E108 Saying YES to People, Purpose & a New Chapter with David McCartney

After 40 years in hospitality, David McCartney is stepping into a new chapter, but he certainly isn't stepping away from hospitality. David's career has taken him through more than 20 years with Marriott, McKibbon Hospitality, and eventually Kimpton Hotel Arras in Asheville, North Carolina. Along the way, he has led teams through challenging moments, developed future leaders, opened hotels, and built a legacy centered on people, purpose, and leadership. In this episode of the YES Show, David reflects on what four decades in hospitality have taught him about the power of saying YES, making people feel seen and trusted, and creating a lasting impact that goes far beyond awards or the hotels you've led. What You'll Learn: Leadership is about people first.A YES can open an entirely new chapter.Strong leadership shows up when things get difficult.Your hospitality legacy is bigger than your awards. 3 Things You Can Do: Ask yourself: What do I want the people I've led to remember about working with me?Think about a new opportunity, challenge, or relationship you might be overlooking, and consider what could happen if you said YES.Recognize a team member, listen to their ideas, or let them know you trust their contribution. E106 - Networking That Actually Works with Samantha Pritchard

Networking can feel awkward, transactional, or even exhausting. But what if you stopped thinking about “working the room” and started thinking about creating real connections? In this episode of The YES! Show, Samantha Pritchard, founder of Big Sister in a Blazer, shares practical strategies for making networking more intentional, natural, and effective. From her SHINE Method to her Grazer Method, Samantha shows us how to walk into a room with a plan, have better conversations, gracefully move from one connection to the next, and most importantly, follow up. Because collecting business cards isn't the goal. Building relationships is. What You'll Learn: How to SHINE at networking eventsHow the Grazer Method keeps you movingWhy the fortune really is in the follow-upHow to make your introduction memorable 3 Action Items: Choose three people. Before your next networking event, review the attendee list and identify three people you genuinely want to connect with.Ask a better question. Instead of defaulting to “What do you do?”, try Samantha's favorite: “What are you most excited about right now?”Follow up within 24 hours. Send a personal message that references something you actually discussed instead of sending a generic “Great meeting you!” message. E105 Managing the Behavior, not the Score

“We need to get our guest scores up.” It’s a phrase hotel leaders hear all the time. But what happens when we tell our teams that the score needs to improve without showing them exactly what they need to do differently? In this episode of The YES! Show, We'll challenge leaders to stop managing the number and start teaching the behaviors that create the guest experience. Using my “Arrival Advantage” example, I'll show how a hotel can transform an abstract goal like “increase friendliness” into specific behaviors that make the guest experience easy, expected, and personal. What You’ll Learn: Why guest satisfaction scores alone don't tell your team what they need to do differently. How to turn vague expectations like “be friendlier” into specific, observable behaviors. How involving frontline associates in creating standards can increase ownership and action. Why leaders must model the experience and energy they expect their teams to deliver. 3 Action Items: Pick one guest experience metric you repeatedly tell your team needs to improve.Define the behavior you want, how you want guests to feel, what the behavior looks and sounds like, and how you'll measure whether it is working.Model the behavior and energy yourself, then recognize it when your team demonstrates it and coach it when they don't. E104 The Stories Hospitality Left Out with Calvin Stovall Jr.

Today, we think of a hotel as a place to sleep. However, there was a time when finding the right hotel could mean safety, dignity, belonging, and freedom. In this powerful episode of The YES Show, Christine sits down with Calvin Stovall Jr., hospitality executive, speaker, and author of the NAACP Image Award-nominated book Hidden Hospitality.Calvin brings forward the overlooked stories of Black hoteliers and entrepreneurs dating back to the 1700s. These leaders did not simply build places to stay. They created spaces where Black travelers could gather, experience joy, build community, and fully be themselves during a time when much of the country refused to welcome them.Calvin shares how a childhood book from his mother inspired this nearly five-year journey, why he believes he was chosen to preserve these stories, and what it meant to finally place the finished book into his sons’ hands.Together, Christine and Calvin explore a powerful question: Was hospitality itself a form of resistance? They also discuss the missing pieces in hospitality’s history, the responsibility we have to share these stories all year long, and the legacy created when one person refuses to let an important story remain hidden. This conversation will change the way you think about hotels, hospitality, and what it truly means to create a place where someone belongs.Key takeaways:🎯A hotel can represent far more than a room. For many Black travelers, it represented safety, dignity, freedom, and belonging.🎯Black hoteliers and entrepreneurs created spaces of joy and community while resisting exclusion.🎯Hospitality becomes powerful when it communicates, “You are safe here. You are welcome here. You belong here.”🎯Representation shapes confidence. E103 Build a YES Culture, Not a Culture of Fear

What if your employee handbook didn’t just tell people everything they could get fired for, but also showed them everything they were empowered to do? In this solo episode of The YES Show, Let's challenge hotel leaders to rethink how they welcome and empower new team members. Policies and boundaries matter, but when onboarding focuses primarily on what employees cannot do, leaders may unintentionally train the YES right out of their teams. What You'll Learn: The first messages new team members receive can shape how confidently they make decisions and serve guests.Policies establish boundaries, while strong leadership helps employees understand what is possible within those boundaries.Constantly saying “no,” requiring unnecessary permission, or using policy as a barrier can create a culture where employees are afraid to act.Give people clarity about what they can do, useful guidelines for decision-making, and confidence that you'll support them when they are unsure. Your YES Challenge: Review your onboarding process.Ask your team one powerful question:Create your own “Yes You Can” list.
