    400 // I Never Expected THIS When I Started a Decorating Podcast

Five years ago, I sat down behind a microphone, pressed record, and hoped someone would listen. I never imagined that one day I'd be celebrating 400 episodes. And I certainly never expected the lessons that would emerge along the way. When I started this podcast, I thought I was teaching decorating. How to choose paint colors. How to style bookshelves. How to make a room feel finished. How to create a home you love without spending a fortune. But after 400 episodes and thousands of conversations with listeners just like you, I've realized something surprising: Decorating was never really about decorating. It's about confidence. It's about creating a home that reflects who you are. It's about learning to trust yourself. It's about making progress instead of waiting for perfection. And it's about discovering that the home you've always wanted is often much closer than you think. In this special 400th episode, I'm reflecting on the journey, sharing some of the biggest lessons I've learned over the past five years, and celebrating the incredible community that has grown around this show. Whether you've been listening since Episode 1 or you just found the podcast last week, I'm so grateful you're here. In This Episode: How this podcast started (and what I thought it would become) The surprising lesson I never expected to learn What 400 episodes have taught me about decorating and confidence A special invitation to join the 400th episode celebration Thank You To every listener who has downloaded an episode, left a review, shared the show with a friend, sent a message, joined The Collective, booked a call, or simply invited me into your earbuds while folding laundry, walking the dog, or tackling a project at home... Thank you. This milestone belongs to all of us. Join the Celebration: https://figandfarmathome.myflodesk.com/400  We're celebrating 400 episodes all week long with giveaways, surprises, bonus opportunities, and plenty of fun. 399 // 5 Stores, Countless Finds: My Budget Decor Shopping List

🌟🌟 ARE YOU CELEBRATING WITH US NEXT WEEK?!?!?!?! 🌟🌟 Join the 400th episode / 5 year celebration at: https://figandfarmathome.myflodesk.com/400    As we count down to Episode 400, I'm sharing one of the questions I get asked most often: "Where do you shop for affordable home decor?" The truth is, creating a beautiful home doesn't require a designer budget. It does require knowing where to shop, what to look for, and how to mix pieces from different sources to create a home that feels collected rather than cookie-cutter. In this episode, I'm counting down my five favorite places to shop for home decor on a budget and sharing exactly what I buy from each one. In this episode: #5: IKEA More than just furniture! I'm sharing my favorite IKEA staples, including pillow forms, curtains, frames, plants, candles, kitchen storage, and the white dinner plates that serve as the foundation for nearly all of my tablescapes. #4: Target One of my favorite sources for throw pillows, blankets, and bath towels. You'll hear my favorite shopping strategy: finding inspiration from higher-end retailers and then looking for similar styles at a more approachable price point. #3: HomeGoods The perfect place for unique finds that aren't showing up in every home. I'm always on the hunt for picture frames, artwork, candles, and those unexpected treasures that make a home feel personal. #2: Etsy When I want artwork, handmade decor, custom pillow covers, or beautiful curtains, Etsy is my go-to. Yes, handmade pieces often cost more, but they bring character, craftsmanship, and uniqueness that mass-produced decor simply can't replicate. #1: Thrifting My absolute favorite way to decorate on a budget. Thrifting is where curated homes are built—but only if you know what you're looking for. I'll share why understanding your aesthetic is the key to successful thrifting and how it can save you from frustration while helping you create a home that looks collected over time. // Links mentioned in show: // Become a Design Bestie by joining the newsletter: https://bit.ly/designbestie Email: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Book a Decorating SOS Coaching Call: https://www.figandfarmathome.com/decorating-sos Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group

398 // Why most builder-grade homes feel cold, generic and a bit boring (and how to fix it) | 5 Minute Fix

New builds are supposed to feel exciting…so why do so many builder-grade homes feel a little cold, flat, or even generic once you move in? In today’s Five Minute Fix, we’re talking about one of the most common frustrations I see: loving your home on paper, but struggling to make it feel personal, warm, and custom once you’re actually living in it. Because here’s the truth: It’s not that your home is “bad.” And it’s not that you need a full renovation. Most builder-grade homes are designed to be safe, neutral, and broadly appealing—which often means they come without the layers, contrast, and character that make a space feel truly finished. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why builder-grade homes often feel cold or generic (even when beautifully decorated) The biggest mistake people make when trying to “fix” a new build feel Why adding more decor usually doesn’t solve the problem Simple, high-impact ways to add character and personality without renovating How layering, contrast, and intentional choices create a custom feel over time This is one of those shifts that changes everything—not because you’re starting over, but because you finally understand how to see your home differently. And if you’ve ever looked around and thought, “I don’t hate my home…I just wish it felt more like me,” this episode will give you a completely new perspective. Ready to go beyond quick fixes? Inside The Collective, I teach you how to layer, style, and pull your home together so it feels cohesive, intentional, and deeply personal—without guessing, overbuying, or starting from scratch. 397 // The difference between a decorated room and a designer room (and the secret to doing it in your home)

The Difference Between a Decorated Room and a Designer Room Ever wonder why a room can have all the "right" furniture and decor but still feel unfinished? More often than not, the answer comes down to styling. In today's episode, I'm sharing the exact process I use to style coffee tables, consoles, dressers, shelves, kitchen counters, nightstands, and other flat surfaces so they look intentional rather than cluttered. Because here's the thing: styling isn't about adding more stuff. It's about creating visual interest, balance, and cohesion so your home feels thoughtfully designed. You'll learn how to: Determine the purpose of a flat surface before styling it Edit and curate decor so your styling doesn't become clutter Choose an anchor piece that grounds the entire vignette Use layering to create depth and visual interest Incorporate texture for a more collected, designer look Vary heights to keep your styling from feeling flat Repeat design elements throughout the room for cohesion Add the finishing touch that works in every decorating style If you've ever struggled with coffee table styling, shelf styling, console table decor, or simply making your home feel more polished, this episode will give you a practical framework you can use in any room of your home. HINT: This episode is directly tied to our 5th year/400th episode celebration, so be sure to give it a try on any flat surface in your home.  Want to see visuals and practice with guidance: Join The Collective  Want to have someone style your shelves with you real-time: Book a Decorating SOS Call   // Links mentioned in show: // Become a Design Bestie by joining the newsletter: https://bit.ly/designbestie Email: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Book a Decorating SOS Coaching Call: https://www.figandfarmathome.com/decorating-sos Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group

Or your decor just doesn’t have that elevated, designer look you’re craving. In today’s Five Minute Fix, we’re talking about one of the biggest reasons homes feel visually chaotic—and the simple styling shift that can instantly make your home look more sophisticated without buying a single new thing. Because here’s the truth: Luxury isn’t about having more. It’s about intentionality. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why too many small decor pieces create visual clutter The hidden reason expensive-looking homes often feel calmer and simpler The “breathing room” trick designers use to make rooms feel elevated How scale changes the entire feel of a room A simple editing exercise you can do in five minutes using what you already own This is one of those small shifts that creates a huge visual impact—helping your home feel calmer, more intentional, and more high-end without spending more money. 394 // Why your furniture layout feels awkward (and how to fix it hast) | 5 Minute Fix

Your furniture might not be the problem. It might just be where it’s sitting. In today’s Five Minute Fix, we’re talking about one of the biggest layout mistakes I see in homes all the time: furniture that feels awkward, disconnected, or “off” in the room…even when the pieces themselves are beautiful. Because here’s what most people do: They push every piece against the walls hoping the room will feel bigger. But instead? The room often ends up feeling cold, disconnected, and surprisingly harder to use. In today’s episode, you’ll learn: Why floating furniture away from the walls can actually make a room feel larger and cozier The hidden reason your seating arrangement may feel uncomfortable or awkward What designers mean by “conversation zones” and why they matter A simple furniture shift you can try in five minutes that changes the entire feel of a room How rugs help anchor furniture and create connection between pieces Why rooms need “pathways” instead of just empty space One of the biggest mindset shifts in decorating is realizing: Open space alone does not create good flow. Connection does. When furniture is too spread out, every piece starts feeling isolated instead of intentional. But when pieces are pulled together thoughtfully, your room immediately starts feeling warmer, more conversational, and more inviting. And friend…this is one of those fixes that costs absolutely nothing to try. Ready to go beyond quick fixes? Inside The Collective, I help you figure out layouts, scale, styling, flow, and all the little details that make a home finally feel pulled together—without second-guessing every decision.
