How to collaborate with artists successfully — Jordan Brooke Hamlin | UNSUNG

For Episode 4 Season 2 of UNSUNG we continue with producer, engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and MOXE founder Jordan Brooke Hamlin, who joins hosts Mirek Stiles and @mattsoczywko to talk about creativity, studio culture, and what it really takes to make artists feel safe enough to do their best work. Based in Nashville, Jordan has produced and engineered albums and new musical works for artists including Indigo Girls, KT Tunstall, Brandy Clark, Allison Russell, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Tenille Townes, Sasha Sloan, Lila Blue, Rufus Wainwright, and Adia Victoria. As a touring and session musician, her collaborators include Brandi Carlile, Amy Ray, Ruby Amanfu, Loudon Wainwright III, Katie Herzig, Dar Williams, The Secret Sisters, and more. In this episode, Jordan breaks down the thinking behind MOXE — her 20-acre residential recording studio, production house, and retreat space — and explains why environment, trust, movement, food, lighting, and even the walk between rooms can shape what happens in a session. Jordan also talks about the role of the producer today, from protecting the artist’s experience to helping them navigate creative pressure, feedback, budgets, and the realities of the modern music business. She discusses why “vibe is everything,” how to build a space that pulls artists out of self-criticism, and why making records is often about people as much as sound. Throughout the conversation, Jordan returns to a simple but powerful idea: great records come from understanding the person in front of you, not forcing them into a fixed process. ➡️ Follow Jordan Brooke Hamlin – https://www.instagram.com/jamlin/?hl=en ➡️ Learn more about MOXE – https://www.moxe.space/ ➡️ Learn more about Audiomovers – https://audiomovers.com?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=content&utm_campaign=unsung_jordan_brooke_hamlin Timecode 0:00 — Intro 0:45 — Creating the right vibe in the studio 4:20 — Why MOXE was built differently 9:30 — Making artists feel at home 14:00 — Building a studio around how people actually move 18:15 — The role of gear, instruments, and happy accidents 24:00 — What makes the right producer-artist fit 29:30 — How record-making roles have changed 35:00 — Protecting the artist’s experience 41:00 — Working with major artists and staying grounded 47:00 — Why artists need to ask “why am I doing this?” 53:00 — Collaboration, compromise, and creative trust 1:00:00 — Handling pressure and mistakes in sessions 1:07:00 — Quickfire: lighting, vocals, reverb, and monitors 1:15:00 — Closing thoughts UNSUNG is a podcast from Audiomovers that explores the untold stories and creative processes behind the music we love. The secrets of horror film scoring — Jeff Grace | UNSUNG

For Episode 3 Season 2 of UNSUNG we continue with composer Jeff Grace, who joins hosts ‪@mirek.stiles and ‪@mixedbyjocelin to explore how music shapes emotion, tension, and storytelling in film. Best known for his work on The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, Stake Land, and Meek’s Cutoff, Jeff Grace has built a career scoring films that rely on atmosphere, restraint, and psychological impact. Before that, he worked as an assistant to Howard Shore on major productions including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Gangs of New York, gaining first-hand experience of large-scale film scoring at the highest level. In this episode, Jeff breaks down how composers approach building themes that can evolve across an entire film — from subtle hints to full emotional payoff. He explains why the best scores often go unnoticed, how tension is created through pacing and restraint, and why horror films offer a uniquely wide creative palette. Jeff also shares practical insight into the realities of working with directors, from spotting sessions and temp music to navigating feedback and creative collaboration. He discusses the challenge of finding a musical identity early in a career, and how limitations — whether budget, instrumentation, or time — can become powerful creative tools. Throughout the conversation, Jeff returns to a central idea: that film music isn’t about drawing attention to itself, but about shaping how an audience feels — often without them even realising it. ➡️ Learn more about Audiomovers – https://audiomovers.com?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=content&utm_campaign=unsung_jeff_grace Timecode0:00–0:43 — Intro0:43 — What a film composer actually does4:30 — Starting with themes and building a score9:15 — Why the best film music goes unnoticed14:20 — Creating tension and scoring horror20:10 — Working with directors and interpreting feedback26:40 — Spotting sessions and remote collaboration32:15 — Temp music and creative constraints38:50 — Developing a sound and musical identity45:30 — From assistant to composer: breaking into film52:10 — Lessons from working on major productions01:01:15 — Advice for aspiring composers UNSUNG is a podcast from Audiomovers that explores the untold stories and creative processes behind the music we love. Behind the sound of Howard Shore and Philip Glass with Nancy Allen | UNSUNG

For Episode 2 Season 2 of UNSUNG we continue with film music editor Nancy Allen, who joins hosts ‪ @mixedbyjocelin and ‪ Mirek Stiles to explore the craft of film scoring, storytelling, and collaboration at the highest level of cinema. With over 90 film credits, Nancy Allen is best known for her work on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Black Swan, and A Quiet Place Part II. A Golden Reel Award winner, she has worked closely with composers including Howard Shore and Philip Glass, and collaborated with directors such as Peter Jackson and Martin Scorsese across some of the most ambitious film productions of the last two decades. In this episode, Nancy shares a rare behind-the-scenes perspective on the making of The Lord of the Rings at Abbey Road Studios, including the moment the production shifted from tape to Pro Tools in real time. She reflects on the pressure of working with full orchestras before modern digital workflows, and how those constraints shaped both the creative process and the people involved. Nancy also breaks down the role of a music editor — sitting between director, composer, and picture editor — and explains how music shapes storytelling beyond the obvious. From Peter Jackson’s note to “score the anxiety, not the action,” to building emotional context before a single note is heard, she offers practical insight into how great film music actually works. Alongside this, Nancy shares her unconventional path into the industry — from waiting tables in New York to working on Scorsese’s Kundun — and the habits that matter most for anyone trying to break into film and audio today. She discusses the importance of organisation, communication, and understanding storytelling, as well as the evolving challenges of the industry in the age of streaming and AI. ➡️ Learn more about Audiomovers – https://audiomovers.com?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=content&utm_campaign=unsung_nancy_allen Timecode0:00–0:55 — Intro0:55–5:30 — Early career and discovering music editing5:30–11:20 — Working before Pro Tools and the “Oracle” system11:20–18:00 — Pressure of recording with full orchestras18:00–24:30 — The Lord of the Rings at Abbey Road24:30–30:00 — Transition from tape to digital workflows30:00–38:00 — Remote collaboration and early digital workflows38:00–46:00 — What a music editor actually does46:00–52:30 — Scoring emotion vs scoring action52:30–58:00 — A Quiet Place and character-driven scoring58:00–1:05:00 — Breaking into the industry1:05:00–1:10:00 — Advice for aspiring editors and creatives1:10:00–End — Closing thoughts UNSUNG is a podcast from Audiomovers that explores the untold stories and creative processes behind the music we love. "K-Pop Isn't A Genre It's Their Culture, It's Everything" Production Duo LDN Noise | UNSUNG

For Episode 20 of the UNSUNG podcast, Jocelin and Matt were joined by British songwriting & production duo LDN Noise at Abbey Road Studios. Comprising Greg Bonnick and Hayden Chapman, the two met via a mutual friend, originally producing garage and UK electronic genres popular at the time. After digital downloads started to displace revenue generated from physical sales of vinyl and CDs, Greg's dance music label began to struggle financially. He pivoted out of making niche UK genres like Garage and 2-step and started studying songwriting and looking into producing more commercial music with Hayden. They had a string of early successes working on music for UK chart-toppers like Cheryl Cole, Sugababes, and Tinie Tempah, while also working on more underground acts/genres like Skepta and Grime. Then, around 2012, the UK music scene started to run thin on the ground; there weren't many acts to pitch songs for. The boys had landed a big track with Chris Brown that same year but struggled to get much music placed until their songwriter friend Andrew Jackson introduced them to a brand-new genre emerging from South Korea called K-pop. Returning from LA frustrated after a big writing trip, they decided to double down on this brand-new genre and quickly found success in K-pop, finding their broad musical taste and diverse musical ability a perfect fit for the multi-genre twists and turns found in K-pop's DNA. Today, LDN Noise has written songs and produced music for some of the biggest acts in K-pop and the world, including: Chris Brown, Nick Jonas, Red Velvet, Exo, NCT Dream, NCT 127, Skepta, Enhypen, Twice, and many, many more. In this episode, the boys discuss how they typically work together, how they met, their early productions, their transition into songwriting, and the commercial evolution of UK Rap in the 2010s, Grime's second wave, the highs and lows of various musical genres, the impact of diverse musical experiences, their success in K-pop, covering its defining features, the potential dark sides of the scene, and the importance of work ethic and talent in the music industry, how they initially got into K-pop, what inspires them when writing in the genre, how they developed the skillset to produce its many diverse styles, their preferred DAW, the different sound characteristics of DAWs, the plugins they regularly use.
