When you released the first episode on the subject, every or seemingly every NBA podcast talked about this subject at least once if not more. About the same time as the Wachtel investigation was announced, crickets. No doubt that if you talk about the NBA daily, you must be granted some form of access. Clearly that access is closely guarded and controlled. Bad press can kill a sport. Baseballs Black Sox scandal did huge damage and caused the appointment of a judge as commissioner. 100 years later gambling on sports is so pervasive incidents of doubt are rarely unearthed, not withstanding the current Chinese basketball revelation. Horse racing survived a long time through drug issues and suspicion. Gamblers accepted crooked owners, trainers and jockeys making a slick buck in order to pay their bills and get out of town. Computer assisted gambling is killing that game, along with a century long removal of horses from the common persons experience. Sports gambling is riding a huge wave, but soon bettors will come to doubt outcomes because computer assisted outcomes ALWAYS win over time. Horse racing cannot exist without gambling and I fear other sports will follow the same outcome because so much value is tied to gambling. Team values, player salaries, product endorsements are all tied to gambling. Computer assisted wagers are always placed just before the cutoff time to insure the correct solution and best odds. And these gamblers got preferential treatment at the tracks. It’s not like they’re picking a winner, they bet every horse in the race by likely outcome, final odds in any number of product wagers so that, no matter the outcome, they are guaranteed a positive ROI. It might only be 5-10% per race but do that 20-50 times a day and you’ll do well. These markets are also subsidized with a rebate based on total amount wagered. If you think this doesn’t happen with other sports then I’ve got a bridge or two to sell you. NO ONE but NO ONE cares about the daily punter who goes broke, loses house, spouse, job, respect even for their self. NO ONE.
