    Fatphobia and Diet Culture

Genevieve's Resources: Important Terms Regarding this Conversation: Fatphobia Typically defined as “the fear of fatness”.  This also encompasses the systemic oppression an anti-fat bias that many people experience culturally. Here is a super interesting article about how fatphobia as a term also doesn’t full encompass the issue. Sizeism The discrimination or prejudice directed against people because of their size and especially because of their weight. Body Policing The informal practice of policing one's physical appearance because it does not conform to social norms Books: Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls: A Handbook For Unapologetic Living by Jes Baker Fearing The Black Body: The Racial Origins Of Fat Phobia by Sabrina Strings You Have The Right To Remain Fat by Virgie Tovar Health at Every Size by Linda Bacon The Body Is Not An Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor Big Girl by Kelsey Miller Other F Word: A Celebration of the Fat & Fierce  Essays, Journals, Blogs:  Everything you Know About Obesity is Wrong Your Fat Friend  Melissa A. Relationships, Break-Ups & Letting Go

This week, Emily sat down with her good friend, Sydney Sperling. Over the years, Emily and Sydney have connected over their similar experiences with relationships, break up and pain. Emily finally shares her experience with her recent breakup and how she has been able to do some self reflection and become the person she wants to be in or out of a romantic relationship. Sydney and Emily then dive into the concept of toxic relationships vs. toxic breakups and how one is not much different than the other. The beautiful thing about their friendship is they have full transparency with each other and aren't afraid to check each other when they may be making excuses and not being the best version of yourself. We truly believe that's what friends are for; holding each other accountable and helping them to be their best self. We rehash some of the hardships we've dealt with in past relationships and the warning signs/red flags that we may not have seen in the moment, but can recognize now.  Some of my favorite quotes from this episode:  "It's like sex and pizza." "I tend to put a lot more energy into a relationship than into myself." "Let's meet up on Thursday." "If you don't know where to start, start with Google." "This person chose me everyday and then one day they decided to stop choosing me." "I think once you're told something for so long, you start to believe it."
