JahMarcus Washington - Parsons, KS | A young man’s death labeled a suicide, despite being found shot in a trash bag

Episode 80: JahMarcus Washington - Parsons, KS | A young man’s death labeled a suicide, despite being found shot in a trash bag JahMarcus Washington was 17 years old when he was shot and killed inside a friend’s home, but what happened next would leave his family questioning nearly everything about the investigation. His death was initially ruled a homicide before being changed to suicide, and two years later, his family is still fighting to understand what happened to JahMarcus. Episode Summary In this episode, we’re heading to Parsons, Kansas, to talk about the life and death of 17-year-old JahMarcus “Deuce” Washington. JahMarcus was a beloved son, brother, friend, and talented football player with dreams of one day making it to the NFL. On June 25, 2024, JahMarcus was fatally shot while at a friend’s home with several other people present. His family says the circumstances surrounding his death and the investigation that followed raised numerous questions, from conflicting accounts of what happened to concerns about how evidence was handled and preserved. Perhaps most troubling to his family is the fact that JahMarcus’s death was initially ruled a homicide before the manner of death was later changed to suicide. In this episode, I’m honored to speak with JahMarcus’s sister, who shares memories of the brother she loved, what her family has learned over the past two years, the questions they still have, and why they continue fighting for an independent investigation. Because JahMarcus was so much more than the way he died. He was Deuce, and his family refuses to let his story be forgotten. The Resendez Family - Moultrie, GA | The Highway 37 Murders: Five Lives and a Vanished Verdict

Episode 77: The Resendez Family - Moultrie, GA | The Highway 37 Murders: Five Lives and a Vanished Verdict Five people were murdered inside a Georgia home. A man received five consecutive life sentences; then, thirteen years later, he walked free. What happened to the case against Alexander Woods III, and where does that leave the family still fighting for answers? Episode Summary On November 8, 2004, five people were murdered inside a home along Georgia Highway 37, just outside Moultrie, Georgia: Jaime Resendez; his wife, Tina Resendez; their three-year-old son, Juan Carlos Resendez; Tina’s mother, Betty Faye Watts; and the family’s housekeeper and nanny, Liliana Alegria Aguilar. When several of the Resendez children returned home from school that afternoon, they discovered a scene that would follow them for the rest of their lives. Investigators initially considered whether the killings were retaliation connected to an earlier drug investigation. As the case developed, however, prosecutors presented a different theory involving a drug debt, an attempted intimidation, and a search for money that ended in five deaths. Jerry Johnny Thompson eventually pleaded guilty to murder and became the prosecution’s central witness against Alexander Woods III. In 2013, Woods was convicted of five counts of malice murder and sentenced to five consecutive life terms. But Thompson was the only witness who directly placed Woods inside the home and years later, questions about the information Woods’s attorneys failed to use when challenging Thompson’s credibility placed the entire conviction in jeopardy. In 2021, the Supreme Court of Georgia vacated the order denying Woods a new trial and sent the case back for further review. A trial judge granted Woods a new trial in 2022. In August 2026, Woods was released after prosecutors determined they could not retry him without Thompson’s cooperation and without fingerprint or DNA evidence connecting Woods to the crime scene. Woods was not acquitted or legally exonerated, but his 2013 convictions no longer stand. Thompson remains imprisoned following his guilty plea. More than two decades after five people were killed, the legal system has been left without a current verdict deciding Woods’s guilt, and the victims’ surviving family members have once again been denied the finality they believed they had received. Anyone with firsthand information may contact the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office at 229-616-7430, its Investigations Division at 229-616-7460, or submit information through the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s confidential online tip form. Shariece and Joanna Clark - Baltimore, MD | Mother and Daughter Go Missing Just Hours Apart

Episode 76: MISSING: Shariece and Joanna Clark - Baltimore, MD | Mother and Daughter Go Missing Just Hours Apart A mother and daughter go missing from the same town, just hours apart. A history of domestic violence, conflicting stories, and a community reluctant to talk would leave their family searching for answers that, nearly a decade later, still haven’t come. Episode Summary In February 2017, 33-year-old Joanna Clark and her 15-year-old daughter, Shariece, disappeared from their home in Baltimore, Maryland. Joanna was a mother of seven, working to support her family. Shariece middle schooler who was close with her family and affectionately called “Reecey”. The last known sightings of the women were on the same Saturday. Shariece was home babysitting her younger siblings before leaving that afternoon. Joanna went to work and later went on a date. By Tuesday, Joanna had missed two shifts at work. When Jessica went to check on her, she discovered that neither Joanna nor Shariece had been seen for days—and neither had been reported missing. What followed was a frustrating search led largely by family and friends, who felt law enforcement wasn’t taking the disappearances seriously enough in those crucial early days. Despite something deeply troubling- Joanna had previously obtained a protective order against her ex-boyfriend Dennis, the father of six of her children. Family members described a history of harassment, threats, property destruction, and attempts to isolate Joanna from her family. Just days before the women disappeared, Shariece reportedly told Joanna that Dennis had made sexual advances toward her. Joanna told Dennis he had to leave the home. She was scheduled to return to court to extend her protective order the day after she disappeared. Dennis denied involvement and denied the domestic violence allegations. He was never publicly named by Baltimore police as a suspect or person of interest. His polygraph was inconclusive. In January 2026, Dennis died from pancreatic cancer. If he knew what happened to Joanna and Shariece, those answers may have died with him. Nearly nine years later, neither woman has been found. Shariece would now be 24. Joanna would be 42. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Baltimore Police Department at 410-396-2525 or 410-396-2100. If you believe every case deserves to be heard, share this episode. The more people who know Sharice and Joanna’s names, the better the chance that someone, somewhere, recognizes something that could help bring answers to their family. **Bonus Minisode** Rita Cornutt - Rainbow City, AL

**Bonus Minisode** Rita Cornutt - Rainbow City, AL | Murder at the Rainbow Mini-Mart In August 1984, Rita Cornutt was stabbed to death while working at the Rainbow Mini-Mart in Rainbow City, Alabama. Her murder remains unsolved, and a surprising name found in her case file led us directly to the Guest Service Station murders. In this bonus minisode, we return to the case that started it all and ask: who killed Rita Cornutt? Episode Summary On August 6, 1984, Rita was working at the Rainbow Mini-Mart on Rainbow Drive in Rainbow City, Alabama. Sometime during her shift, she was attacked and fatally stabbed. Approximately $250 was reported missing from the store. Although police secured the Mini-Mart as a crime scene that night, many of the most basic details have never been made public. Available reports do not identify who found Rita, who called police, where she was located inside the store, or whether she was still alive when help arrived. No detailed autopsy findings have been released beyond the fact that Rita died from stab wounds. In 2014, then-Rainbow City Police Chief Greg Carroll officially reopened the case. Before becoming a police officer, Carroll had been one of Rita’s regular customers. He remembered her as a kind and generous woman who would sometimes help customers when they were short on money. Investigators hoped to question an unnamed person of interest who reportedly had never been interviewed and to examine evidence preserved in a sealed folder using newer technology. No arrest or public resolution followed. Anyone with direct information about Rita Cornutt’s murder is encouraged to contact the Rainbow City Police Department at 256-442-2511. Please submit information to investigators rather than posting accusations or unverified names online. Click here to check out our new merch! Rebecca Ledbetter, David Robinson & Larry Thomas Jr. - Gadsden, AL | The killer on the run

Episode 74: Rebecca Ledbetter, David Robinson & Larry Thomas Jr. - Gadsden, AL | The killer on the run In August 1986, a quiet night inside a Gadsden, Alabama, mobile home turned into a triple murder that would leave three people dead and send their killer on the run. Episode Summary On the night of August 24, 1986, Rebecca Ledbetter was at home with her boyfriend, David Robinson, her son, Shea Ledbetter, her sister, Katrina Ledbetter, and Shea's friend, Larry Thomas Jr. Larry stepped outside that night to go home. He never made it. Larry was shot outside the mobile home. Moments later, Rebecca's ex-husband, Glenn Holladay, entered the residence. Katrina managed to warn Rebecca before escaping with Shea, but Rebecca and David remained inside. By the time it was over, Larry Thomas Jr., David Robinson, and Rebecca Holladay were dead. And Glenn Holladay was gone. But this story didn't begin that night. At the time of the murders, Holladay was already a convicted felon and escapee with a lengthy criminal history. Months earlier, he had escaped from the Cherokee County Jail. Evidence presented in court would later reveal threats against Rebecca, including testimony that Holladay had said he would kill her if she continued seeing another man. Following the murders, investigators began a search that stretched beyond Alabama. Holladay remained a fugitive until October 9, 1986, when authorities located him in Gainesville, Florida. His capture ended with Holladay being shot by law enforcement. He denied committing the murders and claimed he had been in Nashville when they occurred. A jury didn't believe him. Episode 73: La’son & Edson Brito, Johntavious & Ameer Newell, & Noe Medina, Jr - Brockton, MA, Chicago, IL, & La Habra, CA | Before there was Lindsey Clancey... Lindsay Clancy's case has received so much attention, but why we weren’t having this conversation before her? In this episode, we look at three mothers who also encountered severe mental illness, crisis, and missed opportunities for intervention, with the most devastating consequences. Episode Summary In this episode of True Crime Unwind, Mercedes takes us across Massachusetts, Chicago, and California to examine three cases that received far less national attention than the case of Lindsay Clancy. Lindsay Clancy’s case has sparked widespread conversations about postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, maternal mental health, criminal responsibility, and the healthcare system. But as her trial has dominated headlines and social media, we wanted to ask a different question: Why did this case become such a massive national conversation when other mothers experiencing severe mental-health crises received comparatively little attention? To explore that question, we look at the stories of Latarsha Sanders, Aleah Newell, and Sonia Hermosillo. Latarsha Sanders Latarsha Sanders was a mother of five whose mental health deteriorated dramatically before the deaths of her two youngest children, Edson and La'Son. Her family described increasingly disturbing behavior, paranoia, conspiracy theories, and episodes in which she appeared disconnected from reality. Aleah Newell Aleah Newell was only 20 years old and was the mother of two young boys. In the days leading up to the deaths of her children, Aleah had already attempted suicide, had been diagnosed with a mood disorder, and reportedly sought help at an emergency shelter because she did not feel capable of caring for her children. Unfortunately, this ended in her taking the lives of her two sons- two-year-old Jontavious Newell and seven-month-old Ameer Newell. Sonia Hermosillo Sonia Hermosillo's story offers perhaps the most direct comparison to the postpartum mental-health discussion surrounding Lindsay Clancy. After giving birth to her son, Noe, Sonia experienced a dramatic deterioration in her mental health. Her family sought treatment for her, she was hospitalized on an involuntary psychiatric hold, and she was considered a danger to herself. But her family struggled to maintain consistent treatment because of financial and insurance barriers. Sonia ultimately killed her infant son, and her defense argued that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis. Click here to check out our new merch!
