Book 101 Review, in its fifth season, features Susan Michel—spiritual speaker and author of Surrender to Joy—as a guest, sharing a powerful message of healing, resilience, and the journey toward inner peace and serenity.

Susan Michel Spiritual Speaker, Author, Surrender to Joy: From Suicide to Serenity, 2 time suicide survivor When I was 20 years old, I tried to end my life twice. With 6 bottles of sleeping pills inside of me, as my mother drove me to the hospital, I realized I didn’t really want to die, I just wanted to kill the pain. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. I understand what their desperation feels like. What helped me was facing my pain and developing a spiritual practice based on A Course in Miracles. I’m Susan Michel, Author, Suicide Prevention Advocate, and 2-time suicide survivor. My book, Surrender to Joy: From Suicide to Serenity is about becoming aware of our unhealed pain so healing can occur. Our natural state is one of peace, love, joy, and happiness. However, in order to attain this state consistently, we need to become aware of the blocks to love that we have unconsciously created. As a young woman, I felt abandoned and betrayed by my dad and everyone else in my life. When I denied my unhealed pain, my uncomfortable feelings exacerbated. When I owned my pain, I began to heal. My joy was on the other side of all that pain. I found that the keys to true transformation are forgiveness and gratitude. My mission is to help others identify and process emotional pain so transformation can occur and they can grow and open up to their innate brilliance. Book 101 Review, now in its fifth season, features MegAnne Ford as our guest—a passionate parenting coach dedicated to helping parents build deeper, more meaningful connections with their children. In this engaging conversation, MegAnne shares practic

MegAnne Ford Parent Coach A Mission to Help Families Thrive. I won’t stand by and watch parents struggle, and children suffer. I didn’t grow up in a home where connection was at the forefront of parenting. As a child, I was labeled a “problem,” often seen as loud, strong-willed, and difficult. My parents tried their best but relied on shame, blame, and punishment, which only created distance between us. I was left feeling misunderstood, and that led to rebellion and resentment. After entering early childhood education, I saw these same outdated tools still being used on children, resulting in resistance instead of learning. I realized I was using those same methods with my students, which sparked a desire for change. I set out to discover a better way for both parents and children. I dove deep into the work of attachment theory by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, as well as Dr. Daniel Siegel’s insights into brain development. Through my own journey of self-healing, I was able to forgive my mom for the pain I’d carried. I was empowered by this work and knew it was time to change how parents interact with their children. As I began working with parents, they asked, “How did you get them to do that?” A pivotal moment came when I helped a child struggling to leave the classroom. The change in the child’s behavior was immediate. Soon, parents kept asking the same question, which led me to reflect on the approach I was using. Through this reflection, I developed the C.L.E.A.R. Method—a system rooted in connection and communication, not control. This method isn’t about magic, it’s about thoughtful, consistent approaches to parenting that foster understanding and growth. Through the C.L.E.A.R. Method, parents like Cyndi stopped yelling and learned how to have conversations with their children, turning tense moments into opportunities for growth. Steph, who had been stuck in a cycle of permissiveness, became empowered, noticing her daughter’s willingness to listen without resistance. Dani, who was caught between being too firm or too soft, found balance and mutual respect in her relationship with her strong-willed son. But transformation isn’t always easy. Many parents, like Bridget, come to me after trying quick fixes from social media or parenting books, only to feel frustrated when those tips don’t bring lasting results. Bridget had been following positive parenting advice for years, but still struggled with her son’s outbursts. It wasn’t until she invested time in my courses and started practicing the foundational principles of the C.L.E.A.R. Method that things began to change. She shifted from reacting to responding, gaining confidence in her ability to manage situations calmly and consistently. Parents often come to me feeling overwhelmed, unsure of how to break free from ineffective cycles. They worry they are too permissive, fearing they’re losing control, or too strict, worried they’ll crush their child’s spirit. I’m here to help them navigate those concerns, offering a supportive space for parents to grow and learn.
