Dear Jane

Scott Baker & Marcie Little

This podcast brings together pro-life leaders and individuals of all stripes to have meaningful conversations about the issue of life. How do we tackle the massive injustice of abortion while keeping the abortion-minded woman at the forefront of our considerations? How do we hold heartbreak, anger, and compassion close to our hearts to minister to everyone impacted by abortion? How do we work with others with whom we differ ideologically on every other issue except the issue of abortion to promote a culture of life? These are just some of the questions we wrestle with on our Dear Jane podcast. The other side only wants to highlight our differences, but we want to talk with people in the movement about what unites us. Dear Jane focuses on the one thing we can all agree on: the sanctity of every human life. Dear Jane will host the hard conversations, ask the tough questions, and acknowledge our differences while always keeping in mind our shared beliefs. Tune in to listen to heartfelt conversations and learn more about what your place in the pro-life movement may be!

If We Can Treat Babies in the Womb, When Do Their Rights Begin?

William Lile, known as the Pro-Life Doc, joins Scott and Marcie to pull back the curtain on what modern fetal medicine can already do inside the womb. Botox. Open-heart surgery. Spina bifida repair. A dangerously fast heartbeat stopped for five seconds and reset. Even identical twins born 87 days apart. These are not abstract possibilities. They raise a more fundamental question: If medicine can diagnose, anesthetize, operate on, and heal a baby before birth, what does that mean for the way we define a patient? That question runs through the entire conversation, especially as Dr. Lile contrasts medicine aimed at treating and healing babies in the womb with training that teaches physicians how to perform late-term abortions and selective reductions. He also recounts the case of a 17-year-old in Louisiana whose father gave her abortion drugs without her knowledge, then explains the Abortion Pill Reversal Network (APRN) training nearly a thousand physicians and nurse practitioners. Dr. Lile and his wife even cover the $109 prescription when a woman seeks reversal. He also turns to the church. Of 120 pastors he addressed, only three said they had received formal instruction on how to speak about abortion alongside healing and forgiveness. Meanwhile, he cites an estimate that 18 to 24 percent of regular churchgoers have been personally involved with an abortion. If medicine can save a baby before birth, what does that say about the rights that baby should have? What Happens When Abortion Grief Stays Buried for Decades?

Infographic: WHAT TOOK 51 YEARS? WHY NAME THE BABY? CAN A NAME HEAL? WHAT STAYED BURIED? WHAT FINALLY SURFACED? Description: What if abortion grief does not surface until years later? Matt Freeman of Rachel’s Vineyard joins Scott and Marcie to talk about abortion healing and the buried, unresolved emotions that can remain long after abortion. Most people do not come to a retreat for four or five years. Some wait decades. The longest gap Matt has seen? 51 years. What can stay hidden for that long? And what finally forces it into the open? The conversation turns to raw grief, anger, self-medication, and long-carried pain that people may live with for years without ever connecting the dots. Then there are the men. The father who felt powerless. The partner who went along with it. The one who pressured her toward it. What are they carrying when they finally walk into a retreat? Matt also explains why some people may come too soon, how men grieving alongside women can change the room, and why the physical aftermath of the abortion pill can become part of the trauma itself. And then comes one of the most intimate and profound parts of the weekend. Each person is invited to give their child a name. For many, it is also the first time they have ever told their abortion story out loud. Why name the baby? And what happens when years of silence finally break? Is Social Media Teaching Us to Empathize With the Wrong Person?

What happens when empathy starts protecting the person who caused the harm? Marcie and Scott confront two stories where sympathy for the adult threatens to overshadow the child at the center. While following the Lindsay Clancy case, Marcie realized something unsettling: she knew Clancy’s name. She could not name her three children. That absence matters. The conversation explores toxic empathy, legal responsibility, and the idea of the “second victim.” At what point does understanding someone’s suffering begin to obscure accountability? Then there is Baby Gabriel. Born through surrogacy with a serious heart condition, Gabriel survived after his surrogate resisted the biological parents’ reported request to end the pregnancy. He has since been returned to their custody by court order, raising difficult questions about surrogacy, disability, parental rights, and what happens when the child adults planned for is not the child they receive. In both stories, attention gravitates toward the adults, their pain, their intentions, their rights, while the children live with the consequences. How far can empathy bend before it starts excusing the inexcusable? What’s Changing Gen Z’s Mind on Abortion?

Gen Z has grown up surrounded by abortion messaging. So why are more young people beginning to question it? And why now? Lydia Taylor Davis, a spokesperson and Social Media Coordinator for Students for Life of America who once identified as pro-choice herself, joins Scott and Marcie to talk about what she is seeing firsthand on college campuses: young men becoming more engaged, young women proving harder to reach, and students reconsidering abortion after encountering arguments they had never heard before. But those conversations come at a cost. Lydia says she wears a bulletproof vest when she speaks on campuses and received threats after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Students for Life considered canceling its speaking tours. They didn’t. She also discusses what the pro-life movement gets wrong when speaking to women, why graphic abortion imagery can backfire, and why social media may be one of the most important battlegrounds left. All of these facts paint a picture and also raise an important question: what actually changes a person's mind about abortion? Watch the full conversation on Dear Jane. Are Abortion Restrictions Really Causing Maternal Deaths?

A waiting period. An ultrasound. A requirement that a physician perform the abortion. A new study grouped measures like these under one category: abortion restrictions and linked states with more restrictions to higher maternal mortality. That sounds alarming. But Dr. Christina Francis, a board-certified OB-GYN and CEO of AAPLOG, raises a basic question: how do these policies actually cause maternal deaths? She joins Scott and Marcie to examine what the headline leaves out. How does requiring an ultrasound increase maternal mortality? Why is giving a woman more time before a major decision treated as a health risk? And why is physician involvement being framed as a restriction? The conversation also turns to abortion-pill complications, including research finding that 83.5% of post-abortion-pill emergency room visits were miscoded as miscarriages and 76% of emergency room visits following the abortion pill were coded as severe. Dr. Francis explains why those findings matter, what could happen as physician-only requirements are removed, and the challenges doctors face when they question the dominant abortion narrative within medicine.
