    Episode 196: Martin (1977)

    This week Josh and Drusilla discuss a George Romero deep cut but possibly his best film, Martin (1977). From wiki: “Martin (also known internationally as Wampyr) is a 1977[2] American horror film written and directed by George A. Romero, starring John Amplas. The film follows a troubled young man who believes himself to be a vampire.[3] Shot in 1976, Martin was Romero's fifth feature film following his previous film, The Crazies (1973). Romero said that Martin was the favorite of all his films.[4][5] The film is also the first collaboration between George Romero and special effects artist Tom Savini.     Drusilla and Josh discuss Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature. From wiki: “In a Violent Nature is a 2024 Canadian slasher film written and directed by Chris Nash, and starring Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, and Lauren-Marie Taylor. Described as an "ambient slasher",[4][5] it follows a mute killer who is accidentally resurrected from his grave in the Ontario wilderness by a group of teenagers, whom he then begins stalking and murdering.     This week Josh and Drusilla watch the 1940’s banger by Carl Theodor Dreyer, Day of Wrath. From wiki: “Day of Wrath (Danish: Vredens dag) is a 1943 Danish drama film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer and starring Lisbeth Movin, Thorkild Roose and Preben Lerdorff Rye. It is an adaptation of the 1909 play Anne Pedersdotter by Hans Wiers-Jenssen, based on a 16th century Norwegian case. The film tells the story of a young woman who is forced into a marriage with an elderly pastor after her late mother was accused of witchcraft. From, wiki: “Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon, based on a story by O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. It follows a commercial starship crew who investigate a derelict space vessel and are hunted by a deadly extraterrestrial creature. The film stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. It was produced by Gordon Carroll, David Giler, and Walter Hill through their company Brandywine Productions and was distributed by 20th Century-Fox. Giler and Hill revised and made additions to the script; Shusett was the executive producer. The alien creatures and environments were designed by the Swiss artist H. R. Presence premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2024. It was released in U.S. theaters by Neon on January 24, 2025. The film has grossed $11.1 million on a $2 million production budget, and received positive reviews from critics.
