052 - PBJ Reporting for Nursing Homes: Staffing Data and Star Ratings

PBJ may sound like lunch, but for nursing homes, Payroll-Based Journal reporting can have serious consequences. In this episode, Charles Frizzell explains how PBJ reporting works, why the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services collects daily staffing data, and how inaccurate or incomplete information can affect a facility’s staffing star rating. Charles also talks about some of the most common PBJ reporting problems, including missing contracted staff hours, incorrectly reporting employees who work remotely, and payroll systems that aren’t set up to capture all reportable time. He explains why facilities should review their payroll setup, monitor staffing before the end of the quarter, and use XML uploads when possible rather than relying on time-consuming manual entry. In this episode What Payroll-Based Journal reporting is and why CMS introduced it How PBJ data can affect a nursing home’s staffing star rating Why missing or questionable data can trigger greater scrutiny Common reporting issues involving contracted and remote staff How facilities can compare scheduled staffing with actual hours Why large changes in reported staffing may lead to a PBJ audit The advantages of XML uploads over manual data entry Why overnight shifts make manual reporting especially complicated How more accurate, proactive reporting can help facilities avoid unpleasant surprises And yes, there are a few peanut butter, jelly, and bread jokes. We couldn’t just leave those sitting on the table. Listen in to learn more!

045 - Rural Health Transformation Program Part 1

There’s a recurring theme in every episode we do about healthcare, and it goes something like this: This stuff’s really complicated. (Listen, we didn’t say it was an earth-shattering theme). Anyhoo, the recently created Rural Healthcare Transformation Program is no different. In fact, there are so many moving parts, we had to break this episode into two episodes. Shareholder and CPA Kelly Klein — longtime pod listener, first-time guest — explains how the program came to be, how the funds are being distributed, and what rural healthcare facilities need to know. Whether you’re part of a rural healthcare facility, receive care from one, or like to keep up on the ever-shifting healthcare landscape, there’s something for you. Listen in to learn more!
