Ep. 34: The Hauntings of Poinsett Bridge, Female Ghosts of The Unitarian Church Graveyard, and "The Miner"

Hidden away in the woods of northern Greenville County stands Poinsett Bridge, a stone Gothic bridge built nearly two centuries ago. During the day, it’s a piece of South Carolina history. But when the sun goes down, the stories begin. Strange lights moving through the woods. Voices and screams with no obvious source. Shadowy figures. And legends claim that those who died during the bridge’s construction may still remain there. Some stories say the land itself was already sacred. Others say the dead were buried within the bridge. And some people who have visited after dark swear they experienced something they simply can’t explain. In this episode, we’re heading into the woods of the Upstate... to Poinsett Bridge. Because when the stories have been passed down for generations, the question isn’t just “Is this place haunted?” The question is… “What exactly is still there?” Plus, we'll meet the female ghosts of Charleston’s Unitarian Church Cemetery.  Also, I'll read a short story about two sisters who take the life of a miner in order to steal his gold. And just when they thought they were in the clear, he returned. And this time, he wasn't looking for his stolen gold. Stay awake. Stay caffeinated. Ep. 33: The Disappearance of Michael Akey, Ridgeville Whale Bones, & Ghost Island

June 24th, 1972. Fourteen-year-old Michael Steven Akey was near Burton, South Carolina when he got into a car. And then he disappeared. For nearly six years, there was no answer. No goodbye. No explanation. Then on a quiet stretch of Lady’s Island, human remains were discovered. Decades would pass. Technology would change. And eventually, science would put a name to those remains…Michael Akey. But identifying Michael was only the beginning because the person who drove away with him was never identified. Also, scientists uncovered the fossilized bones of a whale that lived here roughly 24 million years ago near Ridgeville. What was a whale doing in South Carolina? Plus, out on the dark waters of Lake Hartwell sits a tiny piece of land with a chilling history. A forgotten cemetery surrounded by water and a place locals have come to call Ghost Island. But are the stories of spirits here just legends or is something still lingering among those graves?
