A TOPGUN Goes to the Merge With TBI, PTS, and Ibogaine | Trey Warren

Send us Fan Mail Trey "Raggot" Warren graduated from TOPGUN and flew in the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Super Hornet as a Naval Flight Officer. He was also, three separate times, suicidal.  In fighter terms he went to the merge with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress, and the fight to get his life back. On No Way Out, Trey tells Brian "Ponch" Rivera how buried post-traumatic stress surfaced after his father's death, how stacked VA prescriptions left him feeling like a zombie, and how he found the way out: ayahuasca, psilocybin, and ibogaine with 5-MeO-DMT at Ambio, guided by fellow Naval Flight Officer Mark "Slider" Keller, the same door Kegan "Smurf" Gill walked through.  A year and a half sober, Trey now teaches, meditates daily, and works as a peer support coach and legislative ambassador for VETS and Americans for Ibogaine. Ponch ties it to John Boyd's OODA loop, orientation, and the flow cycle of struggle, release, and recovery, and to the idea that the real work is the debrief. Trey's message: suicidality does not care what you did in the military, and there is a path through. Veterans Crisis Line, 24/7: dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255. Not medical advice. Ibogaine is Schedule I in the U.S. and is dangerous without cardiac screening and medical supervision. John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. In his own words:  “There is no way out unless we can eliminate the features just cited. Since we don’t know how to do this, we must continue the whirl of reorientation…” A promotional message for Ember Health.  Safe and effective IV ketamine care for individuals seeking relief from depression. Ember Health's evidence-based, partner-oriented, and patient-centered care model, boasting an 84% treatment success rate with 44% of patients reaching depression remission. It also mentions their extensive experience with over 40,000 infusions and treatment of more than 2,500 patients, including veterans, first responders, and individuals with anxiety and PTSD Stay connected with No Way Out and The Whirl Of ReOrientation X: @NoWayOutcast · @PonchAGLX · @NoWayOutMoose Substack: The Whirl Of ReOrientation - www.thewhirl.substack.com

Kegan "SMurf" Gill: Surviving the Navy's Fastest Ejection | OODA Loop

Send us Fan Mail Kegan "Smurf" Gill survived the fastest ejection in U.S. Naval aviation history, punching out of an F/A-18 Super Hornet at roughly 695 mph and 0.95 Mach, two seconds from hitting the Atlantic. In this No Way Out episode, Ponch Rivera and Mark "Moose" McGrath talk with the fighter pilot and author of Phoenix Revival about what came after the crash: traumatic brain injury, the VA system, prescription drug addiction, and the psychedelic assisted therapy and meditation that brought him back. Listeners who discovered Kegan through the Shawn Ryan Show will find the deeper cut here. His story maps directly onto John Boyd's OODA loop: the reflexive ejection that reveals implicit guidance and control, the way institutional systems drive behavior and distort orientation, and the long work of reorientation after trauma. It is a conversation about fighter pilot resilience, veteran mental health, and decision making under uncertainty, built for business leaders, operators, and veterans alike. The Transcendent OODA Loop: Jordan Hall on AI, Strategy & What Makes Us Human

Send us Fan Mail The OODA loop is not a four-step process. Jordan Hall came on to prove it. Co-founder of DivX and Neurohacker Collective, founding voice of Game B, and former Santa Fe Institute trustee, Hall has spent months deep in math, physics, and AI, and he surfaces with a sharp claim: there is a transcendent OODA loop, the strategy that stays optimal and most evolvable across every landscape, and it works as an attractor in strategy space. Whatever sits closest to that peak wins. Ponch takes it from Boyd to active inference to the future of work. Why LLMs are powerful but ungrounded. Why the coherent generalist now beats the specialist. Why big organizations are dissolving into fluid squads. Why AI is the best bullshitter ever built, and why the only skill that matters is the ability to call it. And why, on the far side of the disillusionment, nothing an AI can do was ever essential to being human. Beyond LLMs: Active Inference, the OODA Loop & Universal Natural Intelligence | Michael Polzin

Send us Fan Mail The OODA loop was never about going fast. Michael Polzin, regenerative architect and founding operator of Universal Natural Intelligence, came on to prove it, and to argue that active inference, the math underneath Boyd's orientation, is now buildable as a working intelligence that uses no machine learning at all. Polzin's frame: humans are prediction machines. We forecast before we act, we get surprised when reality disagrees, and we survive by calibrating our signals against the world and each other. He separates true from honest, teaches calibration with tape measures and chopsticks, and tells the story of a single team and process that outlasted twelve years and half a million devices by recalibrating as the world changed. Then he describes agents given a world but no goal, who met broken tools with adaptation instead of panic, and whose behavior can be dialed into anxiety, depression, and intoxication by moving mathematical sliders. Ponch ties it to orientation, to getting inside the OODA loop through genetics, culture, and language rather than speed, and to the show's founding line: attack the system, never the person. Plus the launch of EducateWright and its $25 million anti-violence and active inference pledge. OODA loop, John Boyd, real OODA loop, orientation, active inference, free energy principle, universal natural intelligence, beyond LLMs, decision making under John R. The Real OODA Loop Is Ecological: Optic Flow, Orientation & Constraints | John Flach, PhD

Send us Fan Mail A pilot does not calculate a mid-air collision. He reads it. The horizon sits at your eye height, so an aircraft above it is higher than you and one below it is lower. The target that demands everything is different: the one holding a constant line of sight, fixed in your canopy while it grows. No relative motion, closing range. The optics specify it, no math required. Cognitive systems engineer John Flach returns to No Way Out and pulls that thread from James Gibson and Stick and Rudder all the way to how leaders decide on Wall Street and in elite sport. The information is already out there. In the cockpit the environment hands it to you as optic flow. In business it is real but poorly specified, so the leader's job is to build the optical flow field that does not exist yet. That is ecological interface design, and it is also what a coach does when a drill lets a player see what took experts ten years to notice. Flach and Ponch trace it through Gary Klein and naturalistic decision making, the constraints-led approach, Rasmussen's decision ladder as a non-linear read on the loop, and Flach's own reorientation on John Boyd: once he looked past the caricature, he found Boyd on the same path as Gibson. OODA loop, John Boyd, orientation, optic flow, James Gibson, affordances, Stick and Rudder, constraints-led approach, ecological interface design, naturalistic decision making, Gary Klein, situational awareness, decision making under uncertainty. Constraints-Led Approach, Basketball, and the OODA Loop | George Vaz

Send us Fan Mail George Vaz of Transforming Basketball joins Ponch to explain the Constraints-Led Approach that is reshaping player development from the WNBA's Portland Fire down to the youth level. Alex Sarama, the Fire's head coach and the WNBA's Coach of the Month for May, built his staff and his system around the CLA. George, a co-author of A Constraints-Led Approach to Coaching Basketball, breaks down why the approach is not new, why complicated terminology kept it off the court for decades, and how his team translated ideas like perception-action coupling into basketball language players can use. Ponch maps it all onto familiar ground: John Boyd's OODA loop, mission command, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's flow channel. Together they cover why training should be harder than the game, how rate limiters and the 70/30 challenge point keep every player learning, the shot spectrum of gold, silver, and bronze, the dominoes principles of spacing and quick decisions, and why European coach education keeps producing players who catch up fast. The through line is one every leader in sport, finance, or the military will recognize. Build the environment, let the game do the teaching, and develop your people instead of just collecting them. The America Codes: Apollo to Artemis with Alan W. Green

Send us Fan Mail Two hundred fifty years ago a beer salesman named Timothy Matlack copied out the Declaration of Independence in perfect hand and left two mistakes. Alan W. Green says they were never mistakes. On the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, Green returns to No Way Out. He first made the case in Ep 113. This time he goes all the way in. Ponch and co-host James "Bart" Bartelloni sit with 22 years of Green's work. Count every character in the original and you get 6,771. The mirror of 1776. Drop it into a grid and every line runs 111 wide. Take the distance from the Earth to the Moon, divide by that number, and you land on the speed of light. Green reads all of it as pattern. Discovered, not invented. No Way Out does not tell you the codes are real. The show does what it always does. Take outside information seriously. Run it against orientation. Watch destruction and creation happen when a 250 year old document meets a room that refuses to dismiss anything on sight. Boyd said orientation shapes what you are able to observe before you observe it. Green says the founders left a way to reorient. Michael Levin's platonic space, active inference, the fourth turning, the precession of the equinox, sacred geometry. It all runs back to the one question this show was built on. How does anything stay current with a reality that never stops moving. You do not have to arrive at 100 percent. Bart runs 51 percent and says so on the record. Either way, this one stretches the aperture.
