candidates, eight international episcopal areas are formed, Area Committees on Episcopacy interview and rank nominees, and the full General Conference elects one bishop per area by a 60% threshold. These bishops will serve six-year terms as general superintendents—globally focused, term-limited servant leaders charged with guarding, teaching, and proclaiming the apostolic faith from a Wesleyan perspective. We discuss the shift from interim and part-time leadership to a more stable, full-time episcopacy, the theological and practical reasons behind restoring election to General Conference, and what this means for the church’s mission to make disciples and spread scriptural holiness across the globe. A clear, hopeful conversation about accountable leadership in a global Methodist movement. Was John Wesley an Inerrantist? with Mark Olson

Did John Wesley believe the Bible is without error? Some argue that calling Wesley a supporter of biblical inerrancy is anachronistic because the term developed after his lifetime. In this episode of More to the Story, Dr. Mark Olson joins me to tackle this important historical and theological question. Together, we explore how historians approach questions about historical figures and ideas, examining the difference between imposing modern categories on the past and identifying continuity in theological convictions. Olson argues that while Wesley did not use the language of contemporary inerrancy debates, the substance of his view of Scripture clearly reflects a belief that the Bible is free from error. The conversation highlights Wesley’s writings, his understanding of divine inspiration, and the methods historians use to assess theological claims across centuries. Whether you are interested in Wesley studies, biblical authority, or historical theology, this episode offers a thoughtful and engaging discussion.
