Remember the Sabbath: CH Spurgeon's Views on the Lord's Day

Are Christians still required to keep the Sabbath? And what does keeping the Sabbath really look like? On this episode we will answer these important questions and many others as we consider the role of the sabbath in the Christian life through the lens of the convictions and teachings of Charles Spurgeon. We’ll hear from Pastor Brandon Rhea, author of “Spurgeon's Forgotten Sabbatarianism: Examining the Role of the 4th Commandment in His Life and Theology.” Rhea is the pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri and received his Ph.D. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, with his dissertation being focused on the Sabbath views of the Prince of Preachers. In this conversation we will: • Dispel some caricatures about the Sabbath • Discuss whether or not this command is still binding for us today • How to begin observing the Sabbath if you have never really set it apart as the Lord’s Day. Along the way, we’ll learn how a commitment to the Sabbath shaped Spurgeon’s ministry, what this looked like in his own life over the years, and how this conviction runs like a thread throughout his preaching and teaching. The First Cry From the Cross: A Sermon by CH Spurgeon on Luke 23:34

The sermon "The First Cry from the Cross" was delivered on October 24, 1869 by Charles Haddon Spurgeon. The passage is Luke 23:34, which records Jesus' prayer for forgiveness for those who crucified Him: “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” In this message Spurgeon emphasizes the importance of continuous prayer, regardless of circumstances, and uses Jesus' prayer to illustrate the nature of His intercession for humanity. The sermon encourages believers to emulate Jesus' compassion and unselfishness, demonstrating how His first cry from the cross serves as a profound example of love and forgiveness. SELECT QUOTES FROM THIS SERMON "Let us continue in prayer so long as our heart beats; let no excess of suffering drive us away from the throne of grace, but rather let it drive us closer to it." - CH Spurgeon "It was not without meaning that he taught us when we pray to say, “Our Father,” for our prevalence in prayer will much depend upon our confidence in our relationship to God." - CH Spurgeon "The first business of every Christian man and woman is with the hearts and consciences of men as they stand before the everlasting God. O let nothing turn you aside from your divine errand of mercy to undying souls." - CH Spurgeon Thanks for listening to the Spurgeon Legacy Podcast! Zealous, but Wrong | A CH Spurgeon Sermon on Romans 10:1-3

In "Zealous But Wrong," CH Spurgeon emphasizes that salvation is not achieved through zealous works or religious fervor, but solely through faith in Christ. He reflects on the Apostle Paul’s warning against zeal without knowledge in Romans 10, noting that many are driven by religious enthusiasm yet lack a true understanding of God’s righteousness. Spurgeon argues that human efforts, no matter how earnest or well-intentioned, cannot earn salvation; only Christ’s righteousness can justify a person before God. — SELECT QUOTES — "It is of no use to be zealous if you are zealous in a wrong cause." "The man that is desperately earnest in a wrong way, if you can but show him his wrong, and teach him what is right, will be just as earnest in the right way. Oh, what splendid Christians some would make who are now such devotees of superstition!" "It is easier to get a sinner out of his sin than a self-righteous man out of his self-righteousness." "Those who are satisfied with their own holiness are ignorant of God’s attribute of righteousness." — ADDITIONAL RESOURCES — ✉️ Subscribe to CHSpurgeon.com for timeless Spurgeon sermons delivered with the dynamic of live preaching: https://www.chspurgeon.com/subscribe/ 🔗 Visit CHSpurgeon.com for more resources from and about the Prince of Preachers 🎧Purchase multi-sermon volumes of MP3 Spurgeon sermons 📖 Purchase Spurgeon: A Biography by Arnold Dallimore   — About Sermons from CHSpurgeon.com —  There are no existing recordings of CH Spurgeon preaching.
