Ep 49: She Lost Her Son, Then Her Husband. Three Children Still Needed Her.

Losing a child. Losing a husband. Raising three grandchildren while carrying both losses.   How do you grieve when everyone still needs you?   In this episode of Run to the Hard, Curtis Christopher sits down with Tina Allen for an honest conversation about child loss, widowhood, addiction in the family, and trusting God when life keeps getting harder.   Tina remembers her son Cody as a bright, compassionate boy who loved people. As he grew older, addiction changed his life and their family. She shares the painful lessons of loving a child through addiction, setting boundaries, and stepping in with her husband Tim to raise Cody's three children.   In May 2022, Cody died at 31 from health complications. Tina was hospitalized herself when she learned she needed to get to his bedside. She held her son as he passed away, then returned to the hospital for her own treatment. A meaningful day of conversation and prayer shortly before his death remains a source of comfort.   The following year, Tim was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Five months later, Tina lost the husband who had helped her carry everything.   Now raising three grandchildren without him, Tina speaks openly about grief that feels unfinished, the loss of the life she expected, and learning who she is after losing both her son and her spouse.   This conversation makes room for sorrow and faith, exhaustion and love, questions and hope. If you are grieving a child or spouse, raising grandchildren, or loving someone through addiction, we hope Tina's story helps you feel less alone.   IN THIS EPISODE   - A mother's experience of loving a son through drug addiction - The difference between helping and enabling a loved one - Grandparents raising grandchildren through kinship care - Becoming parents again at 50 - Losing an adult child and finding comfort in their final conversations - Grieving while children still depend on you - Losing a husband to pancreatic cancer - Widowhood, caregiving, and raising children after loss - How grief changes your identity, relationships, and faith - Finding Christian hope without pretending the pain is over   CHAPTERS   00:00 Holding her son, then returning to her own hospital 00:28 Meet Tina Allen: child loss, widowhood, and raising grandchildren 03:41 Remembering Tim: the man who never met a stranger 05:31 How Tina and Tim's love story began 09:31 The grocery-store story that captures Tim 11:16 Remembering Cody before addiction 15:36 When her son's struggle with addiction began 21:51 Tough love and the strain on a family 23:16 Taking custody of their granddaughter 26:31 Learning to help without giving money 29:06 Learning two more grandchildren were coming 33:26 Kinship care and saying yes to the twins 37:06 Becoming parents again at 50 37:46 Compassion and boundaries with the children's parents 41:46 Mother and son hospitalized at the same time 44:41 The call that brought Tina to Cody's bedside 47:51 Their final Friday together 52:16 Holding her son and finding peace amid heartbreak 54:46 Returning to the hospital after her son's death 56:41 The unexpected help with Cody's funeral 58:36 Grieving while three children still need you 1:02:21 Tim's symptoms and the search for answers 1:07:51 The pancreatic cancer diagnosis 1:11:01 Five months of treatment and caregiving 1:16:06 Tim's fear of leaving his family 1:20:31 "I should be able to be their grandma" 1:22:31 Encouragement for grandparents raising children 1:27:06 Who am I after these losses? 1:28:01 Grief, emotional walls, and a smaller circle 1:33:36 "I thought God would make Tim a miracle story" 1:34:26 Tim's gratitude for 19 more years 1:35:21 How loss changes relationships and priorities 1:38:26 A message to parents facing a child's addiction 1:44:26 When grief, relief, and guilt coexist 1:45:46 Tim's legacy: love deeply and care for your family 1:48:16 A prayer for grieving parents, widows, and grandparents   ABOUT RUN TO THE HARD   Run to the Hard is a podcast about grief, suffering, faith, hope, and finding life after loss.   The show was inspired by Michal Christopher's words:   "Run to the hard, run to the hurt because it's in the greatest hard that God's gonna do the greatest work."   You do not have to have a neat ending to share your story. Annelise Hines is living with stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her bones. She calls herself the luckiest girl in the world.   Between treatments, she's using the days she feels well to build care packages for other cancer patients. At the time of this conversation, she had delivered 100—and she wasn't ready to stop.   In this episode of Run to the Hard, Annelise joins Curtis Christopher to share her story: a childhood shaped by addiction and instability, finding family with her husband Connor, becoming a mom to Dawson, and receiving her first breast cancer diagnosis at 25.   When the cancer returned, Annelise faced the fear of leaving her son and the question of how to live with a future she couldn't control. Ep 43: Healing Childhood Hurt and Finding Purpose with R.D. Saunders

A college assignment asked R.D. Saunders to write about his family. What surfaced was years of childhood pain—and a decision: "I will not be a bad father." Growing up with an abusive father who struggled with alcoholism, R.D. carried hurt he hadn't fully faced. In this conversation with Curtis Christopher, he shares how God began a work of healing in a college dorm room—and how he eventually returned to lead that same school, Ohio Christian University. Together, they explore the pain we bury, the people who help us heal, and how those experiences can shape a life of service. Curtis also shares how his late wife Michal's example helped him begin reaching toward others through his own grief. IN THIS EPISODE: • The grandfather who became the father figure R.D. needed. • The writing assignment that brought hidden hurt to the surface. • The emotional "junk drawer" where we store unresolved pain. • Why R.D. initially turned down the university presidency. • How Isaiah 61 shaped his vision for helping students heal and grow. • Why supporting someone through grief begins with listening, humility, and knowing when to seek help.
