Take It Personal (Ep 192: Cold Case Files) with Threat

On Episode 192 of Take It Personal Radio, we debut our newest series, Cold Case Files.   Over the last 10 years, we’ve interviewed some of the biggest names in hip-hop. Some of our favorite rappers, some of your favorite rappers and plenty of people in between. Rappers, producers, record label executives and even media personalities. But Take It Personal has never just been about playing the records you already know. Anybody can play the f*****g hits. We want to remind you why those records mattered, introduce you to the ones you might have missed and give you the stories and context behind the music. Because sometimes knowing the story can make a record sound completely different. Sometimes the lesson comes from a classroom. Sometimes it comes through your speakers. So after 10 years, we wanted to do something a little different. COLD CASE FILES: The Stories You Never Heard. We’re still chopping it up with guests, but this time we’re putting the spotlight on people who might not have gotten enough of it the first time around. The names you remember but don’t know enough about. The records you know, but not always the stories behind them. The people who helped build this culture without always getting the attention, credit or flowers they deserved. More eyeballs. More ears. More attention. More flowers while they’re still here to receive them. Our first Cold Case File: Deadly Threat. We get into: • His East Coast influence • Rakim & Kurupt • Growing up with DJ Pooh & Bobcat • Breaking with the Wild Style Crew • The origins of the Likwit Crew • Befriending Ice Cube during his Above the Law beef • Debuting on Color Blind and how the record came together • Working with King Tee and being around Tha Triflin’ Album and 21 & Over • Writing for 2Pac, Eazy-E & Yo-Yo • The St. Ides commercial • Touring with then-labelmates Edo G & Black Sheep • Walking from the Bronx to Brooklyn with Edo G just to get some weed • The Friday soundtrack • The story behind NY ’87 • Working with Dr. Dre • Breaking down Sickinnahead • The Mack 10 origin story — when he was still the rappers’ barber • Bumping into LL Cool J at Sylvia’s • Jumping on Nas’ Where Are They Now remix • The 300–400 unreleased Deadly Threat songs sitting in the vault • RC cars • His 10,000+ sports card collection Cold Case Files. The Stories You Never Heard. You’re listening to Take It Personal Radio— where hip-hop lives, legends are honored, and the music always speaks louder than words.   📸 Instagram: @takeitpersonalradio 🛒Store: takeitpersonalradio-shop.fourthwall.com 💖 Patreon: patreon.com/TakeItPersonal  🎧 Listen on:  Apple Podcasts / iTunes  Amazon Music  Spotify  Pandora  iHeartRadio  Player FM  Podchaser  Vevo YouTube Channel

Take It Personal Flashback (The Remix Show)

Remember the remix? Remember buying that cassette single because you needed that B-side featuring the new remix? Remember the remix that breathed new life into a track you had just started growing tired of? Remember hearing the debut of a new rapper on a remix? Remember splurging and buying that maxi-single because it had not just one remix, but two? And don't get me started on those unreleased B-side gems. That's a whole nother episode. The remix is a lost art today, but in the '90s, it meant something. Some remixes had different vocals. Some had completely different beats. Some were just flat-out better than the originals. And some remixes started, and even saved, careers for rappers and producers. Remember the first time you heard "On the Run"? What about that incredible "Stress" remix? Remember hearing Mos Def on the "Stakes Is High" remix? Episode 65 is the first installment of our Remix Series. Thanks to guys like Pete Rock, Marley Marl, DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, Salaam Remi, Large Pro, Da Beatminerz, Diamond D and Buckwild, to name a few, the remix became a staple of '90s hip-hop. We've got 68+ remixes on Episode 65 and we're just getting warmed up! At the break, the gang discusses the beauty of the remix. We pick our favorites from each set (3) and take you down music memory lane with stories mixed in with some unexpected hilarity. This is easily one of our best episodes, ever!   You’re listening to Take It Personal Radio — where hip-hop lives, legends are honored, and the music always speaks louder than words. 📸 Instagram: @takeitpersonalradio 🛒Store: takeitpersonalradio-shop.fourthwall.com 💖 Patreon: patreon.com/TakeItPersonal  🎧 Listen on:  Apple Podcasts / iTunes  Amazon Music  Spotify  Pandora  iHeartRadio  Player FM  Podchaser  Vevo YouTube Channel

Take It Personal (Ep 186: Beef)

On Episode 186 of Take It Personal Radio, we're diving headfirst into one of hip-hop's most compelling traditions: the beef record. We've assembled some of the greatest diss tracks and rivalries in rap history and woven them into one cinematic audio documentary. We also revisit clashes including Ice Cube vs. Cypress Hill, Ice Cube vs. Common, DJ Quik vs. MC Eiht, Uncle Luke vs. Dr. Dre, and more. There’s far too much history to cover in a single episode, but we do what TIP does best: deliver a carefully curated, immersive listening experience packed with legendary records, unforgettable moments, and the stories behind hip-hop’s most infamous feuds.
