    175. "I Hate My Body": How to Heal Your Relationship With Your Body After Decades of Self Criticism

You have spent decades trying to change your body, believing that once you did, you'd finally feel better about yourself and somehow, life would feel happier too. Maybe you've dieted for decades. You've picked apart certain parts of your body. You've compared yourself to other women. And somewhere along the way, you started believing that changing your body would finally change everything. Anne Poirier is back on the Emotional Eats Podcast after our first powerful conversation in Episode 151. I thought the first was deep, but this time we're going deeper. What does it actually mean to heal your relationship with your body? Because healing doesn't necessarily mean looking in the mirror every morning and loving everything you see. It may mean learning to trust your body again, quieting the voice that constantly criticizes it, and taking care of yourself without punishment, perfectionism, or another diet. Anne and I also talk about something I know can feel complicated. What if you want to stop dieting, but you still want your body to change? Can those two things exist at the same time? In this conversation, we talk about: What healing your relationship with your body actually looks like in everyday life How decades of dieting can disconnect you from your body and its signals Why the inner critic can be so hard to quiet Wanting your body to change without going back to dieting and punishment How social media, GLP-1s, AI, and our changing culture are affecting body image Moving your body from a place of joy instead of trying to earn food or change your size If you've spent years telling yourself, "I'll feel better when I lose the weight," this conversation may give you a very different way to think about your body, your health, and what it means to finally stop waiting to live your life. Make sure you go back and listen to Anne's first interview. Episode 151   About Anne Poirier Anne Poirier is a nationally recognized body image expert, certified intuitive eating counselor, and author of The Body Joyful: My Journey from Self-Loathing to Self-Acceptance. 174. Eating Disorders, Genetics, and the Brain: What We May Be Missing

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast! Paige Gordon lived with bulimia nervosa for over two decades. She went through residential treatment, inpatient treatment, therapy, and nutritional counseling, yet continued to struggle. What made her experience especially difficult was being given explanations for her eating disorder that never seemed to fit. Paige didn't relate to an obsession with thinness, and she didn't feel that emotional eating explained what was happening either. Instead, she describes an intense drive toward food and constant food noise that felt biological. Eventually, her own recovery experience led her to start asking a different question: What was actually happening in her brain and body? Today, Paige is an author, advocate, speaker, and member of the Board of Directors of the National Eating Disorders Association. She has become deeply involved in eating disorder research and advocacy, with a particular interest in genetics, brain reward pathways, hunger and satiety signaling, and the potential role of GLP-1 pathways. In this conversation, Paige shares: • Why eating disorders may have very different underlying causes from one person to another • What food noise felt like for her and why it was different from hunger • How genetics, trauma, environment, and reward circuitry may influence eating behavior • Her personal experience with GLP-1 medication and why she believes much more research is needed • Why lived experience needs a bigger voice in eating disorder research • Why women struggling with food deserve curiosity and compassion instead of comparison and shame We also talk about how easily eating disorders can remain hidden, the difference between disordered eating and a diagnosed eating disorder, and why Paige believes treatment needs to become much more individualized. Paige's upcoming memoir, Searching for Full, tells the story of her eating disorder, recovery, and search for answers. One hundred percent of her royalties will go back into eating disorder research. This is a fascinating conversation about how much we still have to learn about the brain, eating behavior, and why the same answers may not work for every woman. About Paige Gordon Paige Gordon is an eating disorder recovery advocate, speaker, and author of Searching for Full. After living with bulimia for 22 years, she began questioning the long-held belief that our relationship with food is simply a matter of willpower. Today, she combines her lived experience with emerging research in neuroscience and biology to help people better understand food noise, emotional eating, and the complex factors that shape our relationship with food. As a member of the Board of Directors of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), Paige collaborates with researchers, clinicians, and advocacy organizations to advance a more biologically informed understanding of eating disorders. Her work encourages people to replace shame with curiosity and empowers them to approach food, body image, and healing with greater compassion and understanding. 173. Peptides for Women Over 40: What You Need to Know Before You Try Them

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast! Peptides are everywhere right now. GLP-1s, BPC-157, growth hormone-releasing peptides, copper peptides. But what exactly are they, and where do they fit into your health as a woman in midlife?  Is it real or a new trend? In this episode, I sit down with Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and peptide-trained practitioner Bria Gadd for a conversation that helped me understand this rapidly growing area of women's health in a completely different way. Bria breaks down what peptides actually are, why women over 40 are becoming so interested in them, and the potential roles they may play in metabolic health, recovery, muscle, gut health, skin, hair, weight loss, and healthy aging. But this conversation isn't about chasing the newest quick fix. Bria explains why nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, metabolic health, and hormone optimization need to come first. We also talk about GLP-1s and food noise, testing before using peptides, cycling, potential risks, sourcing, and why buying peptides from questionable sources can be a very different thing from working with a qualified practitioner and compounding pharmacy. This is one of my favorite points from Bria. Think of your health like a cake. Your foundations are the cake. Hormone optimization is the icing. Peptides and other biohacking tools are the sprinkles. You have to bake the cake first. In this episode, we talk about: What peptides are and how they work in the body Why peptides are getting so much attention from midlife women The health foundations Bria wants in place before considering peptides GLP-1s, metabolic health, insulin resistance, food noise, and weight loss BPC-157, growth hormone-releasing peptides, and GHK-Cu copper peptides Why testing and hormone optimization can matter before starting peptide therapy Safety, cycling, sourcing, compounding pharmacies, and the peptide gray market Why peptides may be a powerful tool for some women, but aren't meant to replace the work you're already doing for your health If you've been hearing about peptides and wondering whether they're something you should explore, this episode will help you understand the conversation, know what questions to ask, and make a more informed decision about what may be right for you. About Bria Gadd Bria Gadd is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® Practitioner, holistic health coach, and certified personal trainer, who specializes in female hormones, helping women with weight release and energy gain in pre and post menopause, and finding clarity in hormonal chaos.   After helping thousands of women lose weight in their 20's and 30's, Bria recognized a difficult shift in women's ability to get results in their body during their perimenopause years. 172. How to Reinvent Yourself in Midlife and Feel More Alive

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast! Maybe it's more joy. More fun. More connection. More freedom. Or maybe you've spent so many years being the mom, the caregiver, the responsible one, the strong one, that somewhere along the way you stopped asking yourself a really important question: What do I actually want? In this episode, Caroline (Caro) de Posada and I talk about what happens when the life you've built looks good on paper, but something still feels off. We get into the guilt that can come with admitting you're not happy with something you think you should be grateful for, the identities you've carried for years, and the fear that can keep you choosing what's familiar even when you know you want something different. We also talk about permission. Permission to change your mind. To break some of the rules you've been living by. To stop waiting until you lose the weight, the kids grow up, work slows down, or everything finally falls into place before you let yourself enjoy your life. And Caro gives us a simple way to start: Notice. Name. Nurture. You don't need to overhaul your life. You need to start paying attention to what's working, what you want, and the next small step that moves you toward it. In This Episode: Why you can lose touch with what you actually enjoy and want How fear, old identities, and people pleasing can keep you stuck Why waiting for the next goal can keep you from enjoying your life now Caroline's simple Notice, Name, Nurture approach How to start noticing and creating more moments of joy and aliveness in your everyday life If you are looking to get back to yourself, this is the episode for you! About Caroline de Posada Caroline de Posada is a bilingual life coach, speaker, and podcast host (Bliss'n Up) who helps high-achievers stop drifting and start choosing a life that sparks joy. 171. How to Stop Emotional Eating by Understanding the 4 Emotional Eater Types

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast! You know you're not always hungry when you are reaching for the food, but you still find yourself digging into the sugar or food especially at night and wondering, why can't I stop doing this? In this episode, I'm talking with registered dietitian Sherri Clarke, creator of the Four Emotional Eater Types framework, about why emotional eating goes so much deeper than food, discipline, or trying harder. Sherri also shares her own powerful experience with emotional eating and how food became a source of comfort for her long before she understood what was happening. We talk about the patterns you may have learned years ago, why they can still show up decades later, and how getting curious instead of critical can begin to change your relationship with food. In this episode, you'll hear: The four different emotional eater types and how to recognize yourself in them How childhood experiences can shape the way you use food today Why high-achieving, disciplined women can still feel completely out of control around food How IFS can help you understand the "parts" of you that turn to food A simple CBT tool to help interrupt an emotional eating moment How mindfulness can help you pause and ask what you actually need Why willpower may work temporarily but doesn't create lasting change Why healing emotional eating doesn't necessarily mean never eating emotionally again This conversation isn't about giving you more food rules. It's about helping you understand why you're reaching for the food in the first place and what might change when you stop fighting yourself and start getting curious. About Sherri Clarke Sherri Clarke is a registered dietitian with a master's degree and special training in IFS, CBT, and Mindfulness. She's been in private practice since 2013, working exclusively with adults who want to change their relationship with food. She's also the creator of the 4 Emotional Eater Types framework and the Emotional Eater Quiz at sherriclarkenutrition.com. 170. Why You Can't Stop Emotional Eating in Midlife

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast! I had been connecting with Maryanna on social media for a while, and somewhere along the way I started listening to her podcast, Take the Turn, with her husband Jay. I really enjoyed their conversations about navigating midlife and all the changes that come with it. So when they asked me to come on and talk about emotional eating, I was extremely honored. And we had such a great conversation. We talked about my own history with emotional and secret eating, why you cannot out-diet emotional eating, and why midlife and menopause can make our relationship with food feel even harder. We also get into sugar cravings and dopamine, perfectionism and people pleasing, blood sugar, slowing down when you eat, and why so many capable women can take care of everyone and everything but still feel out of control around food. Most importantly, we talk about looking beyond what you're eating and getting curious about what is happening before you reach for the food. If you've ever wondered why you know what to do but still find yourself reaching for sugar, overeating, or using food to comfort yourself, I think you'll really enjoy this conversation. Check out the Take the Turn Podcast especially if you are in your 40's and 50's and are navigating all the midlife things. 169. Why You Keep Starting Over With Weight Loss (Especially After 40)

Welcome to the Emotional Eats Podcast! I'm so glad you're here. How many times have you said, "I'll start after vacation... after the holidays... when life settles down... when I lose the weight"? The problem is that life never really settles down.  Are you putting off your health and happiness all the time? In this episode, I'm challenging one of the biggest beliefs keeping women stuck: that you'll finally take care of yourself, feel confident, or be happy when the timing is perfect. We talk about: Why waiting for the "right time" keeps you stuck The hidden cost of putting your life on hold How the "I'll be happy when..." mindset steals your joy Why your health habits need to work in your daily and real life, not some perfect life Small, sustainable actions you can start today that are easy How to stop postponing your happiness and start living now because you deserve it Your body doesn't have to hold your life hostage. You don't have to wait until you lose the weight to enjoy vacations, take the picture, wear the clothes, or fully live. Your life isn't the dress rehearsal. It's happening right now. Don't miss out!
