How to Get Wealthy Clients to Pay on Time

Why do wealthy private clients pay late, and how do you get paid on time without awkward chasing? The answer is to take the money before the work, in stages, and this video shows exactly how to set that up. For most wealthy clients your invoice simply doesn’t register. £8,000 is serious money to you and small change to someone who has just bought a house for £12 million. Your invoice often then lands in a personal inbox when a PA, house manager, family office or bookkeeper would have paid it the same afternoon. And there’s the pain of paying: handing over money hurts more once the thing you’re paying for is finished, which is generally when a supplier invoice arrives. In this video I discuss how bespoke luxury businesses, from Savile Row tailors to interior designers, handle payment terms, using a worked example of a £30,000 design fee split into three stages paid in advance, with furniture, fabrics, travel and expenses paid in full before anything is ordered. I also cover why chasing gets harder once a client relationship has drifted into feeling like a friendship (communal versus exchange relationships), why “no rush at all” emails guarantee you won’t be paid, a polite chasing sequence that actually works, and when to stop working for a client altogether. Useful for anyone running a small business with high net worth private clients. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹: https://www.youtube.com/@luxuryacademy 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆: https://www.luxuryacademy.co.uk/ 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿: https://www.luxuryacademynewsletter.com

Why You Should Never Pitch for Free: Adverse Selection

The moment you agree to design a comprehensive project brief or pitch a corporate client without a cleared budget, you are funding their development stage for free. In this video, I break down the hidden commercial pitfalls of corporate procurement, the escalation of commitment trap, and why writing proposals for unapproved budgets guarantees your firm will get ghosted. ----- Some companies are bloody cheeky. When did it suddenly become normal to be asked to design and lay out an entire build spec so companies "can explore if there's a potential fit"? We had an RFP come in this week. Good brief, actually. They'd thought about what they wanted, which isn't always the case, and the project was well within the sort of work we do. They wanted us to build the programme, deliver it, then hand it over to their own academy. Fine, we license content all the time. But they also wanted the whole thing designed as part of the proposal. Modules, durations, case studies, role plays, assessment methodology, scoring rubrics, even the reinforcement plan for three months afterwards. By the time you've answered all of that, you've basically created the entire programme. So we asked what budget had been approved. They hadn't decided. They were going to look at everyone's proposals first and work it out from those. Oh hell no. Now, I can quite understand wanting to know what something costs before committing to it. Have a conversation with the provider. Tell them roughly what you're thinking of spending and they can tell you what's possible. But asking several suppliers to spend two or three weeks working out the entire programme, so you can then decide whether there's a project, is taking the weewee big time. And the temptation for you is to do it anyway, because it's a big company and it could be a substantial contract, and you don't want to rule yourself out. Then by the time you've spent three days on it stopping feels stupid. So by the second week you're now arranging another "exploratory" call because that somehow feels more convincing and easier than accepting the fact that you, and 4 other companies are basically handing over an entire programme build for free. You need to catch yourself before this happens. We thanked them for thinking of us and withdrew. I've no objection to competing for work. I do object to doing the work as part of the competition, for free. We're a business not a charity. Chapters: 00:00 The RFP with no budget in it 02:34 What happens when you ask for the number 03:14 Reason one: you're being asked to design it for free 04:38 Reason two: it changes who bids, not what it costs 05:25 Reason three: nobody has approved any money 06:10 When a buyer genuinely can't give you a figure 07:19 Why a range costs the buyer nothing 08:03 The same shape whatever you sell 09:59 Why people don't walk away, and escalation of commitment 10:33 The only cheap moment to stop 11:02 The question to send back before you write anything 11:36 What happens when you withdraw ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹: https://www.youtube.com/@LuxuryAcademy 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆: https://www.luxuryacademy.co.uk/ 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿: https://www.luxuryacademynewsletter.com

Are Luxury Stores Intentionally Designed to Intimidate?

Do global luxury brands deliberately engineer their environments to make everyday consumers feel inadequate, or are clients simply projecting their own psychological insecurities onto premium spaces? In this episode, we pull back the curtain on how elite luxury houses like Chanel, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton actually structure their operations. Discover the hidden mechanics of high-end client acquisition and why making people feel unwelcome is never a viable commercial strategy. The assumption that luxury stores use intimidation as a deliberate marketing hack completely misunderstands the actual business model of the high-end sector. Luxury houses do not optimize for mass-market crowds; they optimize for high-ticket privacy, security, and individualized attention. The queues outside elite Paris boutiques are not designed to perform status theater, they are structural limits engineered to give the salesperson the time and space required to serve an executive client properly. In this session, we strip away the surface-level marketing assumptions to explore high-end space execution. We cover: * The Harrods Impossible Maxim: Historical analysis of high-credibility, problem-solving luxury service cultures. * The Queue Management Reality: Why luxury houses tightly regulate physical inbound traffic to protect the visual environment. * Overcoming Self-Placement Bias: The hidden psychological trap where a customer disqualifies themselves before they even speak to an associate. Why Running "Special Offers" Destroys Luxury Brands

The moment your premium consulting or service business runs a public promotion, you have informed the market that your original fee was a lie. In this episode I break down the behavioral psychology of high-ticket pricing, the price-quality inference bias, and the exact script to deploy when a client demands a discount. Discover why "free" services carry absolute zero value in a client's subconscious mind, and how to protect your profit margins by reducing project scope instead of dropping your numeric worth. Every premium service provider, from interior designers and architects to corporate lawyers and executive coaches, will eventually face a prospect who looks at a quote and asks for money off. If your instinctive reaction is to simply drop your number to close the deal, you are permanently damaging your brand's authority. In the luxury market, buyers use price as a primary shortcut to calculate your competence. When you lower your fee without changing the job description, you don't look flexible, you look delusional, or desperate. If your price is unsupported by your digital presence, your proposal structure, or even the way you answer the phone, cold traffic will simply drift away to your competitors. In this episode, we strip away the surface-level marketing advice to isolate the hard laws of luxury transaction mechanics. We cover: * The Price-Quality Inference: Why the subconscious mind automatically equates cheap rates with amateur results. * The Latitude of Price Acceptance: How to pinpoint the exact pricing ceiling your specific sector will tolerate. * Gifts vs. Promotions: The precise chronological moment to deliver a complimentary asset to trigger deep client reciprocity. Why Wealthy Clients Skip Your Luxury Brand

Why does a multi-millionaire looking to invest or protect their wealth scroll past your high-end website and buy from your competitor instead? In this video I break down the complex behavioral economics of luxury signaling theory, price-quality heuristics, and the hidden pitfalls of implicit luxury. Discover why using standard tokens of wealth, like supercars or flash watches, instantly destroys your professional credibility with premium clients, and how to build high-converting "cognitive barriers" that justify your premium fees without saying a word. Every piece of marketing metadata you deploy is a signal, but you do not get to dictate what a wealthy prospect infers from it. When an independent consultant, wealth manager, or high-ticket service provider relies on unglamorous commodities like investment gold or financial products, the physical asset cannot do the heavy lifting for your brand. If your competitor is selling the exact same asset, your prospects are using the split-second cues they can observe to make deep psychological assumptions about the parts of your operation they cannot see. The moment your communication triggers skepticism, your luxury proposition collapses into mid-market noise. In this episode, we'll strip away the surface-level marketing fluff to explore how elite service providers position themselves. We'll cover: * The Inbound Signaling Trap: Why your expensive styling choices inadvertently group you with low-level online scammers. * Cognitive Effort Removal: The immense, hidden commercial premium of making a complicated corporate decision feel completely effortless. * The Price-Quality Shortcut: How to establish a distinct, human-centric differentiation when your base product is a flat commodity. How to Filter Out Timewasters. Why Your Website Needs "Failure Points"

If your corporate website has never put a single person off, you are doing something wrong. In this video I break down the high-converting psychology of B2B lead generation, explaining why casting a wide net actively destroys your team's billable hours and profitability. Discover the strategic value of "failure points," how to use pricing psychology like anchoring to instantly eliminate low-budget tire kickers, and why a dramatic drop in raw inquiry volume is often the ultimate metric of business growth. If you want to stop writing endless proposals for clients who cannot afford your luxury services, master your customer self-selection strategy, and take back control of your sales pipeline, this session is for you. An enquiry is never free. It costs time, labour, and massive operational focus, meaning that an inbox flooded with 100 unqualified requests is actually a devastatingly bad week. Most premium service providers, from commercial photographers to corporate lawyers, hide their rates because of industry peer pressure. This creates an information vacuum. Prospects automatically fill that gap with an internal reference price based on their own presumptions. The moment you use generic marketing buzzwords like "discerning clients" or "premium quality," you fail to filter the market because every consumer subconsciously believes they are premium. To protect your time, you must give unqualified traffic a mathematical reason to disqualify themselves before they ever contact you. We'll cover: * The Price Floor Rule: Why publishing a strict starting fee or project range prevents budget shock later. * Naming the Sector: The distinct structural difference between general terms and hyper-targeted campaign niches. * The Explicit "What We Don't Do" List: Why outlining your boundary conditions eliminates thousands of pounds in wasted manual triage. Why 58 Views Can Make More Money Than a Million Subscribers

Why are so many business owners obsessed with chasing YouTube subscribers and viral views that result in zero revenue? In this episode of Luxury Academy Insights, I sit down with Mike McGann (Mike Winnet) from GNG Studios to break down the reality of B2B video marketing and corporate sales strategy. We discuss why building a personal brand can actively damage your business exit strategy, how to create high-converting "conversion assets," and how a single video with only 58 views generated an £80,000 corporate client. If you want to stop chasing vanity metrics and start using video to close high-ticket sales, this conversation is for you. For someone who owns a major video production company, Mike has a surprising sales pitch: you probably need way less video than you think. Most marketing agencies try to sell you on massive impression counts, daily posting schedules, and standard LinkedIn "vulnerability" templates. But if your business only needs 15 to 20 high-value clients a year to smash its targets, why are you marketing to a crowd of millions? In this interview, we strip away the guru fluff and talk about the hard work of selling like a sniper. We cover: • The Conversion Trap: Why your team is sitting on their hands hoping the organic algorithm does their job. • The Authenticity Myth: Why your ideal corporate clients don't care about your morning routine or your breakfast. • Secret Marketing: How to put the exact asset your prospect needs directly into their hands without relying on public feeds. Is "Fake Confidence" Actually Real? The Psychology of Trying to "Act Natural

Why does trying to look confident often make you look completely unnatural? In this video, we break down the social psychology of confidence training, body language, and why the advice to "fake it till you make it" usually backfires by making you hyper-aware of yourself. We dive into how self-perception theory actually works, why your brain needs evidence before it feels secure, and how to practice natural confidence without looking stiff or awkward.Nothing makes people behave more strangely than being told to “act natural”. The moment it happens, you immediately start overthinking your every move.Confidence training does this to people all the time. Some poor unfortunate gets told to hold eye contact for three seconds, sit forward, pause before answering, and drop their voice at the end of a sentence. Then everyone wonders why they suddenly look like they’re desperate for the loo.The problem isn’t the advice. The problem is having to think about it. The second you start monitoring your own behaviour, you become weirdly aware of yourself. So you stop listening properly because half your attention is busy checking whether your face is doing confidence. This is also why I hate “fake it till you make it”. It makes confidence sound like a performance. It isn’t.You practise a few behaviours until they become normal enough that you stop noticing them. Then your brain does something quite interesting and starts treating the behaviour as evidence about who you are. That’s self-perception. Which means confidence often turns up after the behaviour, not before it.
