Vegans Talking Shit

The Tofu Trio

Vegans are a controversial, much-maligned group, but we're all just regular human beings who live, love, and laugh. And man, can we talk shit. Join Jon, Vanessa, and Joey as we talk shit about what it's like to be vegan. Every week, we'll be talking shit about a different topic related to living a vegan lifestyle; the good, the bad, and the ugly. 1. Movies, TV Shows, and More Japan Talk

Movies, TV Shows, and More Japan Talk

For the second week in a row, it's just Jon and Joey holding down the fort while the resident voice of reason, Vanessa, finishes up her time in Brazil. Without Vanessa around to keep the boys in check, it's a total repeat of last week's detour, though the chaos shifts toward the world of cinema. The derailment begins when Jon points out Joey's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" t-shirt, which immediately triggers Joey into an endless soliloquy about his favorite terrible movies. From there, he pivots to his massive anticipation for the upcoming "Supergirl" movie and his deep love for the specific comics that inspired the film. Joey finally takes a breath just long enough for Jon to reclaim the microphone, and Jon uses the opportunity to share more about his recent Japan trip, making special note of the country's ubiquitous vending machines. Naturally, they lapse right back into talking about random movies and TV shows before they inexplicably wrap up the episode by dissecting the thriving hair transplant market in Turkey. Seriously, somebody please get Vanessa on a flight home before these two start discussing the strict rules of competitive goat herding! Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! 2. Japan, Comics, Wrestling, and Spirit Airlines

Japan, Comics, Wrestling, and Spirit Airlines

It's the Tofu Duo in the studio today because the third member of the trio, Vanessa, is away in Brazil taking care of business. Naturally, with the boss out of the office, the boys immediately lose all sense of direction. It should surprise absolutely nobody that Jon and Joey manage to completely avoid talking about veganism for the entire runtime. The chaos begins when Jon plugs the Beyond Immerse Protein Drink, something his wife did on the show just a few weeks ago. Once that unpaid product placement is out of the way, Joey launches into a breakdown of how he spent Free Comic Book Day and what he bought at his local comic shop. This inevitably triggers a massive nerd tangent where Joey delivers an unnecessarily long history lesson about Todd McFarlane and the founding of Image Comics. Joey spends nearly 15 minutes trapped in this comic book vortex, and without Vanessa around to get things back on track, he just goes on and on. Eventually, Jon breaks the geek trance to talk about his recent trip to Japan with his better half. He shares details about his excursion to Mount Fuji and explains the unique atmosphere of watching a Japanese baseball game, where he watched the oddly named Hiroshima Carp play. Somehow, this sports talk creates a bizarre logic bridge that gets Joey talking about professional wrestling and his all-time favorite wrestler, Mick Foley. By the end of the episode, the guys completely give up on structure and close out the show by rambling about Spirit Airlines. It's truly a wild ride. Please hurry back, Vanessa, because these two fools are completely lost without you! Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! 3. Jon and Vanessa Go to Japan

Jon and Vanessa Go to Japan

Even though Vanessa is in Brazil, The Tofu Trio still managed to get together to record a new episode. Vanessa brought along her niece Livia, but since she doesn't speak much English, Livia's contribution is pretty much limited to hello and goodbye. In fact, you actually hear more from Joey's dog Khaleesi than you do from Livia. Jon and Vanessa dive deep into their recent trip to Japan, where they were surprised to learn that the country isn't very vegan friendly. Jon also describes the high-tech toilets in Japan, which completely makes Joey’s day because he still possesses the sense of humor of a five year old. It's a wild international ride full of language barriers, dietary struggles, and way more bathroom talk than anyone could expect or want. If you're interested in buying the fancy $400 bidet attachment that Jon bought on Amazon, visit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FCTR1Y75?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&th=1. No, Amazon isn't paying them for this plug. They probably wish that Amazon did pay them, though! Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! 4. Non-Vegan Voices: AJ

    Non-Vegan Voices: AJ

With Jon and Vanessa out of commission, Joey delivers another Non-Vegan Voices episode, this time featuring his equally introverted and socially awkward friend AJ. They kick off the show with their friendship origin story and explain how a single "man date" sealed their fate as geek buds. AJ recalls his supporting role during Joey's journey into veganism before the guys pivot to discussing AI and ChatGPT. After laughing about how they might actually be related, Joey gives AJ the floor to defend himself against vegans who claim that non-vegans can't truly love animals. Naturally, they take a massive detour to talk about comic books, including their trip to the comic shop on Superman Day. Finally, they close out the show by drooling over an upcoming meal at a favorite restaurant. The episode is a "blistering masterpiece" full of food conversations, comic book talk, and unscripted background noises from Joey’s lovable English Bulldog, Khaleesi. It's a completely different kind of episode, yet it's also exactly like every other episode. Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! Vegan Community

The Tofu Trio revisits a topic they've touched on several times before which is the importance of vegan community. They explore why humans crave a sense of belonging whether it involves plant-based living, hockey rinks, or comic book shops. The group tackles the tired stereotype that all vegans are pale white hippies by highlighting the actual diversity of the movement across race, class, and political lines. This leads to a lively discussion about Republican vegans and Vanessa's take on why neither political party is actually doing favors for the animals. Jon then asks Joey if he'd ever vote for a vegan Republican, and Joey's answer is so incendiary that the editor had to reach for the bleep button. Oh boy. They wrap up the political talk by contemplating whether a vegan candidate could actually win a major election in this meat-obsessed country. After a quick plug for the Shopify store, the trio concludes the show by weighing the pros and cons of public protests and whether they truly help the cause. It's a spirited episode that proves The Tofu Trio can find plenty of common ground even when the conversation gets spicy. Buy some Vegans Talking Shit merchandise! Sgt. Vegan: Bravo

At ease, soldier! The Tofu Trio is back to continue their conversation with Sgt. Vegan, Bill Muir. As the debriefing continues, Sgt. Vegan gives the intel on his three published books and offers a preview of what his fourth book might look like. Jon asks the sergeant if he has an ancestral claim to Muir Woods before Joey leads the conversation into a mosh pit of heavy metal, punk, and hip hop. Vanessa eventually steers the group back to veganism, which leads the sergeant to reflect on his original dream of owning a vegan restaurant and the pivot that led him to become a registered nurse instead. The episode also covers his possible speaking tour in the northeastern United States, and his brother who shares the vegan mission. Bill wraps things up by sharing why he is so optimistic about the next generation of plant-based advocates. Grab your favorite plant-based snacks and settle in for the conclusion of this thought-provoking discussion. Learn more about Sgt. Vegan by visiting https://sgtvegan.com.
