    The Drift Principle

Drift is the kind of change that sneaks up on you. One day you look up and something about you is different, and you can’t quite name when it happened. I’m Aaron Havens, and in this Growth Instigators Hotline message, I break down why that slow shift happens and why it matters for leadership, habits, and personal growth. We start with a simple frame: if you’re alive, you’re leading something. That means your standards, your mood, and your daily choices are always pointing somewhere, even when you’re not trying. Drift often shows up as tiny compromises, a corner cut when you’re tired, or a quiet promise to yourself that you stop keeping. It doesn’t feel like a big deal in the moment, which is exactly why it can be so powerful over time. Then we flip it: drift runs both directions. The same compounding effect that can pull you off course can also build you up. A little kinder today. A little more honest with yourself today. A little better follow-through today. Those 1% gains don’t feel dramatic either, but they add up while you’re not watching, and they shape the kind of leader you become. If you’ve been feeling “off” lately, this is your prompt to stop and check your direction. Listen, reflect on the questions, and if you want help pointing that drift the right way, come find me at growthinstigators.com. Confidence Without Defensiveness

Confidence is supposed to set you free, so why does it sometimes feel like the better you get, the harder it is to learn? We pull apart a sneaky leadership trap: the same confidence that helps you start a new job, take a risk, or step into responsibility can quietly turn into a shield you can’t put down. We talk about what happens when you stop being the beginner and become the person who’s “supposed to know.” That identity can make admitting uncertainty feel dangerous, so we cover, overwork, and explain our way out of the very feedback that could make us better. Instead of hearing input as information, we treat it like an attack. And then we double down on effort, telling ourselves that if we just push longer and care more, it will all sort itself out. Here’s the shift we’re aiming for: not less confidence, but less defensiveness. We explore how effort can create a blind spot when it’s used to avoid the truth, why pride rarely feels like arrogance from the inside, and how staying curious changes everything. You’ll walk away with a clear question to ask yourself, plus a practical way to start receiving hard feedback without needing to “win” the conversation. If you want someone in your corner who tells you the truth kindly, we share how one-on-one growth coaching can help. Clarity Is Care

You can genuinely care about people and still wear them out. That tension sits at the heart of this Growth Instigators Hotline message: when we keep things vague, we don’t create freedom, we create exhaustion. I unpack why “I care about people” isn’t proven by good intentions, it’s proven by the day-to-day experience we design for the people around us. I dig into a leadership truth that stings because it’s so practical: a bad system will beat a good person every time. When roles, handoffs, and expectations aren’t clear, even great teammates start to feel frustrated with each other. It looks like a motivation problem or an attitude problem, but it’s often an operations and communication problem hiding in plain sight. The “ball” doesn’t get dropped, it never gets clearly handed to anyone. If you’ve avoided process because it feels cold or corporate, I make the case that clarity is not the enemy of warmth. A clear process is what care looks like once there’s more than one person in the room. Structure protects your most conscientious people, reduces burnout, and turns trust into something real: a plan everyone can rely on. I’ll leave you with a pointed question to take back to your team about where you’ve asked people to “figure it out” instead of giving them what they need. If this helped, subscribe for more leadership, systems thinking, and growth coaching insights, share it with a friend who leads a team, and leave a quick review so more people can find the show. https://growthinstigators.com/
