    Forbidden Forests

    This is coming to you from our Patreon this week! Lets discuss some forests with dark pasts and spooky reputations. I am covering two with strange ring-like clearings where nothing grows and we do not know why. One is The Tramping Ground in NC and the other is in Transylvania, Romania, of all places. The Hoia-Baciu forest in Romania has a long list of paranormal reports from UFOs to werewolves to vengeful spirits. Even the trees grow crooked in this place. Literally. Aokigahara forest at the base of Mt Fuji in Japan is also known as the Suicide Forest (in English) as it has an unfortunate history of the act taking place there. There have been numerous deaths by suicide in this forest every year since the 1960s especially. Why and how is this being handled today? Finally, we head to Germany to traverse the Black Forest. This one has inspired a number of Grimms' Fairytales and there are many stories and heaps of folklore attached to these woods. Alongside this one, we are talking about the Hinterkaifeck Murders as some have connected the two. These locations are over 100 miles apart according to what I have read. Either way, the story of the murders is well-known and has been one of Germany's most gruesome and puzzling crimes. It is still unsolved. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters!     Manchac Swamp & The Curse of Aunt Julia Brown

    Hello Poison Friends! The season is getting spooky and so shall we! I mean, more so than usual. We need to take a look at the Manchac Swamp region of Louisiana. We're going over some poisonous plants, dangerous creatures, and the curse of Aunt Julia Brown. A former slave and later landowner in the town of Frenier, Aunt Julia was a healer, and a practitioner of hoodoo/voodoo. While out on her porch playing her guitar and singing she reportedly sang about taking the town with her when she died. Interestingly, at her funeral a year later (in 1915), a Category four hurricane came to town. Hundreds were killed and thousands were left homeless. Was it the curse or coincidence?     J&J: Ortho Evra + Hip Implants

    Hey there Poison Friends! We are ending out run down of Johnson & Johnson here with an episode on their birth control patch from the early 2000s and their metal-on-metal hip replacement implant (Pinnacle). We've obviously covered a lot of lies and cover ups concerning J&J products and it just seems to get worse as they get bolder. Ortho Evra was supposed to be this new way to prevent pregnancy or deliver estrogen to the body and promised to be similar to a low dose pill. This idea of low dose estrogen is a big deal, because it was discovered early on in the birth control game that higher amounts of estrogen resulted in much higher risks for blood clots as in DVTs, leading to disabling and sometimes deadly consequences such as heart attacks, strokes, and pulmonary embolisms. So why were these clotting incidents occurring in more women on the patch? We also need to discuss the safety mandates involved in complex medical devices such as those placed internally like implants for hips. J&J created a metal-on-metal implant for the hip with the intention of having a narrower gap between parts because of previous problems with such devices. When this design wasn't holding up, however, they simply lied about the specifications when submitting for approval. Eventually, their lies caught up with them.     Advertisements That Should Never Have Been

    Hello Poison Friends! Erin and I are having some fun this week just looking through some ads from the 1800s and early-mid 1900s, that would never have been approved or allowed today. Many of these are for products that would also be illegal and toxic to those consuming them and yes, some of them were for children as well. We are also covering some old misogynistic ads featuring the "typical 50's house wife" and so on.     J&J, Purdue Pharma, and The Opioid Crisis

We are working our way through the many skeletons in Johnson & Johnson's closet (alongside some other pharmaceutical companies), and need to discuss their role in the Opioid Crisis here in America. We are covering one of their more dangerous and controversially advertised drugs, the Duragesic fentanyl patch, as well as one from Purdue Pharma--oxycontin. We'll do a refresh on opioids since we have already covered them in another episode, and look at how these medications became so overused and the shady practices these companies took part in to push them on way more than what they were originally intended for.     Risperdal Scandals (J&J Pt 4)

    Hello Poison Friends! We need to discuss Johnson & Johnson's misadventure into mental healthcare. Once their previous antipsychotic, Haldol, neared its patent expiration, the company plotted to come up with a new atypical antipsychotic that could take its place and earn them more money. They presented Risperdal as a safer and more effective treatment for schizophrenia, even though studies suggested otherwise. They priced the drug so high, that even medicaid could not afford to cover it for those with schizophrenia or bipolar with psychosis. When it became clear that this one population was not enough to earn them the money they really wanted, they pushed to have the drug approved for Dementia in elderly patients and for just about any sign of anxiety or agitation in children. Antipsychotics can have significant side effects and Risperdal has been labeled as toxic to those not diagnosed with schizophrenia because of these.     Johnson&Johnson Pt3: Procrit

    Hello our Poison Friends! We are back to fill you in on some more shady deeds from Johnson & Johnson's past. We have another Pharma guest appearance in this one, because Amgen was also involved in the synthetic erythropoietin business. Erythropoietin is the hormone released by the kidneys that stimulates red blood cell production. RBCs are produced in the blood marrow within bones. It always amazes me how the various systems of the body team up to keep everything balanced. Unfortunately, anemia (low RBCs/hemoglobin) is a common issue with kidney diseases, those on dialysis, and cancer patients. As such, these pharmaceutical companies sought to create synthetic erythropoietin to sell to these groups of patients. They succeeded and the treatment made billions of dollars in sales over the years. Relieving the effects of anemia in those with these already taxing conditions sounds great, but there were a number of problems. As it turns out, an increase in the hormone (and RBCs as a result) can lead to clotting, strokes, and heart attacks. Even worse, one researcher called the drug Miracle-Gro for tumors. Hundreds of thousands of patients were likely killed as a result of the treatment and J&J's hiding of study results. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! We truly appreciate you all!     Life, Liberty...and Toxicity?

    Hello Poison Friends! Erin and I are taking a break from our breakdown of Johnson & Johnson's dark deeds, this week. Why? So we can celebrate America's Independence with stories of Founding Fathers and intrepid explorers of the nation and their encounters with poison. We are going a bit deeper into the medicinal chaos of Dr. Benjamin Rush, the only doctor to sign the Declaration of Independence. A great follower and teacher of "heroic medicine," he was a believer in excessive bloodletting, administering purgatives, and using blistering agents to make the ailing (literally) sweat it out. He also taught Captain Meriwether Lewis, of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition, all of his...remedies, should his team need them on the journey. Speaking of Meriwether Lewis, his death only 3 years after their return was full of suspicious details and conspiracy. Finally, we need to discuss the death of George Wythe, member of the constitutional convention, friend and mentor to Thomas Jefferson, lawyer, professor, and all around good guy (especially for the time period).
